25.01.2022 BIG HITS AT BIG BASH TO SUPPORT BUSHFIRE RELIEF The Lord’s Taverners ACT has swung in behind Cricket ACT's fundraising efforts for Australians who have been imp...acted by bushfires in tomorrow night’s BBL match at Manuka Oval. For every six that either Sydney Thunder or Melbourne Renegades hit in the T20 match, the Lord’s Taverners ACT will donate $100 to Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery, and for every four which is scored, $25 will be donated. Several other partners of Cricket ACT have made the same fundraising commitments. The Lord’s Taverners ACT is pleased to be supporting this worthy cause, after the bushfires caused loss of life and horrific damage to Australian communities across the summer period.

23.01.2022 NEW BOOK PLAYING CRICKET IN SUPPORT OF MENTAL HEALTH A book has been released which tells the story of a Melbourne-based cricket enthusiast who played 11 matc...hes for 11 different clubs across Australia to help raise funds for and awareness of mental health. Craig Dodson, 42, travelled over 10,000km, pulling on the whites for a diverse mix of cricket clubs across the country. At one point, he travelled 1600km in a day only to score a golden duck! Craig, who was given a helping hand by retired Australian legends Greg Chappell and Darren Lehmann, made 75 runs at an average of 10.5 and took a few wickets. Craig was motivated to embark on this mission by his own battle with depression a decade ago and one of the major outcomes of his cricketing journey was $10,000 being raised for the Gotcha4Life Foundation, which funds education workshops, training programs and products to build the mental fitness of communities. The book, which is titled "A view of Australia from fine leg", gives a snapshot of the value of cricket in local communities and the role the sport plays promoting positive mental health. The foreword has been written by Darren Lehmann. To find out more, including how to order a copy: https://www.lordstavernersact.org.au/new-book-playing-cric/ Also, a copy will be one of the prizes in our raffle at Thursday night’s 2020 Lord’s Taverners ACT Annual General Meeting.

20.01.2022 BOOST FOR LOCAL YOUNG ATHLETES - Lord's Taverners ACT Media Release Another group of talented local young athletes has received a boost to their sporting career...s as recipients of Lord’s Taverners ACT Scholarships for 2020. It’s the 13th time that these annual scholarships, which are for local young athletes with a disability, have been awarded and recipients received between $300 and $1000 each to help them lift their already-impressive performances in their chosen sports. It’s very pleasing to be able to recognise and support the ‘class of 2020’ recipients of Lord’s Taverners ACT Scholarships, said Lord’s Taverners ACT President, Ric Smith. The funds received will help these local rising stars to purchase new equipment and travel to elite competitions, among other things, which will, hopefully, help them to reach even greater heights. The Lord’s Taverners ACT congratulates all of the young athletes who are recipients and we look forward to following their progress. The recipients of Lord’s Taverners ACT Scholarships in 2020 are: Louwanna Sheridan (14, basketball); Aeysha Williams (14, basketball); Monica De Salazar-Ballivian (12, basketball); Ari Gesini (17, athletics); Darcy Wilson (19, swimming); Gabrielle Waller (19, swimming); Amalie Leslie (14, athletics/snow-skiing/gymnastics); Arlindo Rodrigues (17, soccer); Christian Valeri (18, futsal); Madilyn Janssen (11, basketball); Hamish Sanz-Pellatt (16, softball/rugby league); and Paige Edwards (17, touch football/futsal). (ages shown above were at the time applications were received) In addition, an Award was given to Brandon Stroud to help with his efforts establishing powerchair soccer in the ACT. In total, the Lord’s Taverners ACT donated more than $7000 for this year’s scholarships program, which was raised through membership subscriptions and regular sporting-themed dinners, breakfasts and other events convened by the Lord’s Taverners ACT. If you are interested in supporting the work of the Lord’s Taverners which includes the scholarships program by becoming a member, please visit our website where you can join online, Mr Smith said. As we are the middle of a global pandemic, fundraising is extremely challenging, so we would welcome any additional support. The Lord’s Taverners ACT again thanks Mrs Gail Farr for assisting with this year’s program, as she has done for many years.

15.01.2022 It's difficult to put into words the true impact of the loss of former Australian champion Dean Jones AM. Swashbuckling batsman, lightning runner between the wi...ckets, sharp fielder, great thinker/commentator, cricket lover, proud Victorian. One of the best no. 3 batsmen of all time who was ahead of his time in one-day internationals. Around the world the game of cricket is much poorer for his loss. Our thoughts are with his family.

14.01.2022 SUCCESSFUL WOMEN’S CRICKET CHARITY BREAKFAST More than 100 local cricket enthusiasts and charity supporters attended another showcase for international women’s ...cricket, the 2020 Lord’s Taverners ACT Women’s Cricket Breakfast. The event, which was held at the National Press Club of Australia on 27 February, served as an excellent entrée to the Australia-Bangladesh Women’s T20 World Cup match which was played at Manuka Oval on the same day as the breakfast. After being welcomed by Mr Andrew Barr ACT Chief Minister, guests were treated to two insightful panel discussions. The first involved High Performance Manager Women’s Cricket (and former Australian player) Leah Poulton and high-profile commentator Mel Jones OAM, who is also a board member of Cricket Australia. The second panel session focused on the evening’s T20 World Cup match and featured players Delissa Kimmince and Erin Burns, together with Australian coach, Matthew Mott. The discussion and debate was moderated (in style) by now-retired local media personality and sports nut, Phil Lynch. There were a number of other highlights which occurred at this major charity event, notably the attendance of the Patron of the Lord’s Taverners Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), Governor-General of Australia, and Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley. On the day, Mrs Hurley donated a special Government House ornament to be auctioned with funds raised by this supporting the work of the Lord's Taverners Australia. The successful bidder was Bruce Calder. Fundraising was also bolstered by a raffle and silent auction. Prize-winners/successful bidders included the following. Asoka Wijeratne: Antique desk Louis XI-style parquetry-fronted cherrywood fall-front secretaire on slender cabriole legs with gilt bronze fittings (made in France in the mid-20th century), courtesy of Fox Antiques. Murray Radcliffe: Golf with global professional Brendan Jones Canberra’s global professional Brendan Jones will lead a group of four (including Brendan) in a round at Royal Canberra Golf Club. Cindie Deeker: Hospitality at the Brumbies Four tickets to a Brumbies Rugby match, including seats in the Sports Lounge, buffet-style catering and two drink vouchers per person. Hamish Arthur: Dinner for two to the value of $200 at REBEL REBEL in New Acton. In addition, a door prize of a double pass to the Matisse & Picasso exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, also courtesy of Fox Antiques, was won by Diane Valli. The Lord’s Taverners ACT appreciated the speakers, the master of ceremonies, members and guests who gave up their time to attend. The Lord’s Taverners also acknowledges the support of event partner, Cricket ACT and all who donated prizes for the raffle and silent auction. The breakfast raised more than $5000 for the Lord’s Taverners ACT and Cricket ACT. Of this, the Lord’s Taverners ACT received $3444, with these funds going towards the work the Lord’s Taverners does supporting local young and disadvantaged cricketers and other athletes.

13.01.2022 MESSAGE FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF THE LORD’S TAVERNERS ACT The hard-working committee of the Lord’s Taverners ACT has been thinking carefully about what the co...ronavirus pandemic may mean for the Lord’s Taverners in Canberra and the region. You are our biggest supporters and we couldn’t continue to back local young and disadvantaged cricketers and other athletes without your membership and donations. We are therefore keen to let you know that we aren’t planning on going away we are merely entering a quieter phase because of the coronavirus. We had considered holding our Degustation and Winemakers Dinner in May or June, but this is not going to be possible. If social distancing rules are lifted, then we would like to hold another dinner before Christmas either our dinner alongside the PM’s XI Match or the Degustation and Winemakers Dinner (with the timing of the PM’s XI Match, if it is to be held, being the pivot date). The Lord’s Taverners ACT has also been giving thought to holding new kinds of events which, potentially, should have a wider appeal. But this will certainly not diminish the importance of our traditional events, for which you have given us wonderful support over many years. In the meantime, the financial year 2020/21 promises to be a challenging one for us as we respond to the needs of the communities we support. So we hope you will be able to renew your membership early in the new financial year and that you might also be able to encourage friends to join us as new members. During this down time, we will endeavour to keep in touch with you through communication like this. Also, our website (www.lordstavernersact.org.au) and our social media channels are updated on a regular basis, so I would encourage you to access them, if you haven’t already done so. Thank you again for your ongoing support it’s greatly appreciated. Most of all, from my family to yours, please stay healthy and safe. Regards, Ric Smith President

06.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM OUT HONORARY PLAYING CAPTAIN, TRENT COPELAND Hi everyone, hope all of you have survived the COVID-world we’ve all lived in this past eight or so ...months. It certainly has changed the way we live - but hopefully in turn made us incredibly grateful for the things we do have, and to hone in on those. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support. As far as the summer is concerned, we are just finishing up the Sheffield Shield ‘bubble’ in Adelaide where we’ve had some great results, including an unbelievable win against QLD. Next up for me it’s SEVEN coverage of the WBBL, Test matches against India - where I will be on the touchscreen again - and some BBL commentary. On top of all of that, Kim and I are expecting our first child at the end of this month! Exciting times. Stay safe, enjoy the summer, and go the Aussies (and Blues!).
