25.01.2022 Two little people getting an education. Big brother reads all about breastfeeding to his baby sister.

25.01.2022 Very few medications require you to stop or interrupt breastfeeding. There is rarely no alternate medication available if one wasn’t optimal. Good read here by Dr Newman

24.01.2022 It’s going to get harder to find good face to face breastfeeding help over the coming weeks. Don’t struggle through alone. Reach out. You’ll be surprised what we can achieve by distance. Call, text or email to discuss and book.

23.01.2022 I haven’t pumped in about 6 months. This little one remembers. She picked up this pump piece and knew exactly what it was for. It amazes me how much she understands about her body already.

23.01.2022 Try and catch this chat. See what breastfeeding in hospital is all about.

20.01.2022 This little one was born at home in water after a completely physiological labour and birth. She was uninterrupted in her time on mums chest and spent well over half an hour in the pool until everyone was ready to move. Her umbilical cord was short and the water level was quite high so latching in the pool was a bit difficult, she wasn’t fussed, she was taking in the new world. Her family, her two mammas and her three brothers were taking her in just the same. ... The placenta was birthed as mum stepped out of the pool and she was released from her birth mamma for the first time and put on the chest of her other mamma. Soon returning to her birth mammas chest she lies there active and alert and soon finds the breast. From there she gets another breastfeed. This time from her other mamma. Milk already established from months of pumping before she was born. Then her brothers and grandparents laid their hands and kisses on her. This was her 4th stage of labour. Her uninterrupted golden hours. Her foundation. #homebirth #inducedlactation #undisturbedbirth #breastfeeding See more

19.01.2022 Test weighs are poor practice and I’ve been hearing of them being done around the area more frequently of late. Watch your baby drinking and seek proper help from an IBCLC.

19.01.2022 There are so many things I love about breastfeeding, it is a massive pet of my life personally and professionally. This world #worldbreastfeedingweek2020 the theme is breastfeeding for a healthier planet. Just as breastfeeding our little humans has health benefits for mum and baby it does for the earth. ... To breastfeed is to save the earths resources (agriculture, water, power, packaging, transport, money). To breastfeed needs resources for mums and families (community support, health professional education, friends and family) so they can breastfeed with confidence for as long as they choose to. Here’s to helping families achieve their goals for another year ahead. #wbw2020 #worldbreastfeedingweek2020 #IBCLC #louisedavidlc

16.01.2022 Great little piece on the over diagnosed cows milk proteins intolerance (CMPI). As many as 15% of families are trying to manage/treat/deal with a baby with CMPI. The actual prevalence of true CMPI is more like 1%. 7min listen or a quick read if you scroll down to the transcript. ... https://www.abc.net.au//cows-milk-allergy-fears-s/12864224

15.01.2022 Did you know babies of wealthy families in the late 1800’s early 1900’s were dying of scurvy!!! The reason it was only relevant to the wealthy babies was because these were the families that stopped breastfeeding and began feeding with the first formulas. The first formulas were very inferior to breastmilk and the lack of Vit C = scurvy. (No need to mention the lack of everything else and the increased risk of everything else) ... Thanks to the girls at @thispodcastwillkillyou for this tid bit #tpwky @thispodcastwillkillyou

14.01.2022 This was a great listen. Fantastic take on induction of labour, not the usual view of cascade of intervention many are familiar with, rather the overlooked unconsidered effect it has on baby and the breastfeeding relationship. A great listen for families and midwives and IBCLCs ! #themidwivescauldronpodcast

12.01.2022 Breastfeeding and alcohol While it’s ideal to not consume alcohol while you’re breastfeeding, some families cite wanting to drink alcohol from time-to-time as a reason for weaning. This needn’t be the case and here’s a few tips for how you can enjoy a drink and not interrupt your breastfeeding. 1. Understand how it works. ... Alcohol travels into and out of the milk freely. Alcohol content is the same in the milk as it is in the blood. Alcohol reaches the milk by about 30-60 mins after drinking, the level peaks then decreases eventually to nothing. 2. Be prepared. If you’re in a situation where you’d like to drink a plan ahead and drink around your baby’s feeds. Depending on your baby’s age and how predictable their feeds are, you may be able to gauge how many drinks and how far apart they can be. If you plan on a big night of drinking, in the lead up you can express extra breast milk that your baby can drink while your body is eliminating the alcohol. 3. Getting rid of the alcohol. Pump and dump is out. The only thing that gets rid of the alcohol content is time as your blood filters the milk. If you pump and remove the milk in your breast while there is alcohol in your blood, it will simply be replaced by milk with alcohol in it. Just wait until time has passed. 4.Make safe decisions. If a parent or carer has been drinking they may be more likely to make risky decisions about things like safe sleep practices or drink driving. Be aware of your actions under the influence. If you have unintentionally had too many drinks or your baby needs to feed before enough time has passed you CAN feed your baby. The Australian Breastfeeding Association even has an app Feed Safe you can use to help watch the timing of your drinks and feeding. Cheers to a safe and happy Christmas that is full of happy and safe breastfeeding families.

01.01.2022 Dads don’t need bottles to bond with their babies...

01.01.2022 You have options in all aspects of your care. In order to make choices you have to know about the options. Care providers need to present all options to you, not just their recommendation. If you are informed you can choose and be confident in your decisions. The language we use around options and choice is important because it effects our culture of birth and breastfeeding as a whole. When you tell another mum to be, I HAD to do this because of x, y, z. The one thing that ...sticks is HAD to. If x, y, z happens to me then I’ll HAVE to do that as well. I had to top up with formula because my baby didn’t gain weight Actual options: - Feed on demand,Switch feed back and forward, use breast compressions. Work with an IBCLC - Use donor milk - Use bottles or cup or syringe or supply line - Have another directly breastfeed baby - If age appropriate give solid food - Use formula Mum quotes re: supplement choices for baby not gaining weight. I chose to use doner milk because I had lots of friends breastfeeding and they offered their milk. I also used a supply line at the breast when I could so I wasn’t using too many bottles. I used food because my baby was 5 mths old and I didn’t have to use bottles to give him extra calories, I didn’t want the bottle to confuse him more. I chose formula because it suited me best. It doesn’t matter which choice you make. It matters that you knew there were options. You choose what works for you and you own it. You should never Have to do anything, you should be able to get to a place where you can happily say, I choose THIS option for ME. ***
