21.01.2022 An LBCA member has asked us to share the above link, reminding us that now is the time to slash and mow long grass, before the grass cures in the hot weather. Grass fires could be the threat to some areas this year, given the bumper spring. Remember too, that long grass offers a haven to snakes and vermin.

20.01.2022 Weekday night closure of the Kings Highway at Clyde Mountain from Monday 12 October Transport for NSW will carry out essential maintenance work on Clyde Mountai...n including slope stabilisation in response to recent rainfall. 20.01.2022 Hi folks. The LBCA Committee has pulled together the following brief guide to assist Long Beach residents in preparing for the forthcoming bushfire season and other emergencies. It contains summary information and authoritative links to a range of resources which should be of use to Long Beach residents. It's only 2 pages - you may wish to print it out. Thanks to Robin Eckerman on the Committee for pulling this together. We also thank Kylie Clarke for her assistance to Robin in collating the resources. http://www.eckermann.com.au/LBCA.html LBCA Emergency Preparedness Guide http://www.eckermann.com.au/LBCA.html

10.01.2022 Additional bridge lift for Batemans Bay Bridge The remaining barge used for marine construction of the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement will leave the Clyde River on Saturday 14 November. The community is advised of an additional opening of the Batemans Bay Bridge on Saturday morning, to allow the barge to pass through.... The barge, named AMS 1807, housed a crane, workers and other materials used to build the new bridge piers. A lift opening is scheduled for Saturday 14 November between 8am and 9am, weather permitting, and will take up to 20 minutes. This activity is required to take place during this timeframe to take advantage of favourable tidal conditions to safely transport the barge. The bridge lift will allow the barge to pass under the existing bridge before it is transported north to Sydney. All vessel operators in the area should exercise extreme caution, keep a proper lookout and comply with local buoyage and signage. The lift will take up to 20 minutes, and motorists will experience delays along the Princes Highway, the Kings Highway and other local roads. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys and allow additional travel time. Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to follow the bridge signals when crossing the bridge. If conditions are not suitable for the lift, the community will be notified of a new date and time. Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time. For the latest traffic updates download the Live Traffic NSW App, visit livetraffic.com or call 132 701. Regards, The Project Team

08.01.2022 Hi Long Beach dog owners. We have had reports to this site of kennel cough in the area - an owner of an unvaccinated pooch has reported that her dog has contracted this condition in Long Beach. Probably a good time to avoid using communal water bowls and keeping a bit of an eye on your dog. I'm also sharing a useful post from Long Beach Dog Walkers about plants which can be toxic to dogs. A number of these, like Yuccas, are very common in Long Beach. WARNING - Toxic po...isoning If any of you have dogs and have Yuccas tree’s , please remove the yuccas from your property or ensure your canine or pet can not get near them. Yuccas are not only toxic but poisonous to canines. Yuccas create toxic poisonous shock, that creates an infection. This is deadly and can result in losing your canine, should this not be treated or attended to straight away. The articles do not tell you how toxic and how quick the poisoning travels through blood stream when being cut or deeply pricked by one. Here is a list of plants toxic to canines - Agapanthus (Roots) Aloe (Leaves) Angels Trumpet (All parts) Apricots (Stem, bark and seed kernels) Arum Lily (Spine and bulbs) Asparagus Fern (All parts) Avocado (Fruit, leaves, bark, seed) Azalea (All parts) Bird of Paradise (Fruit, seeds) Caladium (All parts) Cape Lilac (Berries) Clematis (All parts) Cotoneaster glaucophyllus (Fruit) Cycads (Seeds) Daffodils (All parts but especially bulbs) Daphne (Berries, bark, leaves) Dumb Cane Dieffenbachia (All parts) Foxgloves (Leaves, seeds, flowers) Frangipani (Sap) Gladioli (Bulbs) Hellebore (All parts) Hyacinth (Bulbs, leaves, flowers) Hydrangea (Leaves, stems) Ivy (All parts of most varieties) Jonquil (Bulbs) Kalanchoe (All parts) Lantana (All parts) Lily (All parts) Lily of the Valley (All parts) Lobelia (All parts) Macadamia (Nuts) Fruit Salad Plant Monstera (Unripe fruit) Morning Glory (Seeds) Nightshade (All parts) Oleander (All parts, including dead leaves) Onion (Bulbs) Ornamental chilli (Fruit) Philodendron (All parts) Poinsettia (Leaves, flowers) Rhododendron (All parts) Rhubarb (Leaves) Savin Juniper (All parts) Sweet Pea (Seeds, pods) Tomato Plants (Leaves) Tulip (Bulbs) Umbrella Plant (All parts) Wandering Jew (Leaves, stems, sap) Wisteria (Seeds, pods) Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow (All parts) also known as Brunfelsia pauciflora Yucca (All parts)

06.01.2022 Is anyone missing two labradors? A chocolate brown and a goldie? If so they're in the front yard of 14 Long Beach Road.

05.01.2022 It's bin night at Long Beach - so for a bit of light relief from more serious issues, just this once, I'm sharing the ditty I wrote as a reminder for my neighbours and friends (with the help of Don McLean!) Have you been dancing your bin out to the road this year? THE DAY THE BIN-DANCE DIED ... A long, long time ago I can still remember when those bin nights used to make me smile And I knew if I had my chance That I could do a bin-night dance And make some people happy for a while July and August made us shiver But each bin night Council delivered Bin trucks to our door step Whilst we did a neat quick step. I can’t remember if I tried To stop the bin truck driving by But something touched me deep inside The day....the truck....drove by. We started singing Bye bye last week’s leftover pie Danced our wheelies to the kerbside But the truck passed us by Them bad truck boys were drinking whisky and rye Singin’, ‘this will be the day bin-night dies’ This will be the day bin-night dies. Now for 2 weeks we’ve been on our own And time’s not kind, to last week’s chicken bones And that’s not how its meant to be Well, a letter came, by the Council penned Saying no bin trucks till the dancing ends It’s times like these you need your friends The day..the bin-dance.died And they were singing Bye bye last week’s leftover pie Till you stop your bin night dancing All the trucks will drive by Your dance moves suck, no matter how hard you try Singin’ ‘bin dancing makes truck drivers cry’ I met a girl singing rubbish blues And I asked her for some bin truck news She just smiled and turned away I approached bin night this week with dread I wanted to waltz, but I walked instead And my neighbour said ‘the bin truck’s on its way’ In the street the poets dreamed, the bins rolled forth, and the prawn heads steamed Not a word was spoken Our bin night spell was broken, Still we were singing Bye bye last week’s left over pie Danced our red bins to the kerbside Till the truck passed us by Those bad truck boys were drinking whisky and rye Singin’ this will be the day bin-dance dies. (repeat chorus and fade out...) Colleen Krestensen 2020 with help from Don McLean 1971

04.01.2022 Who has noticed the beautiful display of white gum blossoms in the burnt forests of the Clyde Mountain this year? I took this closeup this afternoon, near the top of the Clyde. The trees are covered with blossoms, given the new shoots. Usually they’re mainly on the crown. More beauty emerging in the aftermath of such an ugly fire season.
