25.01.2022 a very kind gesture from MARIE MULCAHY MUMFORD - I have this cup ... if there is someone that has the saucer & needs the cup I'm happy to part with it ... It is a little beauty and needs to be with its saucer... I don't want anything for it - (thank you for your generosity Marie, it sure is a little beauty and we hope the cup soon finds a mate - cheers LN)
24.01.2022 late 1800s - lithograph of scenes of Narrandera. Lithograph is a style of printing that makes use of the immiscibility of grease and water. In the lithographic process, ink is applied to a grease-treated image cut into the flat printing surface of stone or metal (this Narrandera lithograph is undated - prob. late 1800s) *view on Fullscreen
23.01.2022 THE "P.S. MURRUMBIDGEE" - Originally a stern wheeler, she was changed to a side wheeler paddlesteamer about 1870, so she could operate in low water conditions delivering cargo for the squatters and towns. The vessel was built at Echuca on the Murray River in 1865 and had a length of 25.35 metres and a beam of 5.05 metres. A semi portable 2-cylinder engine powered the vessel. Although docked at Echuca, the "PS Murrumbidgee", worked regularly up and down the Murrumbidgee River..., servicing many towns, including Narrandera. Capt. Tom Bynon, Narrandera's most famous riverboat skipper was in charge of the "PS Murrumbidgee" for a short time In the late 1880's she operated as a general wool trader, then a salvage vessel, complete with diver, used for raising of vessels stranded as far up the Darling River as Bourke. By 1891 John Egge one of the biggest traders on the river reconstructed PS Murrumbidgee as a floating department store with mahogany showcases and polished counters with grocery and hardware departments. In 1920's Murrumbidgee was used to transport pine posts to the fruit blockers at Red Cliffs and later in the haulage of red gum sleepers. The "PS Murrumbidgee was actually seized by the government for the duration of the war for a few years before being recommissioned in 1947 with accommodation for 17 passengers. In 1948 while cruising upstream from the Goulburn River junction (Victoria) a fire broke out. Captain Hogg steered the fully blazing vessel into the bank and all aboard were safely evacuated. Set adrift she ran aground on a sandbar, burning to the water line. A spark from the funnel caused the blaze. This was the end of the famous "PS Murrumbidgee"

10.01.2022 MIDGEON WOOLSHED - Lake Midgeon Station, Narrandera The "Narrandera run" was changed to "Lake Midgeon" and in 1895 the woolshed was built. The conventional ‘T’ shaped plan was adopted and 42 stalls for shearers formed part of the central board. Due to the dimensions of the building, the hipped roof over the central board has ‘cathedral’ type proportions. The woolshed is constructed with timber framing and corrugated cladding/roofing. The woolshed, 10km North East of Narrandera, is significant as it exhibits a rare intact example and detailing of late 19th century woolshed when wool production was important to Australia’s development. With significant ties from a bygone era, Lake Midgeon woolshed is rich in Australian pastoral history
09.01.2022 when the night spreads over Narrandera ...
07.01.2022 we've heard the 1953 story how a tiger was "released" into the streets of Narrandera by disgruntled circus workers. The tiger found its way into a child's bedroom and things got a bit crazy. The story went around the world and here is an Italian magazine report of the 1953 incident (along with translation) 3 pics
07.01.2022 Around Ardlethan, NSW. This area of the Riverina was known as Warri when the first Europeans established their pastoral stations here, in the 1800s. By the tim...e the village was gazetted in 1908, there were already a number of businesses established in the area of the London Hotel. The railway came through in November 1908, attracting more people to the village, which by now had sold the town land lots by auction. Tin mining began in 1912, which along with agriculture, became the economic backbone of the town. Many more shops were established, schools and churches built, and public institutions established. Over the years, fortunes changed, the population declined, and some businesses closed or downsized, but today, the town remains an interesting place to stop for a break, have a look around, visit the shops and support the community. 06.01.2022 the steamer "P.S. MURRUMBIDGEE" was the last to leave the Murrumbidgee River. Here is the photo of the "PS Murrumbidgee" travelling under the Maude weir for the last time after the weir was completed. They had to raise the weir gates as high as possible and wait for a rise in the river so that she could pass straight through - (pic and text from our mate Mal Kulper, the admin for the FB page MEMORIES of DARLINGTON POINT check it out here > https://www.facebook.com/groups/memoriesofdarlingtonpoint/

01.01.2022 from VANITA CLARK - hi, thought Lost Narrandera might like these photos of Match Box holders from Narrandera Taxi Service circa 1940. The service ran in the 1930's up to sometime in 1950's we believe. Some one might recall better than us though. It was my husbands grandfather, George Rose and his mother Edna Clark (Rose) drove them as well (thanks for sharing these great items of Narrandera's past, Vanita - LN)
