20.01.2022 Oy Mama Gevalt, at Chapel off Chapel, as reviewed by Alex First Two 90-year-olds both Holocaust survivors, one now died and other not go at it and at it and at it. One says to the other and he responds No, it is not the set up to a joke.... Well, it is, but rather than a single joke, it is the premise of a new play from Jack Felman about a Jewish wife and husband, Mania and Velvel Pszeszekowski. Having brought up four children, she has passed on in fact, did so five years ago and he is about to join her. In the intervening period, while he has been of this earth, he has continued to speak with her at least imagine what she would be saying to him and vice versa. He has been celebrating his 90th birthday at a pizza joint, when disaster strikes. She already has wings. In other words, she is an angel, but like all newcomers to the hereafter, he will be judged in an angel court to determine whether he is worthy of entering the pearly gates. That involves the prosecution and defense putting alternative versions of the value of his earthly deeds. We the audience witness a number of episodes from their lives together in their infinite glory. One thing is certain, through more than 60 years of marriage and beyond the kvetching (nagging) has been nothing if not consistent. At one stage, Mania and Velvel even sought the services of a marriage guidance counsellor, as if that was ever going to do any good. The mirth comes thick and fast. Oy Mama Gevalt, which runs for a couple of hours, including interval, is rapid-paced, entertaining and laugh-inducing throughout. Many of the jokes are oldies but goodies, however there is also plenty of fresh material. The play has been wonderfully conceived and executed. I was particularly taken by the wit and delivery of Felman as Velvel (and in a most memorable solo routine in his guise as an aunt). In fact, all three players the others being Lena Fiszman as the irrepressible Mania and Allen Brostek, who plays the pizza man, a rabbi, the legal eagles and the therapist fill multiple roles. For Jews and South Africans in the theatre, the familiarity of the stereotypes that form the backbone of the play is particularly endearing. While staging is kept to a minimum, the simple props used do the trick very nicely. Over the past 25 years this troupe known as Los Trios Amigos has brought us four (and now five) plays that explored the life of the Pszeszekowski family. An excellent free colour program, which includes valuable background on the show and the history of Los Trios Amigos, as well as a glossary of Yiddish terms, that add joy to the production, comes with admission. Directed by Eli Erez, Oy Mama Gevalt has a great deal going for it. It is playing at Chapel off Chapel until 12th August, 2018.
