22.01.2022 We have scanned some of dads 35mm negatives and this is only the first sheet of hundreds of jewels! He shot these fab shots of Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in 1948 with his beloved rangefinder Carl Zeiss Contax II. This exceptional camera would set you back nearly $300 USD. Dad worked hard in Buehlers camera store in the city to save up the money. He sold the same camera a few years later only to regret it bitterly and buy back not one but THREE later in his life. ... The Kodak Panchromatic Panatomic X 35mm film was only 35 ASA/ISO back in those days so it was incredibly difficult to freeze the action on moving subjects even in full sun. Plus, an SLR camera was not even invented so framing was also tricky under those circumstances. He did a great job though, as only dad would have done. He would be delighted to see them digitalised in their glory like this today.

20.01.2022 This is how we edited movies in 1979. Yards of real film movies, not a digital file buried somewhere on an iPhone that may never be backed up or hidden away on an SD card that could go bung in a few years time. My sister and I spent many a Sunday afternoon editing our dad's Super 8 and Standard 8 gauge film movies. Editing film was a true hands on job of "cutting and splicing" sections of film with special German made glue. Sometimes dad would "stripe" them which meant a... soundtrack of some loud cliched classical music could be added. When we wanted to be really fancy we would add a few seconds of colourful visual titles which we had filmed outside in the full sun and cut and spliced in to the action. Playing the movies in reverse for a short time was always good for a laugh, especially during the bits we were diving into the swimming pool or running a race on our front lawn. After all the work was done we would settle down in our PJs and spend an exciting Saturday night watching them until we fell asleep. It certainly was endless family entertainment before the video tape was invented. Have you got some old film movies tucked away in a box somewhere? 15.01.2022 On this day 17 years ago our hearts broke when our dad, Jack Lorimer, left us peacefully at home. As a tribute to dad I revisited his huge collection of slides and (re)scanned what I consider to be one of his best shots. He called it Sentry and Photographer, Buckingham Palace, London, June 1957. There is so much meaning going on in this shot and I love how it is out of its time in so many ways. The young girl looks so smartly dressed and I think she is shooting with ...some sort of 120 roll film box camera. Today her camera would be an iPhone and she would most likely be featuring in the photo alongside the guard. This is a Kodachrome transparency taken during dads years in London. He fastidiously numbered his slides and included information about location and sometimes his precise camera settings. The photo (number 969 of the few thousand he took) is now 61 years old yet it looks so clear and sharp. Such is the power of film and esp the look of the legend that is Kodachrome.
