24.01.2022 Is there anyone old enough here who remembers the overnight train from Melbourne to Mildura? In the 1960's and before. I'm trying to recall where it stopped, s...ome time after midnight as it travelled north, and passengers had time to jump out and buy a pie from a little cabin near the tracks. They were Volk pies, I'm sure, and excellent. But what was the name of the one-horse place it stopped at? I'd love to know. See more

22.01.2022 Its been 25 years ago today since my wonderful grandfather, George Oliver, died. So I thought I would share some of his early photos of when he came to Irymple... to work for Victor and Mary Roberts at their property "Nardoo" in the mid 1920's. He then bought the property from Mary in the 1940's following Victor's death. My parents bought the property from my Grandparents and still enjoy living there. See more

22.01.2022 Relle Lee's scanning of the 1941 'local' phonebook yields 11 more pages: Mildura through to Red Cliffs and Renmark (and all the little towns) in the alphabetical listing. What a productive project this has been! Have fun poring through the family names and the businesses from almost 80 years ago. Please comment - and share - if you find something good.

21.01.2022 This photo from Nicole Fraser shows the vehicle used for the mail run from Meringur to Mildura and back. Her nana (Roma Fraser) wrote some notes on the back of the envelope. The mail must get through!

20.01.2022 These charming Meringur photos and accompanying caption come from Nicole Fraser: Family names in the photo include Perry, Harmer and Barrett. Queen Carnivals were used for fundraisers, including between the two World Wars.

19.01.2022 This very small (and warped) photograph comes from the Bruce McLean collection, with no background information. Some of you may be able to shed some light on the aircraft.... which might help explain when and where this might be.

19.01.2022 'White Cliffs, Mildura.' Circa 1945-1954 A peaceful Sunday morning photograph from the State Library of Victoria (Victorian Railways) collection. Whilst White Cliffs is the earlier name of Merbein, I have a a feeling this photograph is closer to Red Cliffs!

16.01.2022 'Start of clearing irrigation settlement at Mildura.' These two photos come from Peter Wilson, grandson of W H Wilson, owner of the early Mildura business "Wilson's Busy Corner" featured a couple of days ago in a post. His grandfather's photos were taken by photographer - J.W. Fowler.

14.01.2022 Two photos freshly scanned from the Bruce McLean collection: these show what seems to be a pharmacist and his staff in Mildura in the early 1950s. Can you help solve the question as to his/their identity?

10.01.2022 'Max Binger, Belinda Binger and Mandy Binger - planting trees before the opening of St Paul’s School, Mildura, 1974.' Photo courtesy of Mandy Binger. 09.01.2022 This Fourteenth Street, Mildura image would presumably originate from the Country Roads Board archives. The CRB became the Road Construction Authority in the 1980s, and by the end of that decade the Road Corporation, subsequently operating as VicRoads.

09.01.2022 Veronica Antcliff asks: 'Does anybody know who the three young people on the left of this late 1940s photo are? They are probably from Merbein. The two on the right are Allan Antcliff and Freda Lowe.'

09.01.2022 'New Mildura Base Hospital' 1934. Morgan Davies Series Postcard, State Library of Victoria.

08.01.2022 During this week the Australian Army WW2 service record for Neil James Noyce (Mildura) became available online after being digitised. The National Archives Australia is gradually digitising their collection, and their website is https://www.naa.gov.au/ His Army identification photo is shown here, part of the 61 pages in his file. Almost all WW1 records are on there as well as millions of other items. Neil Noyce, husband of Flora - passed away on the 17th October 2010, a day... after his 90th birthday, and was certainly a significant person in Mildura's history. Here is part of an obituary from the March 2011 Newsletter of the Mildura and District Genealogical Society, (Excerpts taken from Sunraysia Daily 22/10/2010 and the eulogy written by Neil's daughter Glenda): 'Born and raised in Mildura, Neil was well-known as a talented builder, the head of a leading construction firm, and a veteran of active service in World War II. As a Mildura councillor for 15 years, he enjoyed three terms as Mildura's mayor and was heavily involved in establishing the Mildura RSL, as well as the building of the Mildura Arts Centre. For his lifetime of accomplishments and a city standing as proof of his influence, friend Henry Tankard called Mr Noyce a visionary with a commitment to making things happen. He was a man of strength and integrity, not dissuaded by controversy. He was an outstanding citizen of Sunraysia. See more

06.01.2022 Six pages from a 1941 Telephone book, kindly scanned by Relle Lee, covering telephone subscribers from Bambill through to the beginning of the Mildura listings. (More pages to come). The booklet covers the Irymple-Mildura-Ouyen Districts and all the towns within. Imagine having a single digit phone number! Can you see any family numbers listed?

05.01.2022 This charming Meringur photo and accompanying caption comes from Nicole Fraser: Family names in the photo include Perry, Harmer and Barrett. Queen Carnivals were used for fundraisers, including between the two World Wars.

05.01.2022 Three highland dancing photos from the Bruce McLean collection - surely someone will recall participation in these events and the locations?

03.01.2022 A golfing group circa 1935-36 - likely to be at the Meringur Golf Club - provided by Nicole Fraser from a family album. The book 'Millewa - The First 50Years' - has this entry for the Meringur Golf Club: 'The golf club was situated alongside the old football oval and was active in the pre-war years. Among those who played golf were Seabrooks, Dentons, Regattis, Pallman, Ruchels and McDonalds. The Opening Day was June 7, 1930.'

01.01.2022 'Mildura High School - Technical Class 1.' This school photo (with names) is kindly shared by Elwynne Wentworth. Technical training was available in secondary schools, as described in this 1939 article, which mentions Mildura. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/206759624
