17.01.2022 A Beauty Spot in Longreach Take a look at the green, and its surroundings. See the delightful poinciana gilliesiti--Bird of Paradise trees to you and me. I mak...e bold to say that they are making the most spectacular show in Longreach. How impressive a row on each side of the approaches to the town could be. Throughout the summer and autumn they flower, and carry on acacia-like foliage the rest of the year. Flanking the other boundaries of the playing area are rows of hibiscus in full flower, lantana and a most effectively trimmed hedge of Athol pines. Add to this the tecoma, cannas and roses, and you have an area well worth a visit. And we welcome visitors at all times. After spending sometime removing the mould from the bowls the players went into competition at the week-end, and the position in each competition is becoming clearer. (By "Kitty Lover" Longreach Leader 1950) The Longreach Bowls Club held games every weekend and night games Wednesday night with the season’s championship held in October. In March 1932 A proposal was put forward to establish a bowling club In Longreach. A site was secured near the railway, and arrangements to have a supply of water from the railway pumping station. Finally in April of that year the club was formed with the first order of business being the putting down greens with advice being sort from other clubs and the specifications required for local Council. (April 1932 The Evening News). But why did the location of the club changes and did it ever use the proposed location at the railway? Over the years the Bowls Club has seen several upgrades to the facilities including the top dressing of the green over the years. In 1948 the green was closed for 8 weeks for top dressing by Mr S. Snell, the greenkeeper and the results of his labours brought forth commendation from all sides even though the green itself, was responding rather slowly to top dressing, due mainly to cool weather and absence of rain. In recent times the club erected a retractable shade cover at a cost of $120,000 through funding over the greens to protect the players from the harsh sun of the outback. The Longreach Bowls CLUB also has a strong link with other community groups and has helped support them where possible. In 2011 a corporate fundraiser competition held over the past seven weeks at the Longreach Bowls Club raised $2,063 for the town band. (ABC) See more
