For the last ten years, I have dedicated myself to learning all that I can about chronic pain and how to manage and overcome it. ... 11.01.2022 Did you know that Myofascial trigger points are a common cause of pain and dysfunction in the human body? Trigger points can occur in muscles, tendons and fascia due to sudden unexpected movement, holding prolonged positions (eg sitting at a desk all day), postural dysfunction, as a consequence of injury or illness, or as a result of vitamin deficiency, sleep deprivation or joint dysfunction (for example osteo-arthritis). Trigger points can produce a range of symptoms includ...ing pain, stiffness and loss of range of motion in the arms, legs, spine, torso, hands and feet, headaches, tinnitus, mood disturbance, anxiety, dizziness, nausea, heartburn and fibromyalgia. Left untreated, the symptoms arising from trigger points generally worsen over time and may result in the formation of additional trigger points throughout the body. Trigger points need to be released directly using special techniques; routine massage, chiropractic treatment, osteopathy or physiotherapy may provide short term symptomatic relief but will not address the cause of your pain and dysfunction. Rebecca is always inspired by the results she can achieve for her clients by deactivating and resolving their trigger points. Many of them tell her they have seen doctors, physios, osteos and chiros for their pain but "nothing has worked" ~ until they come in to Lotus and have their trigger points released, removing the root cause of their pain and dysfunction. 06.01.2022 Hi everyone, Rebecca here. Too often, people believe that massage needs to be painful in order to be effective, and question the benefits of a more gentle approach. In fact, working too deeply too quickly triggers the body's protective mechanisms, and the body responds by bracing to protect itself against further onslaught. At the same time, it will release endorphins, so that people who experience overly firm massage may (temporarily) feel better - until they realise that t...he underlying condition has not improved. In contrast, a gentle and gradual approach, and one which invites the body to soften and release rather than attempting to forcefully overcome barriers, will have deep, long lasting effects and produce ongoing positive changes within the body and the mind. You still get the endorphins, plus a nice boost of oxytocin as well, as this is the body's natural response to gentle therapeutic touch. 03.01.2022 Are you experiencing pain, restriction of movement, general feelings of fatigue, wandering aching sensations that seem to travel about the body, or are you looking to release trauma from all layers of your being? Myofascial release might be just what you need. Fascia is a web of connective tissue that runs throughout the body from head to the toe, wrapping around your organs, muscles, blood vessels and glands. When healthy, fascia helps create a mobile, flexible and resilien...t body. However, poor posture, repetitive motions, trauma, stress and inflammation can lead to restrictions in the fascia, placing undesirable pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels and bones. These restrictions then create aches and pains, muscle fatigue and tension. They can limit your movement, distort your posture, drain your energy and lead to dysfunctional compensation patterns in the body, including using muscles for actions they are not designed for. There is also a growing body of research confirming that stress, emotions and trauma (physical, mental or emotional) can be stored in the fascia, particularly in situations where the body is forced into fight or flight mode. This stress can be held in the body for many years, creating a variety of physical, mental and emotional symptoms and often, extensive testing fails to find the cause of pain and dysfunction. Myofascial release is a gentle technique involving the sustained application of light to moderate pressure in areas of fascial restriction. 02.01.2022 It's easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of Christmas and lose sight of what really matters. If you are feeling stressed or pressured by having to do it all, please take a few moments out to breathe, feel into your body, let go of the tension and remember that the presence you bring to each occasion is all that really matters. We have compiled a few suggestions to help you incorporate self care into Christmas this year and stay healthy, sane and balanced over the silly se...ason - please feel free to add your own in the comments. 1. Stay hydrated! That way, if you do happen to over-indulge, your body will be able to return to balance much more easily. 2. Keep moving - find ways to incorporate regular gentle exercise into your days, even if your exercise regime goes out the window. Try a walk out in nature or around your area to take in the Christmas lights, head down to the beach for a swim, give yourself the gift of a gentle yoga practice or whatever else works for you. This will help to keep your mind clear, your blood flowing and your energy moving. 3. Ensure you get adequate sleep. 4. Listen to your body - rest, breathe, take a break when you need to. You don't have to do everything or be everything to all people. Don't neglect your own needs or your own health and wellbeing, especially at this time of the year. 5. Prioritise! Accept that you can't do everything, so work out what really matters and focus on that. 6. Set appropriate boundaries - with work, with family, with friends. Make sure you have time and energy for the things you really want to do, rather than simply serving everyone else's needs. 7. Remember that your presence is the greatest gift you can ever give. In the words of Maya Angelou, 'people may forget what you say, people may forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel'
