25.01.2022 The count down begins! Lord Howe Island is a place of simple pleasures and six-star natural wonders. This view of Blinky Beach taken by @islandgirl2898 after a hike over Transit Hill really shows off our paradise on earth.... Once over Transit Hill, you will find yourself in the company of a few hundred nesting sooty terns at Blinky. Lord Howe is the only place in New South Wales where these birds nest, and they are literally everywhere at the moment. You will have to mind your step as you dodge their eggs! They can be very protective over their eggs and not fearful of people; it’s incredible being so close to them come and see for yourself! @visitnsw @Australia See more

Lord Howe featured as one of only 25 destinations worldwide for 2021 and stood out as the the last paradise. The island was recognised for it’s ‘Protecting Paradise Program’ and its holistic approach to the many conservation programs undertaken for the protection of the environment and island species.

21.01.2022 Lord Howe Island's Biosecurity Dogs play a vital role in protecting the island from unwanted pests. This year has proved busy, with a number of significant items being intercepted. Interceptions included... 1 mouse; 2 small reptiles; 1 invasive weed (thought to have been previously eradicated from the island); 1 long eared bat (a small insectivorous bat);1 un-permitted animal import; and 1 un-permitted aquatic plant import. Awesome work @sebbiandzuma and their dedicated handlers in protecting paradise. Visit NSW Australia.com See more

21.01.2022 Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird situated at the southern end of the island make a fairly impressive backdrop for our lagoon, wouldn’t you agree? : @katharinaz

21.01.2022 Picturesque Neds Beach is located on the eastern side of Lord Howe Island. Neds Beach is famous for fish feeding and it offers excellent snorkelling opportunities directly from the beach. There is a distinctive type of reef with large foliose and vase shaped hard corals, whip corals, black coral, fan gorgonians, crinoids, colonial ascidians, coralliomorphs, basket stars and hydroids occupying the zone. There is also a variety of birds including Flesh-footed Shearwaters, Sooty... Terns, Red-tailed Tropic Birds, Masked Booby, Storm Petrels and Little Shearwaters. The Flesh-footed Shearwaters return to the island from August and depart in May. Neds Beach is a good location to watch the shearwaters in the late afternoon as they 'raft' at sea preparing to return to the island after feeding for the day. There a number of barbecues at Neds Beach as well as a shelter shed. Fishing is not permitted at Neds Beach as it is a sanctuary zone. : @genoladj #LordHoweIsland

17.01.2022 Cars are few. Bikes are plenty. The speed limit is 25km/hour. Most visitors ride bikes. Nobody needs a bike lock. Cycling is not just for the island’s visitors. Many locals make their way through each day on two wheels. Collecting their mail from the post office, buying their supplies, or heading two minutes down the road to work.... It's not uncommon to see a plastic milk crate tethered to a local’s bike for carting things around. Bikes are part of life on Lord Howe Island. They help keep the place pristine and they help visitors enjoy a unique holiday in a unique location. Visitors all ages, sizes, shapes and experience travel around on bikes. : elizabethallnuttphotographer @visitnsw @Australia See more

11.01.2022 Blackburn Island, or as it is locally known as Rabbit Island. Just 700 m offshore Rabbit Island is a prominent feature on the Lagoon. It’s an easy kayak or stand up paddleboard (or for the fitness gurus, a swim) to explore the small island and its surrounding snorkelling spots.... There are no marked walking trails, although there is a well-worn path you can follow to the summit to the yellow windsock; here you are treated to a 360-degree view and you can survey almost the entire lagoon! 11.01.2022 Thank you for coming to visit our island paradise. It was so lovely to see you all out here and we are so very glad you all had a fabulous time. 2020 has been incredibly hard for communities who depend on tourism. Obviously not everyone is able to travel at the moment but once it’s safe to do so let’s support our fellow Aussies by taking a holiday at home in Australia.com @visitlordhoweisland is one of the most sustainable destinations in the world with only a few hundred visitors allowed at any one time. This paradise is home to one of the most unique ecosystems in the world, but like many small communities, it relies on tourism. 10.01.2022 Protecting Paradise For over 100 years, Lord Howe has actively participated in environmental protection and conservation. Many of the conservation efforts we continue today are projects that were embarked upon by individuals or community groups who saw a need and actively worked toward a sustainable solution. The Lord Howe Island community's dedication to the preservation of our natural environment has been recognised through our World Heritage listing in 1982 & more recent...ly as the winner of the 30th Anniversary Gold Banksia Award for excellence in sustainability for the island’s holistic approach over more than a century. Lord Howe Island has been recognised as a flagship for sustainability, providing a model that can be shared by others. During the 2019 community survey, the natural environment was identified as the most valued aspect of life on Lord Howe, also ranking as the number one most important use of LHIB resources. Keeping Lord Howe safe from invasive pest species has been a long held priority for the Island and continues to be an important priority post the 2019 Rodent Eradication Project. The LHI Weed Eradication Program formally commenced on Monday 8th November 2004 with funding from the NSW environmental Trust. Track forward (mid point of a projected 30 year program) the island landscape has been significantly reduced in priority weeds. Today it is hard to imagine that weeds are an issue on LHI. The effort to Protect Paradise from Ground Asparagus continues with the 4th Heli-lance Spray Program with McDermott implemented Aug 2020 funded through the North Coast Local Land Services & Saving Our Species Over 600 weeds were detected across 14km. 06.01.2022 Balls Pyramid - Australia. The first reported European sighting of Balls Pyramid was in 1788 by Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, commander of the Armed Tender HM...S Supply (the oldest and smallest of the First Fleet ships), which was on its way from Botany Bay NSW with a cargo of nine male and six female convicts to found a penal settlement on Norfolk Island. On the return journey on the 13 March 1788, Ball observed Ball's Pyramid and sent a party ashore on Lord Howe Island to claim it as a British possession. Numerous turtles and tame birds were captured and returned to Sydney. Ball named Mount Lidgbird and Ball's Pyramid after himself and the main island after Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe, who was First Lord of the Admiralty at the time. The world’s tallest ocean stack is a dramatic triangular chunk of basalt rock sticking 550m out of the ocean 23km south of Lord Howe Island, it is the remains of a shield volcano millions of years old. Balls Pyramid is the sole remaining habitat of a species of giant stick insect that was pronounced extinct 80 years ago. Rediscovered in 2001, the Lord Howe Island Phasmid is said to be the rarest insect in the world, and possibly the rarest invertebrate.
