24.01.2022 Life is an adventure - and here we are now learning how to work from home. I've written a little about what I have learned over the many years I too had to run a business from home.
24.01.2022 Small business matters. Not only do they employ one of the largest proportions of the local community but they are also often where you find the birthplace of innovation and invention. It's vital that their voice is included by local, state and federal government. Sadly I feel that local government is choosing ideology over community needs. More information will be released to you all on this soon. Small business voices MATTER.
23.01.2022 The Code of Conduct for Commercial Leases is finally out. If you rent a shop premise you need to be aware of these protections. (may be a hard read)
23.01.2022 Parking report for today: The old Websters car park in Melville Street has been closed down to create a COVID Testing area.
22.01.2022 Anyone find it odd that there are a number of off street parks and places along Elizabeth street in the midtown area where you can sit and have your lunch or a coffee - and they are rarely if ever used? The UTAS area across from Stag is one. Rarely if ever has people sitting there. The park you can access 50m up Patrick Street is amazing with a myriad of facilities there to enjoy. Yet rarely enjoyed by that many.
22.01.2022 My goodness I guess this is our new normal eh. Thanks Lord Mayor.
22.01.2022 A word about hoarding: I believe it is NOT triggered from from the expected lack of avaiabliity of the goods in a number of cases - but rather the expected lack of funds to buy what is needed much later in the future. It is a signal displaying a strong lack of confidence in ones' position in the future. Anyone who lives paycheck to paycheck would feel it intensively.
21.01.2022 My workplace is located just 5 metres from Elizabeth Street - and we were never informed about the PARKing day. What a misnomer that is - removing a main street of well used car parks so 'more people' can come. And exactly where will these 'more people' be parking their cars? Certainly it will impact our clients who will not be able to find a nearby park, the hairdresser across the street is likely tearing their hair out too as where will their clients park???
20.01.2022 Please consider signing this petition. The congestion in Hobart is already bad - why make it worse. Our families will suffer from lack of time at home, and small business will suffer due to less access to their client base. Productivity will also be lost in general.
20.01.2022 Will be releasing survey results soon on what people and small business really think about development to Elizabeth Street between the CBD and North Hobart. If you want to be included please feel free to complete - its just 13 questions and takes around 3 minutes.
19.01.2022 Tomorrow morning!!!!
19.01.2022 Talking Point Article from Mercury on Friday 5th March - not released online sadly. Traffic on Macquarie Street, Hobart, and, inset, Elizabeth Street. Main picture: Luke Bowden Strangling Hobart’s traffic flow with big ideas is a blow to many of our vital small businesses THE concept of sticky streets, or streets that people want to stick around in at the expense of traffic flow, works in some parts of the world. It’s worked in large cities where choking off a few streets won...Continue reading
18.01.2022 "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past." George Orwell, 1984 We should not aim to sanitise our history but rather remember it for all its good and bad elements - and learn to be better as a society for it.
14.01.2022 I found this article an interesting read - more so that it does more than complain about censorship but also goes on to explain how each of us can still bring difficult conversations to the table.
13.01.2022 So business is doing well today - and next week - if you have a reasonable expectation that work is going to do 30% drop compared to last year anytime up until ...September you really need to consider enrolling. If you don't and you have a drop - you can't apply for job keeper after the 31st May and be able to claim for April/May. Sooner you can work what your sales are going to do - the better. See more
13.01.2022 Finally the Code of Conduct for Commerical Leases has been released by the government. I have taken a direct excerpt from it to give you an idea how it might function. Link to the entire code is there too.
13.01.2022 Here is a quote from a fresh report on North Hobart Planning: Apparently its a VIRTUE that North Hobart suffers from crap parking. Its a VIRTUE that small business's cannot provide easy access to their clients and its a VIRTUE that any parking that was available is happily sucked dry by UberEats ....
12.01.2022 So whilst visiting our daughter in Brisbane we figured we would have a go at escooters. Thankfully we were able to practise at the Brisbane Botantical Gardens. I can comfortably say that they would be a bloody menace on a narrow footpath with any other pedestrians or bikes etc. You need lots of very flat surfaces and very wide paths to use safely. Incredibly hard to provide such in Hobart if not prohibitively expensive. Can't replace public transport at all. Only work if parking totally sucks, you have nice weather and someone left a charged scooter near you to pick up.
08.01.2022 Director payments have a method for being recognized by ATO for the Boost payments now :)
08.01.2022 The Lord Mayor's COC sprung forth due in part to her stroppy reply to my opinion piece tabled in the Mercury on the 18th January 2020 as attached. Also attached is her letter to the editor. Given COVID helped demonstrate how correct I had been with it all. That the COC supported the accuracy of the material ... I think an apology is due from our Lord Mayor.
07.01.2022 You will not get that job keeper money from ATO unless you fill in the monthly report just available. You will need to report accurate GST turnover for April and a guesstimate for May's turnover. Keep records how you worked this out - it may be asked for by the ATO later.
06.01.2022 And for the next ludicrous installment from the HCC planning. Here is what I had to say: Parking should be improved NOT reduced. Its a disgrace that no bonafide consultation with the current business community happened. We have not been approached, even once. This will negatively impact our business and those around us. Clients already complain about lack of access and complain how it has steadily gotten worse. OUR Business models REQUIRE SUFFICIENT parking to meet our cu...stomers needs. A quick poll of small businesses in the immediate area have 7/9 so far who will be significantly negatively impacted and the remaining two want to consider it. One of the 7 would have never moved here had they known of the plan. Small businesses will struggle and move away as a result of your plan. Frankly this utopian idealism is appalling. You are forcing the small business community out. We have been neglected for so many years with all the CBD programs yet still survive. Your HELP is no more than a wanton display of elitism parading as community ideals. We have all seen the debacle that is North Hobart. STOP! TALK TO US! NOT HAPPY!!! See more
05.01.2022 If your ATO BOOST payment is slow reaching you - please check with the ATO that they have your bank account details!

03.01.2022 Anyone feeling ignored today? We will be completing a strong slice of the impacted businesses - talking to everyone we can. 90% of all businesses in this area HATE this concept to date. Yet here we are with an Alderman who has the temerity to suggest that most everyone likes it. APPALLING.
03.01.2022 Anyone here who works/has a business in the Mid Town area of Hobart? I have just set up a page which is set up to give you a voice. https://www.facebook.com/HobartMidTownSmallBusiness
