14.01.2022 We have a lot of opportunities for people with an Acquired Brain Injury/Brain Disorder and also carers to be involved in our 2016 project called Lotus Wisdom Sharing funded by City of Melbourne. Lotus Group (based in Ross House central Melbourne) is supported by Brainlink Services and we will be sharing information about Brainlink at all our Lotus Wisdom Sharing information sessions and also at a main event December 2nd 2016 in Central Melbourne. The Lord Mayor or his repres...entative along with City of Melbourne staff will attend this community event which will coincide with International Day of Disability on Dec 3rd As part of this project we hope to involve some carers who are refugees/migrants to share their stories. We are looking for carers interested in sharing their personal story about the differences for carers between their country of origin and here in Australia. This will be done via four sessions with presentations and carer personal stories in a small information booklet launched at the December 2nd event. The Information sessions, booklet and the December event will also include personal stories from people with ABI/Brain Disorders -always important for raising community awareness We are also looking for some affordable or donated entertainment for the Dec 2 event. We are planning to have some information tables at the Dec 2 event so a variety of groups who support people with disabilities can promote their groups and we will also offer Lotus Group fundraising items for sale. Hope to hear from you if you or someone you know might be interested in supporting or participating in our Lotus Wisdom Sharing project in the following roles: personal "ABI/brain disorder" presenter carer story presenter helping organise sessions, planning meetings and the main event December 2nd staffing an information table/packing information bags for sessions and the main event setting up/packing up sessions and meetings attending as part of the audience as that also helps raise awareness about ABI or brain disorders entertaining at the Dec 2 event Helping format the Lotus Wisdom Sharing book ready for printing -Lyn needs help!!! Covering printing costs for the Lotus Wisdom Sharing booklet -if you are a company or organisation we can promote you and your logo subject to Brainlink approval We hope to see some new faces at our future planning meetings and sessions Inquiries: Lyn Macdonald Phone 0413239236 Email [email protected]

10.01.2022 Everybody craves the embrace of a loving parent from time to time. A warm hug, a tender word or two. But as Marlene reveals in an exclusive interview with Brain...Link, shes had to take on the role of mother for her two grandchildren following a heart breaking event which changed four lives forever. The hardest thing for Marlene sometimes is the realisation, in many ways, shes taken her daughters place in life. Back in 2000, she thought her daughter had overcome a drug overdose. There is still a lot of doubt about how it actually happened, Marlene says. After a spell in hospital and then rehab, Marlene had convinced herself the worst was over. Then all of a sudden, virtually overnight she was totally different, she remembers. They said she had a stroke. Her speech changed, she couldnt speak properly, her left side was starting to be very weak and distorted. Just as quickly, Marlene had inadvertently become the mother of her daughters two children who were both approaching their teenage years. While time and energy doesnt allow Marlene to care for her full time, shes done the next best thing for her now 41-year-old daughter. Ive raised her kids for her instead, she says. The biggest challenge for me... is when theyre having 18ths and 21st and dramas at school, thats been a big thing. She misses her kids. Even though she cant show a lot of emotion anymore, if you look into her eyes you can see that shes missing her kids. Her voice begins to break with emotion as she reveals the difficulties the children, now 22 and 23, have experienced. Its been hard on the kids, she says. Theyve missed out on a lot with their mum, they get a bit upset about it. She cant speak very much. She hugs them when theyre around, she hugs them all the time. Luckily BrainLink, who have been on the scene offering guidance from pretty much the start. They found her accommodation after it had been initially suggested, post-rehab, she would be moved to a nursing home. That was totally inappropriate, Marlene says. The links that BrainLink had, got her out of the nursing home. Theyre all roughly the same age with varying disabilities and they all get along pretty well. Thats when BrainLinks been good, even if they dont have anything planned you can still ring them up and talk to them. Theyre a great help for taking your mind off all the dramas. She says the past 14 years has taught her plenty. Ive probably become a lot more patient, she says. Caring for my daughter is a slow thing. For instance if I tried to get her to walk around the hallway here, it takes forever. I can do it in two seconds but for her it takes her ten minutes. You have to look out for things you wouldnt normally look out for. To make sure pathways are clear, theres nothing for her to trip over. If it was a child doing something naughty youd growl at them, but you cant with somebody with a stroke, you have to speak to them differently. Otherwise you can frighten them a bit, you can see the fear in their face if you raise your voice.
