22.01.2022 Hello everyone. We are wondering if anyone might know what is the object below? They were donated from a station in the region but we are unsure what they were used for, let us know what you think!

19.01.2022 Did you know? The Eternal Memorial Wall at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame was dedicated to people who were working in the rural industries and lost thei...r lives, but it has been broadened to anyone who has a love of the bush, or a bush heritage, who wants their loved ones remembered. The Eternal Muster Wall memorial is a tribute to honour and remember with love the many generations of Australians across our vast land who have lived, loved and lost their lives in the bush. Their enduring legacy will continue to live on in our hearts for ever. This evolving memorial combines the inspiration of Tony Estcourt with support and assistance from the central western Queensland and the New South Wales branches of the Australian Stockman`s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre. #eternalmusterwall #stockmanshalloffame #visitoutbackqueensland #loveofthebush #honour

18.01.2022 Looking to visit in 2021, have a look at what Outback Aussie Tours has to offer!

15.01.2022 This week the museum received a visit from the grandson of one of Longreach’s early resident Jack Hurkett. Jack was considered to be a pioneer of suburbia when he started a corner store selling groceries and confectionary. He was an agent for Radiola and Tasma Wireless Receivers and he conducted a car hire service. In 1935 he made two long distance trips in what was then record time. Jack purchased an 8 cylinder Hudson Sedan and drove from Brisbane to Longreach in 26 hours, then turned around and made A Fast Run to Toowoomba and return in 63 hours 5 minutes non stop. On Christmas Eve 1935 a fire broke out that destroyed the shop and adjoining house located on the corner of Crane and Duck Streets the present home of Orlando Orchards. (2020)

12.01.2022 We have a lot of visitors over the last few weeks asking what they smell is in the air! Acacia cambagei, commonly known as gidgee, stinking wattle or stinking gidgee. The leaves, bark (when wet), and flowers produce a characteristic odour, vaguely reminiscent of boiled cabbage, gas or sewerage that accounts for the common name of "stinking gidgee". There are a couple of these trees around Nogo Cottage at the museum.

11.01.2022 The Powerhouse Museum will be closed for some construction on Wednesday 18th September and reopen Thursday 19th September. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

11.01.2022 Can anyone guess what this is?

10.01.2022 It's 'Guess the Item' time again.... Can you name the item and what it's purpose is?

09.01.2022 Willcox and Gibbs Handcrank Sewing Machine C1876. Only did chain stitch, so if the cotton broke the whole line of sewing would unravel. Belonged to Miss Alice Avery of Longreach who became a registered nurse and whilst specialising patients she would sit and sew. As the machine was hand wound it didn’t make any noise. Donated by Mrs Boo Hanrick.

06.01.2022 Guess the item! Our museums officer is pretty sure of what it is but lets see if you know!!!

03.01.2022 Masonic Regalia Collar: This collar is the Craft collar of the Immediate Past Master of the Lodge. The attachments to the collar are the jewels of office of the elected officers (there are 5 principal officers of the Lodge elected by members. Worshipful Master, Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Treasurer and Secretary).and are representative of stonemasons tool. This collection represents three of the five officers. The Worshipful Master wears the right angle of a square. ...It is not a measuring square like carpenters use but a square used to make certain an angle (on stone) is true. To a Mason it symbolises virtue. The Senior Wardens jewel of office is the Level, a stonemasons instrument used to check the level of horizontal surfaces. It symbolises that all Masons meet on the level, without regard to social, political or religious status. The Junior Wardens jewel of office is the Plumb, used for checking the alignment of a vertical surface. It symbolises upright behaviour among Masons. The other pieces in the photograph are Craft Gauntlets worn on the arm of each of the officers. See more
