21.01.2022 To better explain Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the gold standard of therapy recommended for individuals with autism, I will share an analogy using Church an...d God. There are many kinds of different churches, all claiming to support the same God. Some churches are similar to one another, with only slight variations. Some are completely different. Some churches say things on behalf of God that you don't agree with at all. A church can be bad, or simply just not right for you, but that doesn't make God bad. It might just mean you need to go to a different church. ABA is like God, and ABA providers are like churches. You can have bad providers. Ones that are not in line with your beliefs. Ones that don't execute material with fidelity. Ones that don't properly train their tutors. That does not make ABA bad. ABA is a proven science, and it works. However, this can mean your provider was bad, or their methods and philosophy were a bad fit for you. Not all ABA providers are the same. ABA therapy is used to increase language and communication skills. It is also used to improve attention, focus, social skills, safety skills, memory, and academics. ABA is based on the science of learning and behavior. This science includes general laws about how behavior works and how learning takes place. ABA therapy applies these laws in a way that helps to increase useful or desired behaviors. (Learning is a behavior- almost everything we do is a behavior!). We don't use ABA to change my boys into robots, like some people claim happens with all ABA. It does not alter who they are. We do not torture them or cause them irreparable harm. It helps them learn colors, and numbers and how to write their name and teaches life skills other children learn easily- like NOT to run into traffic, how to brush your teeth and get dressed, and a thousand other things. ABA has changed our life. I can't imagine what my boys lives would be like without it. While it might not be successful in 100% of children, it is a remarkable intervention, and it works for most. We are so grateful for it. #aba #autism

05.01.2022 Interesting blog post However, a person with autism who may have the same level of discomfort and escapes the situation in the only way he or she knows how, ...is often said to have sensory issues when perhaps it would be more helpful to say he or she has skill deficits. https://blog.difflearn.com//i-hear-that-bcbas-dont-belie/
