25.01.2022 On this day 1971: Battle of Nui Le, South Vietnam. Soldiers of B Company and D Company, 4RAR/NZ, fought an intense battle against a large enemy force from 33 North Vietnamese Army Regiment in the north of Phuoc Tuy province. The enemy defended their well constructed bunker systems and then attacked D Company for several hours. Five Australians were killed in action, and 24 were wounded in this battle, which was part of Operation Ivanhoe. This was the last battle fought by Australians in South Vietnam, before the final withdrawal of the task force in early December 1971. www.awn.gov.au



25.01.2022 On this day 1943: Operation Avalanche, began with the landing of two British divisions and one American division at Salerno; the British troops pushed 8 to 11 kilometers inland, with the Americans holding on to a precarious beachhead. To the north, German troops disarmed their former Italian allies and classified them as prisoners of war.

22.01.2022 On this day 1917: The Bolshevik revolt overthrew Czar Nicholas and seized Petrograd, Russia. The Provisional Government fell and Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky fled the country. The "Ten days that shook the world" had begun and communist forces began to gain control over Russia.

22.01.2022 On this day 1914: HMA Submarine AE1 lost off New Guinea. The AE1 and AE2 were the first submarines to serve with the Royal Australian Navy. The AE1 disappeared without trace during operations for the capture of German New Guinea. www.awm.gov.au This boat has since been found.

21.01.2022 On this day 1941: HMAS Sydney [II] sunk. Sydney was lost with its entire crew of 645 men in a sudden and disastrous encounter with the German raider, Kormoran, off the Western Australian coast. The circumstances surrounding its loss remain controversial to this day. www.awm.gov.au

21.01.2022 On this day 1943: 2/6th Independent Company capture Kaiapit, New Guinea. Kaiapit was needed for the airstrip that was to be constructed there once the Japanese had been driven from the area. Kaiapit became a base for the 7th Divisions advance up the Markham Valley. www.awm.gov.au
