24.01.2022 Firefighters have been busy from border to border over the last few days, with a number of fires starting in these heatwave conditions. There's been more than ...100 fires in the past 48 hours, including one on the Queensland border where firefighters were flown in, and crop and grass fires near Berrigan in southern NSW. The hot weather continues today - so stay cool, stay safe and stay up to date. Pics: Morgan Fraser and Greyd'n Davis

24.01.2022 On this day last year NSW recorded 17 concurrent Emergency Warnings. Communities in the Blue Mountains, Clarence Valley, Richmond Valley, Walcha, Armidale, Namb...ucca, Kempsey, Tenterfield, and the Mid Coast were all being impacted by fire. At 6pm 94 fires were burning across the state. While the losses on that day were significant they could have been far worse were it not for the extraordinary efforts of firefighters and community members. See more

23.01.2022 Today marks 40 years since five young lives were tragically lost battling a bush fire at Waterfall. It was 3rd November 1980 - just before 5am crews were alerted to a bush fire burning near McKell Avenue. Numerous brigades responded to the southern end of the Royal National Park, working to contain a large fire which was burning under mild conditions.... The conditions on the day were cool, the temperature reached 19c, humidity was low and southerly winds prevailed. As the southerly winds increased in strength late afternoon, the fire transitioned from the forested area into heath, increasing the intensity and spread. The fire rapidly headed in a northerly direction towards the Uloola trail. It was on this trail where a fire tanker from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade was overrun by fire. It was at this location where five brave firefighters were lost - Steve Crunkhorn, 26, Gregory Rolfe, 24, Vernon Stedman, 21, William Cummings, 21 and David Marshall, 19. The fire was contained days later after burning 2,246 hectares of the Royal National Park. We remember these brave firefighters.

23.01.2022 Firefighters are working to contain the Kiama Ave Fire burning south of the Currarong community at Jervis Bay (Shoalhaven). The fire has crossed into the Beecro...ft Weapons Range limiting the ability of crews to directly attack the fire. The fire is not threatening homes and is expected to burn into the evening. 22.01.2022 It’s grass like this that make firefighters nervous. Here near Bungendore, the grass is not completely ‘cured’ or dry, however hot weather accelerates this proc...ess. In other areas like the Riverina, the grass has cured. This, combined with today’s hot, dry and windy weather makes for dangerous fire weather. For this reason a total fire ban is in place for the Northern, Southern and Eastern Riverina. Report unattended fires to Triple Zero. Have a safe day and stay cool. #nswrfs #grassfires See more

22.01.2022 Here is one very good reason, of many, to be prepared and leave early. Remember!! This is a controlled fire. Not a wild fire

20.01.2022 Mother Nature can be so kind and very cruel. After recent rains, farmers across NSW have been looking to harvest the best crop in years. Unfortunately this afte...rnoon a number of fires started as a result of lightning - just as farmers prepare to harvest. A single hectare can be worth at least $1000 to a farmer. Fires this afternoon burnt as much as 500ha in just a couple of hours. Were it not for the rapid response of farmers, firies and water bombers the losses could have been far worse. 15.01.2022 It's been a hot and sweaty night across many parts of NSW, with temperatures in the low to mid 30s in some areas. It's going to be another hot day today, especially in the central and nothern parts of NSW. Some respite is on the way with a southerly change expected later today.

15.01.2022 Today we’re flying our flags at half mast to mark the anniversary of the start of the Currowan bushfire. The Black Summer fires devastated 79 per cent of ou...r shire’s landscape, with the loss of three lives and more than 500 homes destroyed. It’s been traumatic year and the coming weeks will be tough for many in the community. At this time of reflection, we are grateful to the emergency responders who protected us, and we honour the courage of so many residents who worked together to provide safety and comfort in those dark days. 14.01.2022 Know what to do when you hear a siren or see the flashing blue or red lights of an approaching emergency vehicle? When you hear a siren or see the flashing blu...e or red lights of an approaching emergency vehicle: * Give way to the emergency vehicle if you are stopped do not move until it is safe to proceed, even if the traffic light is green. If you are moving, you must slow down and stop if necessary to avoid a collision with the emergency vehicle. * Move out of the way as soon as you can safely do so * Move over as much as you can to the left-hand side of the road or, if possible, move onto the road shoulder or breakdown lane. On multi-lane roads, try to move into the left lane to let the emergency vehicle pass * Drivers on both sides of the road should be prepared to move out of the path of emergency vehicles * Emergency vehicles with sirens sounding or lights flashing responding to urgent situations are not required to follow the rules, as long as it is safe for them to do so. Drivers should always be extra cautious when they see flashing lights or hear sirens. https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au//approaching-emerg

11.01.2022 Today we are sending a Strike Team to Port Macquarie to help clean up the aftermath of the 2021 floods that have devastated so many people. Thanks David, Noel, Kris and Emma for giving up your time to help out up north. Safe travels.

11.01.2022 I think we all deserve a break this long weekend. So if you’re travelling, take your time, take a break and arrive safely. Don’t forget to set a watch zone in the Fires Near Me app for the area you are visiting. Have a great long weekend.

11.01.2022 Our Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook: December 2020 February 2021 is out today, and shows that large parts of NSW west of the Great Dividing Range face ab...ove normal fire conditions, as well as grassland areas of the ACT and into north eastern Victoria. Grass and crop fires are the main concern in these locations for the summer months as the growth dries out in the warmer weather. WA has largely missed out on the rainfall in 2020 and conditions are very dry, with parts of the south and south west coasts expecting above normal fire conditions through summer. 09.01.2022 These volunteers with the NSW Rural Fire Service now have a critically important bulk water carrier thanks to generous donations made during the 2019-20 bush fi...re season This time last year, and especially over Australia Day, Australians and our American friends came together in the spirit of Mateship to raise money for bush fire recovery. The crew pictured is with the Lake Albert Rural Fire Brigade. Ten local brigades in the NSW RFS - Riverina Zone of New South Wales pooled their allocated donations to purchase the prime mover and fit it out with safety gear like radios and smart devices. The water carrier and the dedicated volunteers are a critical local resource, especially because there can be little naturally occurring water in some areas in times of drought. The bulk water carrier provides a timely water supply to frontline appliances (it can fill up 6 fire tankers in one load) and provides help for remote structure fires. We thank everyone in the US and around the world who donated in our nation’s time of need.

09.01.2022 Daylight Savings It’s that time of the year again when we wind our clocks forward by 1 hour. Don’t forget to test your smoke alarms and to change the batteries

07.01.2022 Today marks the anniversary of the tragic death of NSW RFS volunteer Colin Burns. Colin lost his life on his property at Belowra, as he was making his way to th...e local fire shed to help protect local residents who were sheltering from fires. Colin was a long time member of the Belowra Brigade in the NSW RFS Far South Coast Team, initially joining in the late 1980s. We remember Colin and our hearts go out to his family, friends and fellow volunteers today.

07.01.2022 Over the next few weeks we will see a change to the icons on FNM. We are slowly moving over to an Australian wide warning system. Have a look at the link below. 07.01.2022 UPDATE!!! We have had our sign fixed !!! A big thanks to Ian .... the handy man and Karen .... the quick dialer, who took time out to get our sign up and going again Jacob from HiVis, you are the man... Without your help today we wouldn’t have a working sign. The biggest expense today was time and a few phone call. Thank again HiVis!! And a thank you to our fantastic community and friends from out of town for standing behind our brigade. We greatly appreciate your support Why? Just why? Our lovely community here at Long Beach and Maloneys Beach have worked with our brigade to raise money for everything we have. So when vandals continue to brake our equipment, they are also braking your equipment. Since we have had our Fire Danger Rating board, it has been broken several times. This is a cost to the brigade that we really don’t need. On Friday night / Saturday morning someone, who clearly has no respect for the brigade or our community has selfishly broken it good and proper. This time not only has the arrow been broken but the gears that operate the system has been forced one to many times. There is thousands of dollar worth of safety equipment sitting there, doing nothing. A warning system for our community, now useless! The person / people who have done this must not have been effected by fire last season. Or just have no heart. Why would anyone want to damage and destroy equipment that could save lives this fire season.? So now we need to..... A. Fix the damage ( at a cost to us, so it’s a cost to you ) B. Install some sort of protection board or fencing or something ( at a cost to us, so once again, a cost to you ) C. Install a camera or two, so we can catch these people and make them pay for the damage they have done. ( and once again, another cost to us, so..... yep! You guessed it, a cost to you ) We have also had some damage done around the station over time. So far nothing that our hard working volunteers, with a few dollars, have been able to fix. We have recently up-graded our security system. With up-graded cameras that capture a larger area with much clearer footage, so it’s easier to identify anyone doing the wrong thing up there If anyone has any information or has seen anyone doing the wrong thing around ANY of our equipment and station please contact Crime Stoppers or our local police station Photo are from when the board was installed

01.01.2022 Today marks the official end to the quietest fire season in more than a decade, a welcome and stark contrast to last year. This season, NSW RFS members have res...ponded to just over 5,500 bush and grass fires that have burnt 30,963 hectares across NSW, considerably less than the 11,400 fires and 5.5 million hectares lost last season. Thank you to our incredible members who continuously step up to help when called upon, protecting communities across the state

01.01.2022 Temperatures are continuing to rise across NSW - and we're entering the hottest and most dangerous part of the day. There's currently 45 bush and grass fires ac...ross the state. These are dangerous fire conditions and will remain until a southerly change sets in later today. The change has reached the south-east of the state and is expected in Sydney at around 5pm.
