25.01.2022 Green and black tomatoes.
24.01.2022 Pretty happy with the first of the carrots out of the wicking beds. So much better than any I’ve grown in our heavy soil- carrots love deep loose soil to grow straight so raised and wicking beds are just perfect!
23.01.2022 Time for a restock of the fridge. No hungry spring times going on here!
23.01.2022 Edit- date change to OCT 10. Just a heads up - I will be listing my tomato seedlings for sale on the 2nd of October. I have 51 different varieties, many you won't find locally in seedling form anywhere else. Only small numbers of most. All orders will have to be through my website and i'll announce on here when it is live. Given that covid restrictions have now been lifted quite a lot here i'll start with pickup only (in Mt Egerton). However depending how fast these sell i ma...y consider doing a specific delivery day or two to Ballarat/Ballan/Gordon for a small fee etc so please let me know if you would want this and couldn't manage to come here. Seedlings will be $3 each. No pre-orders sorry as i won't be able to keep track. For planning purposes this is the list as it currently stands: Roma Tropic Indigo Rose College Challenger Rouge de Marmande Anais Noir Nipple Blue Gold Berries Yellow Pear Costoluto Fiorentino Thai Pink Egg Yellow Stuffer Blue Berry Yellow Honeybee Pink Bumblebee Black Beauty Red Grosse Lisse Amethyst Jewel Ned Kelly Giant Tree Tomato Black Shaddow Isis Candy Fahrenheit Blues Hillbilly Lucky Tiger Dark Tiger Yellow Colossal Black from Tula Reistomate Blue Ridge Mountain Aunt Ruby's Green Golden King of Serbia Australian Red Azoychka Chocolate Pear Sart Rolise Indigo Blue Beauty Black Icicle Pink Oxheart Granny's Throwing Tommy Toe Mortgage Lifter White Cherry Canabe Super Orange Cherry Jaune Flamme Lemon Drop Money Maker Japanese Black Trifele Amethyst Cream Siberian
22.01.2022 Canned pickled veg/kraut finished plus one quick pickle for the fridge. In the end I used cabbage, leek, onion, carrots, turnips, beetroot and beet greens in the canned kraut and snow peas, broccoli shoots plus some spices and garlic for the quick pickle which was really just to use up the last of the vinegar mixture. And checkout how amazing the carrots are inside! I’m afraid I can’t quite remember the variety they are - I’d have to look through my planting notes.
22.01.2022 Some of the plants flowering for seed atm. Red onions, chives, watermelon radish, wasabi mustard, coriander, Paris market carrots, celery, coriander.
21.01.2022 The purple artichokes are looking lovely this time of year.
18.01.2022 Black Krim tomato. I’m a big fan of dark tomatoes like these. In a cooler Australian climate the dark skin absorbs more heat which assists with ripening and gives them a delicious rich smokey flavour. Seeds grown at our permaculture homestead $3.50 a packet for gardeners. https://www.loganberryforest.com.au/product/black-kim/
17.01.2022 I’ve had to push my local tomato seeding sale out by a week sorry due to illness (just a cold). Don’t worry they will be growing quite happily in the greenhouse for you in the meantime.
16.01.2022 A double ripe amethyst jewel and indigo rose.
14.01.2022 Lots of yellow zucchini coming in. I have 3 types. Crockneck, yellow and ball.
11.01.2022 It’s warm in here! Almost ready for planting out with tomatoes, beans, basil and some companion flowers.
11.01.2022 My feed has been chock full of broad bean posts lately. And lots of Facebook discussions on preservation methods. So I just wanted to share something. Broad bean preservation can actually be the most low effort and energy thing ever -if you wish. Just leave them to dry on the plant. This is what I do to save seed but that same seed is also food. Dried broad beans, dried on the plants are a staple food in many parts of the Middle East. The Egyptian dish Ful Mudammas is one exa...mple and absolutely delicious! Falafels is another dish that can be made with them. The taste of dried broad beans is much more like another dried beans like kidney beans than the fresh green flavour of when they are young. So if you want to preserve them green and fresh, quick blanch and freeze I find to be the easiest. They do take up a lot of garden space though so I’m guessing that’s why people aren’t just leaving their plants be? We are lucky to have the space and since broad beans are such a wonderful source of nitrogen for the soil I try and rotate the few beds they are planted in each year. Another top tip I learn from my friend Liz from @switchonsustainability is that you can actually eat the pods too if you roast them in olive oil (lemon also nice). It was totally delicious and actually I preferred them that way of any fresh bean dish. See more
10.01.2022 And this is why I have a greenhouse and polytunnel and won’t be planting my summer crops outside till November. First photo is the pile of broccoli I posted yesterday.
10.01.2022 A sunny morning after a huge storm and downpour that refilled all our tanks to overflowing. The plants look amazing including many I managed to just plant out before the rain came.
10.01.2022 Apologies for those few that were using it but i've decided to suspend accepting direct bank transfers as payment for now on the website as it has created a lot of hassles for everyone and instead have added Square which is a secure way of paying by credit/debit card within the site as well as keeping Paypal.
09.01.2022 The first of the apples are blooming
09.01.2022 It’s tomato planting day! In the poly tunnel anyway. I won’t be planting any outside until after Melbourne cup day due to the risk of frost. So many new varieties I’m so excited to try them all!
08.01.2022 From flower to seed of brassicas. This is 2 different plants but it shows the progression of brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, cabbages, turnips etc) in general for seed saving. Firstly I make sure that no other brassicas are flowering at the same time that could cross pollinate consulting a ‘triangle of U’ chart as there is some crossing between some species as well as within. So I also stay on top of eating any others in my garden well before they flower. Then I let the bees at it! They love brassica flowers but so do aphids unfortunately so I spray them off with water wherever I see them. Once pollinated the flowers become seed pods which I leave to dry on the plant then crack open to harvest the little round black seeds to plant.
07.01.2022 Raspberries galore.
07.01.2022 If you followed my last worm farm video here is an update on it including a mod and how to harvest castings.
06.01.2022 Today I’m going to plant some zucchini’s in pots for an early greenhouse crop. Later I’ll plant direct in the garden outside. Black beauty is one of my favourites. Homegrown heirloom seeds available. $3.5 per packet for gardeners. https://www.loganberryforest.com.au/product/zucchini-black/
06.01.2022 A little harvest from the front garden. Zucchini are getting a bit out of hand. I need to get better at catching the female flowers at the right point to isolate them for seed as we have way more than we need for food at this point. Lots of cucumbers this year too and the first ripe capsicum which is surprising for an outside garden as we have many more in the polytunnel. Time to start making passata.
05.01.2022 Totally inspired the latest video I just watched on the YouTube channel Simple Living Alaska to make canned/pickled kraut using a variety of mixed vegetables. So the kids and I went out and picked a whole bunch of stuff to use including: red cabbage, beetroot, purple and orange carrots, snow peas, onion and broccoli shoots. I’ll probably also use some finely chopped turnips I picked the other day too. How amazing that we can be harvesting similar things here in Australia now that they are Alaska (except for the chillies they use in another recipe). I find Alaska such a fascinating place!
05.01.2022 Common poppies grow wild in my greenhouse gravel flooring and I love them!
05.01.2022 Now is a great time to start thinking about pumpkins and zucchini seed planting (in punnets only yet if your in an area with frost). One of our favourites is these small sugar pumpkins. Super sweet they are delicious roasted and are the traditional pumpkin used for sweet pie making. Seeds available for gardeners. https://www.loganberryforest.com.au/pr/pumpkin-small-sugar/
04.01.2022 You know when sometimes onions don’t really grow properly one year and then pop up again the next often with new babies in a bunch. Well that happened to these and then they almost flowered since onions are biennial but I couldn’t have that since my red onions I actually want to save are almost about to flower too! So out they come. They wouldn’t have got much bigger anyway and will be perfectly fine to eat like a spring onion.
03.01.2022 It’s that time of year when I do an aphid water spraying video. It’s better to hold the plant while spraying but I couldn’t while filming. But a nice flat jet of water from a hose is a very effective method of control. Yes you have to do it multiple times probably on different plants etc but by not using any chemicals im giving natural biological controls like ladybugs a chance to balance things out. And I sure don’t want to hurt my bees either (any even some organic sprays will).
02.01.2022 My Parisian carrots are getting ready to flower!
01.01.2022 Today’s seed highlight is borage which is a fantastic veggie garden companion plant you can start now. This plant has beautiful edible blue flowers that bees love and a deep taproot that is great for breaking up heavy soils. It also readily self seeds year after year so you really only need to plant it once. Seeds to plant now available for gardeners. https://www.loganberryforest.com.au/product/borage/
