24.01.2022 Did you know you have thoughts that don’t belong to you? Thoughts that form beliefs about people who are perceived as different. It’s ok if you didn’t know. These thoughts are sneaky. They come in through the back door and embed their belief in you. Now, what if these thoughts were sneaking through the back door continuously from the day you are born? 24.01.2022 Supporting culturally marginalised groups is the focus and you’re feeling so guilty about being part of the dominant culture. Guilty about the oppressive systems in place. And guilty about the actions of your ancestors. The truth is, your guilt is hindering you understanding, ability and capacity for being a good ally. Here are a few reasons why holding on to guilt hinders allyship: [ 1,140 more word ] http://louiseoreilly.com.au//5-reasons-why-guilt-hinders-/

24.01.2022 By acknowledging the original names of places, you acknowledged the First people of that place and their culture. This creates inclusion. When discriminatory graffiti like this is done, I often wonder what the deep motivation for the action is. Is it through feelings or superiority?... Is it because of hatred? Is it because of fear? Is it based is feelings of powerlessness? Or maybe it was a display of some sort for others? I know these questions can’t be answered but one this is certain. There are innocent people who are very hurt by the way another person has chosen to use some paint. The positive that came out of this is, these actions have been condemned by the community.

15.01.2022 Something like writing an open letter to speak up about marginalisation, sexism, racism or and other ‘ism’ is one of the ways privilege can be harnessed to create change leading to inclusion of all. I love this letter from Kevin Rudd and am very happy that he is taking action to address the issues of the Murdoch empire.

15.01.2022 State Library of Western Australia I have a few #DisruptedIdeas for you. Disrupted Idea 1: If you want to be hosting conversations around the theme of "A Better World" and you invite Aboriginal people to speak at the event, you ensure that the cultural protocol of the area is respected. Inviting Aboriginal people to speak on the country that they don't belong to without local Elder blessings is culturally inappropriate.... Disrupted Idea 2: It is a good idea to educate your organisation on tokenism. I see you have an Acknowledgment of country both on your website and on the site for the Disrupted Festival event too. It says the State Library of WA pays respects to the Elders. Acknowledgments are not momentary expressions or feel-good statements. They are a declaration of a commitment to act and operate in a way that is respectful. Disrupted Idea 3: Disruption of the status quo, having progressive & innovative discussions is not about disruption for the sake of disruption. While a diverse conversation is a great place to create new ideas and ways of thinking and new solutions. Adding people to the discussion for the purpose of controversy actually hinders the discussion. Disrupted Idea 4: There are many MANY Aboriginal people within the countries of WA that are more than able and equipt to contribute to these types of discussions. Building genuine relationships with Aboriginal people and the extended community will present wonderful opportunities for local discussion. Especially while in the midst of COVID restrictions. Disrupted Idea 5: The person you had invited to speak does not offer any new ideas to the table. They are the ideals, philosophies, and ideologies of the past and that still exist today. You can't disrupt a conversation with more of what's already been said. State Library of Western Australia I hope you have read the comments left on your post. The comments from my people, the Noongar people. And I hope to are taking everything being said on board and working to improve your organisations cultural awareness and responsiveness. If you need further clarification on any of my ideas, please feel free to PM me. In essence, this has started the conversation for the #disruptedfestival 2020 on "A better world"... If you want a better world, you need to be better. Louise O'Reilly

14.01.2022 I’ve never really felt like I fit in. What made me, me was a combination of my Scandinavian/white Australian heritage and my Aboriginal heritage. I knew inside me, it was a beautiful and harmonious mix of love, and cultural richness. Unfortunately, the outside world didn’t see it that way. I was one of many people that had no place. That belonged nowhere. [ 357 more words ] http://louiseoreilly.com.au//mixed-race-misfit-to-inclusi/

13.01.2022 Roselee Jencke (aka the Firebirds head coach), the Firebirds coaches, the leaderships group I shake my head along with many other community members. The decision to bench Jemma Mi Mi for the entire Indigenous round, even though she is the only Aboriginal woman in the sport, was a strategic mistake and leadership failure on your part. The first question ask myself is, what is the purpose of the Indigenous round? What is the intention behind it? Why is Netball Australia having...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Censoring history in schools can do so much harm to children... I know first hand

05.01.2022 While the word black isn’t inherently bad, society has used it, implied, constructed it and created socially conditioned associations to it to suggest it is wrong or bad or lesser than. This is why learning culturally inclusive language is so important [msg me for details of my online course on this] Another thing to remember is it’s name is in reference to the apparent similar appearance to a group of people. This was don’t without their consent or without them being part ...of that conversation. Also it’s not a big shock that there is a push to change this name. For many, many years referring to Balga as Black boy has been regarded as inappropriate and offensive hence why they are widely known as balga or grass tree. Simple things like name changes are beautiful ways of being inclusive. By listening to the community and taking action accordingly, you show respect and that you value those people and their input (especially when it’s in reference to them). It’s open up a space where healing can begin and genuine relationships can be built. This is the time for the shire to stop, listen to the Aboriginal community and act accordingly. I support the name change. If you’re in business and want to look at your cultural appropriateness or cultural inclusivity, I’m available for coaching and consultancy session. Msg me for more info on these services.

05.01.2022 How do I amplify Aboriginal voices in business? This is a common question I get asked. You may know how to amplify Aboriginal voices but amplifying them in business is a new thing altogether. After all, you need to keep in mind your brand, your voice, your message, as well as your industry and the products and services you are selling.... Amplifying Aboriginal voices in business is very different to amplifying them as an individual. Some of the things I recommend that small businesses do to amplify the voices of Aboriginal people is to first engage in what my Noongar peoples call Dahni. Dahni is the practice of deep listening. Listen to those voices deeply first. Feel them. Contemplate them. Allow them to connect with you. This in itself will produce new thoughts, feelings that’ll guide you on how to can best amplify those voices. It’ll guide and inspire action within you to amplify those voices in a real and physical way. After you’ve listened, you can share. Share directly from those Aboriginal voice (who choose to share within the public arena). And I don’t mean share everything! Share what is relevant to you, your business, and your customers. If speaking up against the trademarking of Aboriginal words isn’t something you feel strongly about or isn’t relevant to your business or your customers, there’s no need for you to share it. However, if you as a business owner want to support Aboriginal voices in speaking up against cultural appropriation in business, then share. A good way to look at it is, what values does my business support and share from there. Share those values from an Aboriginal perspective. And share it publicly so your clients and your community know where you and your business stand with these topics. Keeping that support to ourselves only continues the maintenance of the status quo. Lastly, I want you to know that if you share your support on certain social issues, you don’t have to have all the answers or reasons why. If people start questioning you about them, it’s ok for you to say you don’t know the answers but the people closest to the problem do. Those people are in the Aboriginal community and you are listening and supporting them to create the changes they know need to be changed. These are just some of the ways you can amplify Aboriginal voices in your business. If you’d like to hear more about what small businesses can do to amplify Aboriginal voices, please join me in a 1 hr webinar on Tuesday 18thAugust at 11am AWST. You can purchase your ticket to attend here https://AscensionPersonalDevelopmentAcademy.as.me/ Bonus: the first 30 people to sign up for the webinar will get a special gift from me.

03.01.2022 Silence and apathy are two forms of inaction that allow the continuation of social injustice and oppression. I saw a quote from Angela Davis today that said "In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist. We must be anti-racist." Here in Australia, the 26th of January is nationally recognised as Australia Day while for the Blak community, my community, is known as Invasion Day or our Day of Mourning. There have been protests from the Aboriginal community to change ...the date of Australia Day being in the 26th Jan since the year it was announced and we are still protesting for the date to be changed. The 26th of January is the anniversary of colonisation and the beginning of so much trauma for my people. Grief is a normal and natural emotion to feel and the resistance to change the date is rooted in racism. This year rather than hiding myself away from the world, disconnecting and unworthy of the acknowledgment of respect to grieve, I decided to speak up. Use my voice. Stand up and express, as an Aboriginal woman, that I want the date to change. Now I'm supporting others who support a date change too. Next week I'm hosting a webinar called Stop Silent Compliance... How to speak up about Changing the Date. I'll be sharing: -what's appropriate to say and how to say it -what is and isn't respectful to Aboriginal people the psychology behind effective communication that creates change -different ways you can start the conversation of changing the date -how to manage conflict if it arises -how to keep yourself emotionally and energetically safe I would like to invite you to join me in the webinar. If you want to learn all this in one value-packed hour with me and create positive social change here in Australia, you can book your spot right here: https://LouiseOReilly.as.me/changethedate-webinar The webinar is $51 AU and will be on 20th Jan at 11am AWST. A replay will be available if you can't make it there LIVE. #ichooseinclusion2021 #changethedate
