25.01.2022 Smart babies make their way into our beds.

25.01.2022 Why do nursing parents need more sleep, eat and drink more? Because we are our infants environment, it is through us that they are nourished and nurtured 24hrs a day. How can you help? - keeping one handed easy to eat snacks on hand. - A couple of water bottle filled places around the house. - Calling during the day to check in... - Ask. What would help? See more

23.01.2022 It’s true. The only people who get to make the decision to stop #breastfeeding are the people doing it. #family #lactationeducation #breastfeedingsupport #chestfeeding #mindyourbusiness #logicallactation #attachmentparenting #newborn #toddlers #child #children #parenting #love #liquidgold

23.01.2022 Breastfeeding has become a part of our daily tradition. * * * * I’ve learned that there is a big difference between routine and tradition. A routine is a set of actions to be performed regularly with the end result being peace of mind. A tradition is a set of actions to be performed regularly with the end result being peace of heart.... * * * * Our 4 year old sleeps in our family bed and when she wakes she reaches out for me Can I have some milkas? and I reply Yes baby come closer This is my gentle way to wake to the world, think about my day and gain some quiet before I rush off. Nursing our babies often requires us to stop, sit and be with our them. When we flow into these moments they can become treasures of connection that we look forward to, playing with toes, breathing each other in, twirling their hair and cuddling communicates love to our bodies and their growing brains. And science plays a role in this as well, when we chestfeed/ breastfeed we get a rush of oxytocin that facilitates bonding, connection and calm. The more we repeat these actions and have them in a enjoyable setting our bodies become habitual in their experience, this also allows for our children to benefit from these beautiful pauses throughout their busy day. We can create a tradition of breastfeeding that supports our lives: - nursing for gentle wake ups. - chestfeeding to help with transitions. - feeding before family meals to create mindfulness around our food. - breastfeeding to help ease into naps and sleeps. * * * * Arranging your day around nursing can help create a more enjoyable and healthier schedule as we tend to rush to accomplish and not attend to enjoy. This (I believe) is the gift of breastfeeding. Happy New Years beautiful community. We have a TON planned for this year with new Event, classes and training for professionals. Ps. You rocked parenting in 2020! 21.01.2022 We’re on a break to study for my exams and enjoy our incredible weather with family. We’ll be back with amazing community events and projects. Jenna

20.01.2022 Ever feel like you don’t want to breastfeed? Cause we have all been there! Wether it’s because their face is covered in spaghetti sauce , because you’ve been feeding all night, you just want to eat something yourself or you’re just not feeling it. These feelings are our body’s way of communicating that we need to do some #selfcare. When we start having negative emotions about caring for our little loves it’s called being touched out and signals that we need to ask for and... get more support from our family, friends and community. It’s important to remember that breastfeeding is a relationship between two people and BOTH those people are deserving of compassion. Breastfeeding in a way that is loving and compassionate to not only our babies but also to ourselves is the key to long term success Jenna Richards #breastfeeding #education #lactationeducation #lactationeducationmatters #compassion #selfcare #newborn #babies #love #families #breastfeedingfamilies #chestfeeding #postpartumjourney #supportlocal

19.01.2022 Because language is important and we start making milk (colostrum) around the 14-20th week of pregnancy. So when we birth our babies, our milk is already there, the amount of colostrum is perfect for encouraging baby to feed frequently and activate the alveoli to make more as baby needs. Ps Our bodies are amazing and you are an incredible parent! #lactationeducation #lactation #breastfeeding #chestfeeding #nursing #pregnant #childbirtheducation #love #postpartum #parenting #midwifery #doula #doulasupport #newborn #newparents #support

18.01.2022 PROLACTIN * * * * The #hormone prolactin is secreted from the pituitary gland in response to nursing which signals to the alveoli to make and secrete milk. We receive a sharp increase of prolactin with the birth of the #placenta which provides the increase in volume we see day of life 2-3 (or more depending on interventions at birth) we then continue to get a surge or pulse of the hormone every time we breastfeed/chestfeed. This continues unt...il we wean and is responsible for our demand and supply, the more you feed: the more milk you make. #themoreyouknow #lactaionstudent #thankyouforbreastfeeding #student #breastfeeding #newborn #families #nursing #chestfeeding #breastfeeding #lactationeducation #logicallactation #newparent #lactationsupport #doula #midwife

17.01.2022 If Wishes were Horses: My Dream for Lactation Care. I have been playing with some version of this thought for years, If I could do anything after I pass my exam what would it be the answer is always the same Open a clinic with like minded lactation professionals.... Always the same idea but I play with the way this looks. I envision group collaboration, community building, clinic/ home/ Skype consults with appropriate follow up care that goes for MONTHS linking personal guidance to community peer meetings and support. I see a small group of lactation professionals that share: Clinical work that includes antenatal/ postpartum classes, childbirth education, professional continuing Ed classes, mentorships. Home visits for families experiencing lactation concerns, checking for new families wanting extra support and education about returning to work and finally Community outreach: professional run peer to peer groups, topics including what to expect the first hours/ days/ weeks / months/ years, where to get support, the birth- breastfeeding connection, baby wearing, cosleeping, elimination communication, and on and on.. I see four of us working together one week in the clinic, one week doing home visits, one week doing community projects and education and one week doing emergency on call support. I see us working with local doctors offices, colleges and universities, going to high schools and teaching breastfeeding 101 and running large community events including pride parades and maternity and healthcare protests. I see us being pillars of our community who work to raise up new families to parent in confidence, feeling educated and secure in their decision so that they can go on to support others. I see us changing how others look at lactation and community care. The only place I’ve seen doing anything close to this is from the amazing Angela Tatum Malloy IBCLC who is director of the Fayetteville Breastfeeding Centre, they work closely with doulas, community Midwives as well as other local healthcare providers.

17.01.2022 I just cannot love this more. will champion diversity in both medicine and society, and promote an inclusive environment by respecting the perspectives of others and relentlessly seeking to identify and eliminate my personal biases. I will be an ally to those of low socioeconomic status, the BIPOC community, the LGBTQIA+ community, womxn/women, differently-abled individuals and other underserved groups in order to dismantle the systemic racism and prejudice that medical prof...essionals and society have perpetuated. I will educate myself on social determinants of health in order to use my voice as a physician to advocate for a more equitable health care system from the local to the global level. I will restore trust between the health care community and the population in which I serve by holding myself and others accountable, and by combating misinformation in order to improve health literacy. https://www.pittwire.pitt.edu//modern-day-hippocrates-inco

15.01.2022 Breastfeeding outside or in public spaces is not only important for your health and well-being it can also be vital for your nursing journey. * * * * Chestfeeding definitely has a learning curve and one of the big steps is being comfortable with feeding our babies #outside. Not everyone is comfortable with this right away so here are a couple of tips to help you with this new adventure.... - Start in familiar places. Go to your regular coffee shop, some place that you are already comfortable in. - Find your local Parenting group or #LLL meeting. Not only will they support you they will love your support of others. - #babywearing helps keep stress off the arms and helps cover when you feel you need to. - Listen to your instincts, if you feel it’s not safe to feed your baby you are probably right. - Breastfeeding is legal in most public spaces depending on where you are so if you need help contact your local #ibclc - Ask a friend to come with you your first few time for support. For those of you supporting new families and see a parent sitting by themselves breastfeeding their little loves, go over and ask if they need a drink or bottle water. I have been known to say Hi I accidentally bought an extra bottle of water and thought you could use it, here let me open it for you ***Remember every time you breastfeeding in public you are supporting other nursing parents*** Take care with the heat and remember you are exactly the parent your baby needs. Love Jenna #attachmenttheory #nursing #chestfeeding #breastfeeding #doula #midwife #humanmilk #lactationeducation #lactationsupport #logicallactation

14.01.2022 It was relief and gratitude and bliss and an emotion I can’t quite describe but can feel in my bones as I try to bring it back and find the words I want this for all parents. I want all parents to experience their version of this, when their baby latches to the breast for the first time.... Unfortunately in our current system birth parents often look to the healthcare providers in the room to teach them how to: hold their baby, understand baby’s needs and how to recognise and respond to cues, how to latch and position baby at the breast but what if they aren’t the expert? What if YOU are the expert in your baby? What if we gave birthing parents the time they needed to meet their babies fresh from the wombs in a space that prioritised CONNECTION? What if we created a birthing space for dyads that included time without healthcare provider directly after the birth for at least 2 hours? What if weights and checks where done 24hrs after they arrived earthside? What if we taught parents in prenatal classes to: * Follow their instincts * Follow baby’s leads * Follow our own timeline * Follow our own goals Our 10 months of building a connection with our babies makes us the expert. If everyone who isn’t the birthing family left the room in our Homebirth, hospital birth & freebirthing spaces. Parents might have the experience that you can see in the picture above. This should be our goal for every family. Thank you to the beautiful Jessica Austin from Birth Takes a Village for sharing this incredible picture (which is now my favourite first latch picture) Thank you @common heart photography for capturing this awesome moment. #firstlatch #newborn #newmother #love #breastfeeding #chestfeeding #lactationeducation #oxytocin #doula #midwife #birth #homebirth #freebirth #35weeks #warrior #pregnantwithcancer #breastfeedingwithcancer #followbaby #lactation #liquidgold #humanmilk #connection #itsallaboutconnection #communication

13.01.2022 The top tips and tricks for growing/ maintaining your milk supply: - Feeding on demand and before baby cries. (See our awesome feeding cues meme below ) - Cobedding and Cosleeping keeps baby close to help us wake when baby stirs. - Feeding through the night has a positive impact on your supply and helps keep baby safe from SIDS.... - Feeding baby to sleep for naps and over night supports longer sleep cycles. - 10+ times a day. Making sure we offer to feed 10+ times in 24hrs and offering both breasts per feed. - Support, support, support! Have a plan in place for breastfeeding just like you plan for your birth. Now print this off and stick it to you fridge. Ps. You are an incredible parent! #parenting #lactation #lactaionsupport #breastfeeding #chestfeeding #support #nursing #newborn #newparents #parenting #parentingtips #doulalife #doula #midwife #postpartum #love

05.01.2022 I know we’re not suppose to b u t... I have a favourite... It’s true. I #love working with parents who are nursing their #toddlers.... They are so much fun! They’re strong personalities and drive to play and learn can make them very particular about #breastfeeding gymnastics. Foot in your face, fingers up your nose, holding on to a strawberry that you find in your bra later that day awesomeness. The main reason I love these particular dyads is because they are very open to communication and are usually pretty happy to work with us to help make chestfeeding/ nursing a happy time for everyone. I love working with all families but I know I’m in for a good time when my appointment is with these fabulous families Ps. Have I told you how awesome a parent you are today? 02.01.2022 Love this reminder that there is no one way to birth. Our bodies will often move and respond to what we need at the time.
