25.01.2022 Embarking on a renovation journey with your partner is one of the ultimate tests of relationship endurance. An experience that, in a way, feels similar to having your first child. So hats off to those who take on both responsibilities at the same time, you are my heroes! For me, I could spend my days renovating. For my hubby, it’s a different story! On the whole, we are both pretty handy and are proud of what we can accomplish together, but I think there is more DIY in... my blood than in his, which means I am (often) the one leading the renovation process to achieve the vision that I have for our house, and I can be quite pushy. I am sure he would agree with me that I have a better eye for design anyway, and that overall, I am also better at planning, organising and delivering (hubby edit: grudgingly agree). But to make sure we walk on this journey together, it’s important to know how to compromise and not being afraid to reassess what you can #DIY and when it’s best to hire professionals when things go pear-shaped. And tomorrow I will share a perfect example of this. So stay tuned! . . . . . . #renovationcouple #loverenovate #renovationproject #renovation #renovationlife #diycouple #houserenovation #renovationrealities #myrenovationproject #renovationtips #projecthome #loverenovation #renotips #renovationmaison #renorumbles #interiordecoration #interiorinspo #decorate See more

22.01.2022 I hate my new floor! New hybrid floorboards installed by professionals. 110sqm completed in two days...What’s your first impression? Don’t feel embarrassed if you are not fond of it. It wasn’t love at first sight for me either. ... I remember running to my friends’ house completely disheartened about it. I did not like the contrast and the variety in colour, especially the dark pieces. It looks like a patchwork quilt. Whoops! All this time searching for the perfect floorboard, and what? Can you 'return' a floor? In my vision, I wanted a light and warm floor (think Tasmanian Oak) with a seamless transition. And the fact that it is hybrid was not the issue. The issue was that I just didn’t like it. See, when I chose it, the sample did not have as much contrast, so it was a real surprise to me. But once we brought the furniture back in and install the skirting boards, that feeling slowly started to fade away. So, if you are feeling the same, remember that an empty room feels totally different once it’s furnished. My Tips: To avoid any disappointment make sure you check with your supplier. Ask them to open one or two boxes so you can see what the planks really look like. But if there is one thing that I LOOOOOOVE about our new floor, it’s how resistant and easy to clean it is. Two things that were very important to me when making my final decision. Anyway, I might decide to change the floor fifteen years down the track, but shsssssh!....don’t tell my hubby! . . . . . . . #renovationcouple #loverenovate #renovationproject #renovation #renovationlife #diycouple #houserenovation #renovationrealities #myrenovationproject #renovationtips #projecthome #loverenovation #renotips #renovationmaison #renorumbles #interiordecoration #interiorinspo #decorate #flooring #choosingflooring #hybridflooring #flooringideas #flooringdesign
21.01.2022 CHOOSING FLOORING | Does this photo look familiar to you? Yes, this is what choosing a new floor for your house looks like. First, you need to decide what type of floorboards you want (vinyl, laminate, hybrid, engineered, timber, bamboo, etc.), then you need to pick a colour. Each type has its benefits and drawbacks, and each type also comes with a different price tag. More often than not, your budget will dictate your decision . And because flooring sets the tone of... your entire home, it's a decision you want to get right, which can feel quite overwhelming. It took me 8 months to decide! And because I was on a tight budget, I had to compromise on the one I really loved (an engineered limewash European oak from bosch timber floors) for a more affordable option - a hybrid FirmFit Flooring floor from Trevors Carpets (more about that soon in a new post). My tip: ask retailers if you can take home some samples. Try them in different rooms and in different lighting. You will be amazed at how different they look in your house. The last thing you want is buyer’s remorse for such a large and long-lasting investment. So keep exploring until you discover the right flooring for you and can make a confident decision. And if you need any advice or help, don't hesitate to reach out to me. I am well informed when it comes to floorboards :-) . . . . #loverenovate #renovationproject #renovation #houserenovation #renovationrealities #myrenovationproject #renovationtips #projecthome #loverenovation #renotips #renovationmaison #flooring #renovationlife #choosingflooring #hybridflooring #flooringideas #flooringdesign #engineeredflooring #interiordecoration #interiorinspo #decorate . . featuring samples from Carpet Court Lifewood Harvey Norman Choices Flooring See more
20.01.2022 Choosing your new fabric is, of course, the most important choice you will make in preparation for your new project and it's also the fun bit! But, how much fabric do you need to upholster an armchair? Here is a cheat sheet I found to help you estimate your fabric needs. Unfortunately it is only in yards (a yard = 0.91 metres), so if you use the same measurements in the image you should have some extra for ‘just in case’ scenarios.... Scroll through the images to see what fabric I bought for this project (and another one coming soon) from my fav fabric shop - Self Tissus France, and keep an eye out for the reveal on Tuesday! . . . #myvintagehome #retrofurniture #vintagefurniture #midcenturyfurniture #furnituremaker #handmadefurniture #handmadedesign #furnitureartist #furnituremaking #originalfurniture #custommade #customcreations #loomandbloomdesign
17.01.2022 Since today is #TuesdayTip, I thought I would start by sharing my biggest tip ever: For everything you do in your house, that is not #DIY, always get a minimum of three quotes and shop around for the best deal. Over the years, I’ve learnt that there can be a massive variance between quotes, but remember, cheaper is not always better. Do your due diligence and don’t be afraid to inspect your tradie’s previous work, or ask for recommendations. After all, you would never employ ...someone without reading their CV first! I am still astonished by how many of my friends do not take the time to compare prices and services. And because I would hate you to get ripped off, here are a few more tips when asking for a quote: Be as specific as possible about what you’re looking for to get the most accurate quotes. This includes: What exactly is the scope of the work? When do you want it done? (do you want it done asap or are you flexible?) Where do you want it? (is it at your place, or someone else’s?) What material is required (for instance, will you be providing the paint to your painter, the light fittings to your sparky, the tiles to your tilers, etc? or do you need them to include this in their quote?) How long will it take to get the job done? And don’t forget to be polite! Services such as hipages is a good starting point and will save you time and make dealing with tradies really easy post your job on their website or app, sit back and local tradies will call you with a quote. But there is nothing like a good recommendation from people you trust! . . . . . . #loverenovate #renovationproject #renovation #houserenovation #renovationrealities #myrenovationproject #renovationtips #projecthome #loverenovation #renotips #renovationmaison #renorumbles #womenwhorenovate #womenwhorenovatehomes See more
14.01.2022 How $15 saved our marriage | So here we are, ready to lay the floorboards that I spent month choosing. I feel confident my husband & I can tackle this job together, and for some good reasons: I watched countless How-To videos on YouTube, bought a laminate cutter & heard from friends that it’s a fairly easy job to do. When I took this picture, we had been working on it for 1hr and I was quite pleased with the result & our progress so far. But by the end of the day, it was a... totally different story. What you see on the picture is exactly what it looked like 8hrs down the track. We did not make any more progress! Maybe, for most DIYers laying floorboard is easy, but for us there were a lot of fiddly cuts and adjustments to make. And after a whole day, my husband had enough. But on the other side, I wasn’t ready to call it offmy friends managed to do it, why couldn’t I? So inevitably, we ended up having a big argument. One so big that I realised it could seriously damage our relationship. So I let go of my ego and jumped online to search for a local tradie to do the job instead. I found a good one who only charged me $15/sqm and laid the whole house in less than 2 days. And these my friends, are the best $15 I have ever spent in my whole life! Cheaper than a divorce for sure!!! The moral of this story is that often conflict arises when one person refuses to compromise or let go. My Tips: Before you start your renovation project, each of you should make a list: must have; would be nice; don't care. That last item is crucial. When the choice doesn't make a difference to you, either way, be the one to compromise. As long as you're each compromising some of the time, everybody will wind up happy over something. Something I am getting better and better at every day . . . . . . . #renovationcouple #loverenovate #renovationproject #renovation #renovationlife #diycouple #houserenovation #renovationrealities #myrenovationproject #renovationtips #projecthome #loverenovation #renotips #renovationmaison #renorumbles #interiordecoration #interiorinspo #decorate #flooring #choosingflooring #hybridflooring #flooringideas #flooringdesign See more
12.01.2022 Tada! I am super proud of how my armchairs turned out. The fun part was choosing the new fabric and accent my armchair with the yellow piping to add a bit of contrast. Isn’t it so chic? In Australia, and especially in Perth, I find the fabric choices very limited, so during a trip to France, I ran to one of my fav shop, Self Tissus France, to buy this beautiful white and linen fabric, plus a different one for another upcycling project that I will be sharing with you soon. 11.01.2022 I thought I would take a break from the reno, to share another passion of mine: upcycling! Not only have I always loved restoring furniture (I inherited this from my dad who used to restore antiques in France), but I also believe that I contribute to a better world when I do so. No point buying new items when you can reuse existing ones, and give them a second life. So, in the coming days, I will be sharing two of my favs projects that I did a few years ago. 10.01.2022 As I said in my previous post, I have always been a massive fan of upcycling, so when I found this duo of vintage chairs in the street that looked very tired, I decided to save them from going to the tip, and restore them to their full glory! I had never done upholstery before, so this was a first for me, and I love a good challenge! Reupholstering an armchair might seem like something reserved for the professionals. That many staples, curves, tricky joints, and perfec...tly stretched fabrics can appear overwhelming when it comes to recreating it. So my advice when taking on a job like this, is to try to salvage the old fabric to use it as a pattern by removing it carefully (so choose the right armchair that will let you do this). Also, be sure to take detailed pictures of what your chair looks like before you start removing all of the pieces, or else you may not remember how it goes back together. And remember that whatever you remove first will be the part of the chair that you’ll put back together last. Finally, reupholstering an armchair will require some basic sewing skills and some time. Get ready to put in anywhere between 10 to 15 hours for this project. If you don’t have any of this, it will take you a little longer to complete it. . . . . #upcycle #upcyclefurniture #upcycledecor #upholstery #armchairupholstery #handmadeupholstery #handmade #furnituremakeover #furniturerestoration #refinishedfurniture #upcycler #upcycledfurniture #furnitureflip #retrohome #vintageliving #myvintagehome #retrofurniture #vintagefurniture #midcenturyfurniture #furnituremaker #handmadefurniture #handmadedesign #furnitureartist #furnituremaking #originalfurniture #custommade #customcreations #loomandbloomdesign See more
09.01.2022 TILE REMOVAL | If there is one thing that I hated with a passion in our house, it was those ugly slate tiles in the kitchen and the hallway (Although some of my friends loved them!). So I showed no remorse when removing them. Hard to imagine they will ever come back into trend! While removing tiles is a basic renovation job that anyone can do, you might want to weigh the pros and cons of hiring a professional. In the beginning, I felt pretty confident I could do it myself,... but slate tiles are slightly harder to remove than ceramic ones. In #homerenovation, some jobs are better left to the pros. In our case, it was more time and cost-effective to hire someone to do it and ensure the surface was clean and smooth to lay the floorboards. Plus, it only took them a couple of hours to do the whole surface. And what a difference it makes! The whole space now feels brighter. 06.01.2022 I've always loved having art in my home. Each piece in my eclectic collection has a significance for me. This one was an impulse buy from an exhibition featuring my friend Natty Scholtz's artworks at Moore & Moore Cafe in Fremantle in 2014. Feel so special to me.
05.01.2022 OUR LITTLE BRICK HOME | A wise person once said to me: live in your house for a while before undertaking any major remodelling. Learn its flow, and what works and doesn’t work for you. All of this will inform your choices when you make your plans to change things around. When we first moved into our house in 2015, the owner had just completed a 2-year renovation and we were the first tenants to get the keys The house is a typical Australian suburban brick house whi...ch at first glance, doesn’t scream pretty (I am not fond of those bricks at all!). But from day #1, we dreamed this house would one day become ours. Located on a corner block, the house is overlooking a big and beautiful park, which means: We only have two neighbours (and they are lovely, thank god for this!) All we can see from the large windows is the large paddock in the park surrounded by bush making us feel like we live in the countryside (which reminds me of where I grew up in my native France). Three years later, the owner decided to sell and gave us first dibs. At the time, I was only working two days/week while my husband was finishing his 3-year Uni degree. Long story short, we managed to get the bank on board and could finally call this place ours. After three years of living here, I knew exactly what I wanted to change, and how I would improve it. So here we are ready for our first reno, on a tight budget, but with a master spreadsheet to keep us on track (#spreadsheetqueen) Flip through the images to see what the house looked like when we moved in in 2015. #firsthome #firstimeowners #ourreno #mumswhorenovate #renovator #renovation #renolife #housemakeover #renovating #renovationproject #renovationjourney #brickhouse See more
05.01.2022 WELCOME | Hey you, lovely. Welcome to my new Facebook account! So if you are wondering what exactly you’ll be getting if you stick around.hey I’m Cecile. I wear a few different hats (but never a beret despite my French heritagethey never really suited me!). I’m a #designer, #creator, #maker, #upcycler, #handywoman, #vintage and #bargainhunter. I’ve been a #DIYer from before I can remember and completed so many projects over the years. ... Growing up, I spent a lot of time in my dad’s workshop, playing with tools, and learning from him (he is a very talented cabinet-maker, craftsman and antique renovator). I have a background in fine arts & marketing, and a passion for architecture (Did I tell you I have a soft spot for #kevinmccloud?) After more than 20years in rentals, we finally bought our first house over a year ago in Perth (Western Australia), and since then, we’ve been hammering our long-time planned renovation, one project at a time. In my house, you will find a lot of pre-loved furniture, furniture that holds a story and that I either rescued from ending up at the tip, or bought second-hand over the years. Of course, I would love to buy designer brands, but the reality isI can’t afford them. My goal with Loom and Bloom Design is to not only share my passion for #DIYprojects and my creations, but inspire you and help you take small steps towards your own creative journey. On this account I will be sharing all sorts of things: photos from our renovation as we tick that TO-DO list, upcycling projects, tips, mistakes I made (so you won’t reproduce them), daily inspiration as well as recommendations for some amazing Facebook accounts I think are worth checking out . So don’t expect my page to look seamless, with the same theme regurgitated over and over. It will be a patchwork of who I am and what I love. Ok so that’s a hefty post, but I hope it gives you a bit more insight into why I am here and what I intend to share on this new business account. No more talklet the journey begin! See more
05.01.2022 To or not to double glaze your windows? For us, there was no question about it. Coming from France where most of the new builds have double-glazed windows, and after three years living in this house, we knew we wanted to replace the four front windows with double-glazed ones. Given the size of our windows, it wasn’t going to be cheap, but we were prepared to bear the cost because we were aware of the long-term benefits and return on investment. Double glazed windows are m...ore energy-efficient as they can reduce heat loss or heat gain by almost 30%. . They reduce your energy usage and environmental impact (we barely use air-conditioning in summer anymore). . They limit the risk of mould by reducing condensation - the lifeblood of mould build-up. . Help with noise cancellation we clearly saw the difference! . Offer great resale benefit as double glazing is on many people’s wish lists when purchasing new homes. . There are many companies selling double-glazed windows, so do your due diligence and compare quotes. In Perth, we recommend DuoGlass and West Coast Double Glazing (we went with the first one). . Check before/after and in-progress images below. . . #windows #doubleglazing #doubleglazedwindows #loverenovate #renovationproject #renovation #houserenovation #renovationrealities #myrenovationproject #renovationtips #projecthome #loverenovation #renotips #renovationmaison See more
01.01.2022 What's that gap? After we removed our carpet and installed our hybrid floors, it wasn't long before we noticed the gap under the doors. But it took us a while before we did something about it. When my dad came over a couple of months ago, I simply asked me to add a little timber trim at the bottom of the door, et voila! No need to replace the door. See below for before and after photo. All I need to do now, is give the doors a good sand and a coat or two of paint.... I just thought I would share this as it can easily be overlooked when changing floors. . . . . . . . #renovationcouple #loverenovate #renovationproject #renovation #renovationlife #diycouple #houserenovation #renovationrealities #myrenovationproject #renovationtips #projecthome #loverenovation #renotips #renovationmaison #renorumbles #interiordecoration #interiorinspo #decorate #flooring #choosingflooring #hybridflooring #flooringideas #flooringdesigns See more
01.01.2022 BYE BYE CARPET | So here we areofficially the happy owners of our new home, and the first thing I did after cracking up a bottle of champagne, was to rip out the carpet in our entry room and living room. There is no carpet middle ground: either you love it or you hate it. I belong to the second category! The previous owner installed dark grey carpet in most rooms, and even after three years, it was still in very neat condition, but I loathe carpet, for two reasons: ... 1/ They collect dust, and even with a thorough and regular clean, I now realise how much dust can quickly accumulate. 2/ I much prefer the feel and look of floor boards, they can be wiped clean with water and they don’t hide musty smells. And here is another tip for you: if your carpet and underlay are still in great condition, why not sell them or advertise them for free on Gumtree Australia, Gumtree UK, leboncoin or facebookmarketplace? There are plenty of people looking for reclaimed materials for their renovation. Not only will it save you a trip to the tip, but it will also reduce your carbon footprint. Tick, Tick! . . . . #loverenovate #renovationproject #renovation #houserenovation #renovationrealities #myrenovationproject #renovationtips #projecthome #loverenovation #renotips #renovationmaison #renorumbles #carpetremoval #renovationlife See more
