25.01.2022 Breastfeeding apps.............friend or foe? If you are using a breastfeeding app, make sure you are focussing on your baby as well. Your baby does not know about schedules or apps. Your baby may be telling you something different..........learn from them. If you find, when using an app, it is taking lots of time to track and record then ease off, miss a few days. ... I believe the only thing to count is poo and wee and weight. If theres is enough poo and wee then Bub is going great! Let me know in the comments what app you like the best:-)

25.01.2022 The temperature is rising here in Brisbane ! If you are breastfeeding a little one in the heat here are my tips: 1. Have a fan on you both while feeding, make sure it is oscillating and moving the air around (AC if you have it) 2. Your baby doesn't care if you're sweaty - they love you anyway! 3. Mum's, drink plenty of water... 4. Your exclusively breastfed baby does not need water - there is plenty in your breastmilk (80% is water!) 5. Your baby may breastfeed more often - just go with shorter, more frequent feeds if they demand this. It will settle back to normal when the temperature cools. Call/text me if you need more help

21.01.2022 Hello all, just thought Id share with you a story......I visited a beautiful lady a few weeks ago, her baby was 8 days old and she had terribly damaged and painful nipples. She was breastfeeding, expressing, giving formula (which started in hospital) and going crazy with this routine. I was able to help with her latch which meant NO PAIN, then gave her a feed plan to follow to remove formula. Now at 2 weeks she is fully breastfeeding, has no pain and loving it!... If you want to check out the feed plan I gave this lovely lady click on the image below and get started! Or call me to chat about your breastfeeding picture

14.01.2022 Covid-19 Vaccination and Lactation information from the Breastfeeding Medicine Journal 2021. Great information.

14.01.2022 I've had a few worried mothers calling this week, mostly about latching. Issues such as: * baby falling off * clicking while feeding ... * constantly having to hold the breast while baby feeding Generally these issues are happening in the first few weeks and are frustrating for everyone! It's most likely because you are lifting your breast to your baby's mouth and then latching. You see, when you lift your breast you will also need to let your breast go. The breast will then fall and your baby will slip off. So, here's my solution: 1. Hold you baby close to you and line up their mouth to your nipple without moving your breast. 2. See if your baby will latch by themselves. 3. If they latch and keep sucking then you are good! 4. If no latch then you can shape your breast (without lifting your breast) and hold the shape for a few minutes until bub is sucking well then slowly let go. Done! You can read more at my Latching blog or give me call and I can guide you through it :-)

13.01.2022 Do you hear the word "colic" being thrown around? A baby that is crying lots, generally for more than 3 hours is labelled as having "colic" So what do you do? You are not given treatment just patted on the shoulder and sent on your way. ... So's here are some tips: Knowing that crying is expected helps. A baby generally has one unsettled period each 24 hours and this can last 4-6 hours (or more at times) or one feed to the next. This period is usually in the night in the first 2 weeks then changes to the evening. My best tips for this time are: 1. Don't worry - make sure your baby is pooing and weeing as normal and there is no fever or behaviour out of the ordinary (if there is contact your GP or 13HEALTH) 2. Next have your strategies ready. These include: a. feeding b. wrapping, patting, rocking c. bathing (just once a day) d. finger sucking to sooth (doing this prior to going back on the breast can really help calm your baby to feed again e. then back to the top of the list again. (if you have more tips post in comments. 3. Make sure you always go back to feeding as as your baby cries for a long period they will become hungry again. Don't hold off the feed because you think they have 'wind', you won't make the situation worse by feeding. They may have wind from crying lots but a feed will push this through and help relieve the pain. You can give me a call to discuss your baby's crying periods and see if we can create a plan to get you through these times. Another resource to really understand what crying means in a newborn is the information on the Period of Purple Crying, click the link below to have a read.

12.01.2022 I have seen a few mothers with blocked ducts lately and thought I'd share my tips. Blocked ducts are pretty common but can be very worrying if they hang around and don't clear, despite all your efforts. So here are a few pointers for you:... 1. Don't worry about your milk supply, it may decrease in this time but you can always get it back to what it was when the blocked duct resolves. 2. Blocked ducts can hang around for a few days before clearing. You need to consistently work on it with heat, massage and feeding/pumping (See my link below for all the tips on what to do) 3. Keep an eye on signs of mastitis such as a red breast, painful to feed, fever and feel like you have the flu, it's best to see your GP for possible diagnosis of mastitis. (Don't worry if you get mastitis, it is treatable and you will get back on track in about a week!) Or give me a call!

11.01.2022 Worried your baby is not getting enough milk? Is your baby is not gaining weight or gaining slowly? My best advice is to monitor poo and wee! If not getting back on track, or have any question whatsoever dont hesitate! Give me a call (or text me) at 0414 403 208.

07.01.2022 OMG..........this is a big topic when it comes to being parents. Please, please, please don't compare yourself to others. Train yourself to stay focussed on the here and now. You can do this through: * breathing... * meditation * reading a book - try The Power of Now or something inspirational to you * talk a walk in nature * turn off your phone for periods of the day Removing comparison from your life takes time. 06.01.2022 Let's all be real!

05.01.2022 Does your baby vomit, are you worried?! I saw a mother the other day whose baby was vomiting about a small handful after most feeds. She was concerned. So I asked her a few questions: 1. Is your baby putting on weight? - If your baby is gaining weight then vomiting is more overspilling and not causing weight loss. This is a good sign.... 2. Do you think your baby is in pain before or after vomiting? If bub is crying and upset with vomiting then good to get a check over with GP. Vomiting does not mean your baby has reflux and needs treatment, however, it is good to get bub checked by GP if you are worried. Just look at the whole picture, if baby is happy, gaining weight and poo's and wee's in the normal limits then we label these babies as "happy chuckers". If there is more symptoms then best to get vomiting checked. If you're unsure give me a call and we can work out a plan together :-)

05.01.2022 I love this.............but just remember, if you happen to be sleeping and miss those early feeding cues, don't worry! Cuddle your baby to calm and head to the breast
