25.01.2022 These boys are from St. Aloysius College, which was a small boys’ primary school attached to Loreto Convent Portland. It opened in 1906 in the adjoining ‘Seavie...w Cottage’. There was a matron to look after the boys - their meals, dressing, taking them to the beach etc. The first one was an English woman, Miss Foster. There was also a Sister in charge, probably most memorable, Mother Columbanus Croughan. For some memories of the students’ time at Portland and some famous names who went there, you might like to read Mother Brigid Jones’ history of Portland: https://www.loreto.org.au//Not-Counting-the-Cost-by-M-Brig

24.01.2022 St. Patrick’s Day was a welcome relief from the Lenten restrictions. This day was a day to celebrate the Irish nuns who had come to Australia, often never havin...g the opportunity to return to Ireland. Irish music and dancing honoured these women. Lucy Kerley, a Loreto student in the 1920s, remembered St. Patrick’s Day as a particularly happy day. We always had a holiday and wore little green ribbons, and after Mass we were greeted by the strains of various Irish melodies played by a string quartet and piano firstly in St. Joseph’s parlour and then on the landing outside the refectory. I used to love this, especially when they played the Irish Washerwomen. I felt I wanted to dance and sing. (Lucy Kerley’s Memoirs)

11.01.2022 St. Joseph’s Parish Primary school was opened in Ballarat in March 1877. The Loreto Sisters always had what was called a ‘poor’ school in Ireland associated wi...th their schools. St. Joseph’s was the earliest parish primary school in Australia to be administered by the Sisters. In our archival collection we have a delightful set of portraits of St. Joseph’s pupils from the 1880s. Here pictured (L-R): Joseph O'Connor, Annie Burke, Charlotte Hickie.
