24.01.2022 Greater Sydney restrictions Those in Greater Sydney will be allowed to have 10 people in their home plus any number of children under the age of 12 on December 24, 25, and 26. From December 27, the number of people allowed in one household (including those under the age of 12) will revert back to 10, regardless of age.
23.01.2022 Latest Covid report. Take care in Newtown.
21.01.2022 This article sadly is correct about how little power and control Councillors really have over the affairs of Council.
20.01.2022 Smile - a celebration of the Inner West by my friends Harriet McKern and Fran Tinley. Enjoy!
20.01.2022 BREAKING. Two men have been shot in a house in Henry Street, Lewisham this afternoon. The medics landed a helicopter on Petersham Oval. Sadly, one man died on the way to hospital. You may be hearing choppers circling, the police are still looking for the perpetrator who remains at large. There's no need to panic, just stay away from Lewisham Station and Henry Street until the police have completed their investigation. https://www.9news.com.au//c342aac6-8d54-4a4a-8172-f5a992e8
19.01.2022 Dibble Avenue waterhole in Marrickville is an old brick quarry now used to irrigate Marrickville Golf Course. It's home for a family of ducks and many other birds. It's surrounded on all sides by apartment blocks. Council plans to improve it as a nature reserve
18.01.2022 Scott Farlow MLC (Lib of course) got stuck into Inner West Council last night in Parliament. At least he didn't mention the Greens. Enjoy! https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//Pag/HansardResult.aspx
18.01.2022 Please read. Self explanatory. I can't comment. https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//notice-tracking-details
18.01.2022 What is wrong with people?
18.01.2022 I've had the great pleasure of meeting Liliane Brady, former Mayor Cobar. Her advice to me? Keep going hard! https://www.abc.net.au//cobar-mayor-lilliane-brad/13130092
18.01.2022 Did you know Australia is exporting weapons to Saudi Arabia to be used in the Yemen war after the UK High Court banned British arms exports? 85,000 children have been killed in Yemen. It takes one click to sign the petition.
17.01.2022 BREAKING. Two inner-city councils have started discussions with top Silk, Brett Walker, SC, in the hope he may be able to assist in recovering funds that were supposed to be made available for amalgamation costs. Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne and his Canterbury-Bankstown counterpart Khal Asfour made the revelation at Monday’s parliamentary inquiry into the integrity, efficacy and value for money of NSW Government grant programs.
16.01.2022 Sadly, the majority of Inner West Councillors have consistently voted against heritage. The majority voted to demolish the Coptic Church in Sydenham to build a skate park some years ago. The Coptic Church had been allowed, first by Marrickville Council and then Inner West, to decay. It became too expensive to replace the roof and repurpose the building. Winged Victory was narrowly saved by a public campaign and now is on display at the Australian War Memorial. The Church of C...hrist is heritage, not for its architecture, but for its history in Marrickville. Inner West LGA has the greatest number of boarding houses, the cheapest form of affordable housing, in Australia. The number is rising as developers use the easier planning allowed for boarding houses. However, they are not suitable for families. Housing for women over 55, the fastest growing homeless group, is not provided in these boarding house developments. Many are intended as housing for international students - now a lost market for a while. There is no legal requirement for boarding house owners to charge residents less than commercial market rates, so they are not cheap. Fresh Hope is one of the largest charities in Australia, with over $100 million in income (government grants) and assets. This makes it a pretty big developer. Most of its assets are in nursing homes and some other types of accommodation. The Church of Christ congregation no longer exists in Marrickville because its tenets of US style evangelical fundamentalism do not reflect the social and cultural values of our modern diverse multicultural Marrickville. At least we have created new heritage with multi award winning Marrickville Library, a stellar example of how heritage can be retained and enhanced in a modern context.
16.01.2022 At Marrickville Town Hall for citizenship ceremony. Congratulations to our newest Australians!
15.01.2022 Inner West Council is installing safe to drink stainless steel water fountains for humans and dogs in our parks. This one's at Weekley Park, Stanmore, and so is the magnificent ancient fig tree.
14.01.2022 Want to know more about rates harmonisation in Inner West Council? Meet me and Councillor Marghanita da Cruz on Saturday 10.15 am at Leichhardt Town Hall https://fb.me/e/66AoTJrIj
14.01.2022 This mural is the 100th in Inner West Councils Perfect Match public art program.( Thanks Porters Paints) Award winning artist Wendy Sharpe painted the Women's Empowerment Mural at the corner of Church Street and Federation Street Newtown .10 days work .. She is shown (black jumper) with Ewan and Matt ( whose house this is) and MoMo who assisted her opening tins of painting washing brushes and generally being a fabulous help..
14.01.2022 Heritage building in Alt Street Ashfield hit by lightning in Tuesday's storm. Proud to say that Council staff responded quickly and effectively along with police and firies. Great to see. No loss of life. The copper dome and tower are damaged and the street was closed today. Thanks to former Marrickville councillor Max Phillips for this footage.
13.01.2022 Happy New Year! Remember to wear your masks in public - transport, shops, cinemas, theatres, bars, medical centres, hospitals and nursing homes. Not just to avoid the $200 fine, do it to be a good community member!
13.01.2022 Ashfield Pool opens today! Best pool in Inner West! Here I am with my fellow Greens Councillors this morning. You're welcome!
12.01.2022 On Tuesday Councillors will be voting to put a plan of management on exhibition for redesign of Marrickville Gold Course (owned by Council) as a 9 hole course and new recreational spaces along Cooks River. The golf club, clubhouse, parking and 9 hole course will continue, with improved recreation for all residents of Inner West. There are many neighouring 18 hole courses, including Barnwell Park in Canada Bay, Massey Park and Strathfield. 9 hole courses include Lane Cove, C...astle Cove, Cammeray, Palm Beach and Avalon. All have 18 hole competitions by playing the course twice. 9 hole golf courses have extra tees and holes with different lengths, for people of different abilities. A 9 hole game takes 1-2 hours to play, an18 hole game takes 3 -4 hours to play. There is a demand for shorter games as people have more demands on their time. Golfing great Greg Norman now designs short courses as the way of the future. Council's recreation study showed the biggest demand among residents is for safe walking areas and park areas for enjoyment. Golf is a minority sport, the club claims to have 700 members, many are non local. The LGA has 200,000 residents in need of open space, which is very tight in our LGA. We have less than any other area. Rising sea levels means the golf course adjacent to Cooks River is often flooded and unplayable. There is NO plan to sell land to developers. It's in a flood zone and is owned by Council, who wants to improve its use for recreation purposes. The Federal members for Barton and Grayndler have NO business sticking their noses into Council business. They don't make decisions about Council, we Councillors do!
12.01.2022 Thursday 9 September 5.30 pm. Zooming to find out about solar gardens
11.01.2022 BREAKING. Westconnex abandons blasting in Annandale!!!! Councillors had a briefing on blasting recently. It became obvious that the NSW government and the contractor had ZERO regard for Inner West residents. And ZERO knowledge of blasting in suburban areas. Because it's WRONG to do it!! https://www.smh.com.au//westconnex-abandons-blasting-plan-
11.01.2022 Water Wise Guidelines now apply The NSW Government announced that Water Wise Guidelines replaced Level 1 water restrictions from 1 December 2020. 10.01.2022 So....is Glad's visit to Addi Road Cultural Centre a coincidence? A nice day out? Pull the other one! And be very...angry!
09.01.2022 Shame on Labor, Independents and Liberals for voting for Councillor Macri AGAIN as Deputy Mayor. All non Greens except independent Councillor Lockie voted for Councillor Macri, instead of Greens candidate Councillor Kiat. Even though there are 5 Labor councillors and 5 Greens councillors. Labor rules the roost with empty promises and heavy handed tactics. All Greens candidates over last 3 years have been rejected due to the backroom power sharing deals between Labor, 2 so called independents and Liberals.
09.01.2022 The last word on the subject. Inner West Council has engaged an excellent temporary General Manager and will soon commence the search for a permanent General Manager. https://www.smh.com.au//inner-west-council-ceo-michael-dee
09.01.2022 At Leichhardt Town Hall with Clr Marghanita da Cruz for Drop in Session about Rates right now! Councillors room ground floor, use side entry
07.01.2022 This article is from October 2019, when I criticised gift giving to councillors at the Local Government NSW conference and argued for a $50 cap - and got quoted. Now the NSW government has introduced legislation to increase the cap on gifts given to councillors. At least I'm still on council to vote against it at Inner West Council! https://www.governmentnews.com.au/councils-vote-to-scrap-/

06.01.2022 What's the premier doing visiting Addi Road Community Centre on a Friday when nothing's happening? Dept of Lands owns the site. Is she casing the joint for developers? We may have a new fight on our hands! Btw Koshari Korner's food is yum!
05.01.2022 Throwback to 2017. Before I mastered Facebook Live!
05.01.2022 3 years ago today, I was proud to be elected as your #1 Councillor for Damun Stanmore Ward with the highest vote of any candidate in that ward and the 3rd highest vote in all of Inner West Council. One more year to go before the next election! Let's make it memorable!
03.01.2022 Great news! Ashfield Pool is ready for summer! Only a couple of months after my hard hat photo! I'll be attending the grand (!) opening tomorrow.
03.01.2022 Turn on the lights! Inner West Community Energy lights up its first commercial scale solar PV system at Acre Eatery, Camperdown Commons. Inner West Council is a proud supporter!
02.01.2022 Marrickville Golf Course on Sunday (today). Not exactly busy. It's built on high pressure oil pipelines owned by Shell. That's why there will never be development and it can only be used for recreational purposes
01.01.2022 BREAKING. This is a fantastic win for Inner West Council. We took Transport for NSW to court to fight their resumption of King George Park, a major sporting field, for Westconnex construction work. Transport for NSW offered a paltry sum as compensation, but Inner West Council has won $2.8 million and 75% of the park must be returned to Council by 2025.
