19.01.2022 I know a lot of teachers and students had found my little blue book to be very helpful since it was first released in 2012. But not everyone was sure how to use the guide straight away. That's why "How to Write What You Want to Say in the Secondary Years" has been updated - and is now accompanied by a Student Workbook and Teacher's Guide. Now featuring 25 different writing skills, the books are cross-referenced and written to be used together. You can find out more about how they work here: https://buff.ly/2Pmr6oF

12.01.2022 Students learn best when the teaching they receive is tailored to their existing knowledge and skills. However, in any class, there is an enormous difference between what students know and can do. Read our latest blog on the importance of background knowledge for reading comprehension. https://bit.ly/3cKm2Sw

09.01.2022 Writing places students under a huge cognitive load. They have to focus on what they are trying to say and how they are going to say it. Their brains are also trying to factor in vocabulary, punctuation, spelling, grammar... For students to become better writers they need to be able to practice writing regularly. You can make this a more pleasant task for your students by reducing the cognitive load they are placed under. One way to do this is to focus on the purpose of the... exercise and providing some support. So if you want students to focus on the what; that is, what they are writing about - then give them the how. If you want them to focus on the how; that is, putting the writing together, then you give them the what. You can find more ways to reduce the cognitive load, and things to watch out for at https://buff.ly/2mb3Xaf See more

04.01.2022 The keyword in the gradual release of responsibility is gradual . Over time we must reduce and remove little bits of the scaffolding so that students can reach the independent phase of writing. I guess the key thing to remember is that scaffolding stays in place until the building is built. Some of our students may never get past the "We do it" step. That's what we call joint construction - where the teacher has done some of the work and the student has done some of the wo...rk. If individual work is weak, you need to look at doing more joint construction activities. One thing I have observed though is that we over-scaffold in the junior years and then start to panic a bit when students get to senior. Often this is because over-scaffolding can lead to work that is very similar, which is not a good thing in the senior years. So we pull the rug out rather too quickly. Tell me, what's your experience with the gradual release of responsibility model?
