20.01.2022 Hello peeps We’re back with another topic. Today’s topic is piston ring gaping. In most cases people think chucking a new set of rings on and away you go with the next step to their build. Now a percent of builds done like this may survive but will generally have a short life span. So it’s important to always check your gap to start with and then to work out what gap you will require for your particular application.... Most moderate performance applications will require a minimum of 0.016 for a 4.000 bore. As you move up into the different applications like Nitrous your gap will become a minimum of 0.028 and then turbo/supercharged applications will require a minimum of 0.024. Now there is physics behind these guidelines. The more heat/energy the ring will see, will gradually expand as do the pistons and cylinder bores. So if for argument sake if the top ring gap was too small but the rings will still want to expand, the ends will end up running into each other. And since the ring has no where to go, the outward pressure applied to the cylinder increases. The added force creates even more heat with rings trying to expand even more but again, no where to go. The likely outcome is catastrophic and something that no one wants to have happen to their freshly rebuilt block. As you can see in the pictures illustrating the rings being measured with a feeler gauge which was checked prior with micrometers to ensure thickness of feeler gauge was true. Then we had placed the ring onto the manual ring filer to adjust the gap,( as this build is a nitrous setup) and the standard gap was 0.01. Then we placed a dummy piston square to the bore about 1/2 down and placed the ring flush on top to verify what the gap was each time we took some material off one end of the ring. We do each cylinder individually so gaps are correct set for that particular cylinder. This way we have more consistency rather then to use one cylinder for all 8 sets of top and 2nd rings. Now most people will say that each bore should be identical to the next and in theory yes but practically no. It may be only a microns difference but that’s enough to do each cylinder individually. So please before you chuck a set of rings into your new build, make sure the gapping is done correctly or even speak with a builder to ask the question. Peace
20.01.2022 Here was one of our own personal build. A very strong and aggressive built 304. Good for 500+ at the fly. We do what we love doing and want all car enthusiasts that work with a tight budget to get them that awesome build they want and a more realistic range most people can afford. 16.01.2022 Hello peeps we’re busy as usual. Just thought we show you guys why is good to get your cast iron blocks hot tanked and not just get machining done and a quick cleaned first. Here we have a Holden 253 block that’s over 40 years old. It not only had 3 layers of paint but the water gallery was clogged up with a lot of rust. Now we find it’s most critical to hot tank the block and head/s after being stripped to have a good view on wether the block has damage (that couldn’t be se...en with layers of paint) such as cracks and hair line fractures. As you will see in some of the after pics, 1 welsh plug hole had been repaired sometime in its life. Now not saying that’s a bad thing but we would not have seen it with the paint and crud that was on this block. Also keep in mind that if your wanting to use an old V8 block wether it’s a Ford, Holden or even Chev just to name a few, you would want this process done first to make sure surface is clean to do visual inspection then if suspicious marks are found. To then do a crack test procedure to confirm wether or not it is a problem. It’s always better to spend a few dollers then serval thousands just to set your self up for a failure. Now depending on what power you are chasing, some older blocks and heads can be used but your engine builder would or should advise that you are limited to how much power you would be able to accomplish with your 40 year old foundation. Most times we recommend that if your chasing power figures over 500+ hp to consider buying either a younger 2nd hand block or even the safest choice would be to buy a brand new aftermarket block. I know that some blocks are no longer available, but if you want a good build don’t cut corners. That engine will last a life time if done right the first time Happy Thursday peeps. I’ll get back to work and stop bludging
16.01.2022 Hi Peoples We’re sorry that these last couple months we have been quiet on the FB page as we have had a fair bit of work on. But rest assured for all your enquires for your future build, you can still email it through to [email protected] and we’ll try ou...r best to get back to you in the new year. So on that note have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
14.01.2022 Hi Peeps Yes we’re back again with a follow up post of Harley’s reconditioned 304. To take back to the beginning. Harley came to us with a 304 and wanted it rebuilt but wanted it to have a bit more go then the standard 5L. So we discussed his options, worked with a budget and had a goal set. ... So we began stripping and uncovering some weird stuff the previous owner had done to it. But we made it happen. It took a while as most people can’t just fork out thousands upon thousands of dollers cause they have their own family to feed and keep a roof over their head. So we told him not to sweat it. It’s safe and we’ll get it done and waiting for him. The top end work you could say we went a little extra for this good bloke as we want our customers satisfaction and dreams to come true. So with work with the intake runners and throats. Recut all the seats (3 angle job), relapped the valves. Even got rid of the standard Oring seals and machine spring seats to suite posi seals. As well with any cam we get for our customers we match the correct springs to use if there required, which in this case were definitely required. It’s is a hydraulic flat tappet cam 286/286 with 110 LSA and .511 lift, that Camtechcams supply us and like all our customers builds unless they supply their own. The springs make an interesting topic as they are aftermarket LS Beehive springs, good for up to .600 lift. I know most people are like not possible, well we make anything possible. We actually went nearly all out on the top end to help match with this decent bottom end. Now it’s just a waiting game for the run in and power runs to see what this little injected 5L can do. At Looney’s Pro Building Blocks we do what it takes to bring your block back to life with more.
13.01.2022 Hi peeps We are very sorry for the great quietness as we have been flat out with numerous jobs. But just show we are still here. So I’d thought I share a pic of some products that we use on our builds from standard V8’s to the extreme builds. We use only the best from Rocket industries, Holley, ACL, AeroFlow, Hastings ARP, TurboSmart, Yella Terra and all the top quality brand products as well as common top quality products that Burson auto parts supply us with. Along side with the best machinist company, Westend who do most of our machining work. What ever the build may be, we will always have you covered with reliable parts, accuracy and overall top quality work
05.01.2022 These are the guys we use on all our customer’s builds. From standard ground cams to custom grinds
03.01.2022 Hi all Yes been a bit quiet on here as we’ve had a fair bit of work going. We just finished this tough little Holden 304 bottom end for a customer. When the block cam to ya it was in bad shape but after a bit of elbow grease and spit, she came up pretty good. To start with the block was filthy but that was an easy fix with our hot tank. Then the journals on both mains and big ends were pretty much shot. We could’ve saved it but we working within a budget for this customer, s...o we used a donor crankshaft that was still standard clearances and also not scored up. Also did some cleaning up in the valley, not only clears blocks casting defects but does help with oil flow( not by much but does help). Also rectified oil holes in lifter bores as some might know the back 4 lifter bore holes are not always concentric and can cause oil restrictions to lifters which in turn can cause damage and we don’t like that word, damage. Parts that were used were quality products supplied by the customer as well our own stock. We rebuilt this whole setup with a tight budget but still packing a good punch once the job is completed. With every job taken on, we take pride in our work and make sure you get exactly what you deserve. Wether it’s a 4,6 or 8 cyl block we have you covered here at Looney’s Pro Building Blocks. Feel free to contact us today for your next build
