25.01.2022 Do you have a child who is constantly moving and making noise? Or one who is off in their own world and never seems to listen to you? Or one who runs away at the drop of a hat? And what is it that triggers the overwhelm for you? Is it the noise? It is for me This podcast episode shed lots of light on these different types of children and adults and our different sensory needs that explain these types of behaviors and also practical ideas on how we can manage ou...rs and our children’s different needs and emotions. There is even one musical strategy that I often use myself Thanks to the wonderful Happy Mama Movement podcast interview with Heidi Garcia - Occupational Therapist and Mum for her insights. We do stories and then songs but often they need more... so we lie with them and they choose a meditation, which almost always sends them off to sleep. They’ve been a lifesaver! They have simple breathing strategies included and beautiful positive messages for your child to go to sleep feeling good about th...emselves. 24.01.2022 We have a couple of spaces available for Individual Music Therapy sessions - in home visits (pending location) or in Canungra, in the Scenic Rim and Gold Coast areas. I work a lot with children who have developmental delays, and who may or may not also have diagnoses such as Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Anxiety and more. Music Therapy is unique in that it is a highly motivating modality - children love it! Whilst being fun it can also address many areas ...and goals impacting on a child's functioning - in relation to their speech and communication, emotional self-regulation, cognitive and social skills. I am also a Registered NDIS Provider so, NDIS Funding can cover Music Therapy sessions. Please get in touch if you or someone you know is interested. 21.01.2022 School Holidays here in QLD - Music and You is having a little break from our Music Therapy sessions, after an unusual past few months, where we adapted quickly to Covid-19 restrictions by running Telehealth sessions for those families who wanted to and were able to continue accessing Music Therapy, and have now smoothly transitioned back to running mostly in-person sessions again. Thank you for your efforts in adapting to the changes alongside me, and all of your ongoing support. I hope you can get a chance to slow down a little, enjoy these beautiful sunny winter days, listen to some of your favourite music, sing along/dance to it!, make up some silly songs with your children, or perhaps ask for some help if you need a break, and do whatever rejuvenates you
21.01.2022 Some uplifting music for you this rainy, cool Saturday here in SE QLD. May it lift your mood, bring you energy and all the feel good vibes What music brings you all the feel good vibes? Please share in the comments
20.01.2022 Does your child have Autism, or do you know someone that has Autism (now known as ASD- Autism Spectrum Disorder)? This video is great. From the mouths of children with ASD, they tell us so much about how they experience the world, their unique strengths, as well as what they find challenging. Let’s listen and learn, so we can be more understanding and supportive. ... https://m.youtube.com/watch
20.01.2022 I LOVE this. It cannot NOT put you in a good mood! Have a listen..., and watch the video too ... and I encourage you to use music in your home to change all of those moods!! There has been a lot in our home recently and music is the first thing I turn to... it just changes the energy and mood almost instantly. Thank you Music with Gina https://youtu.be/s3MI3cgf-Rg
20.01.2022 This is how I’m feeling at the moment... 2 days before the school year starts and my youngest possum is about to start Prep.... all the mixture of feelings in this in-between stage... How about you? & I wonder how our little people are feeling when they might not have the language to fully express themselves yet.... ? Art, and music are great ways for us, and our little people to express those mixture of feelings especially during these big transitions. Ps. My boys just drew weird pictures of me during our art session this morning! ... maybe they are not too phased about starting school?!...
19.01.2022 Has your child been having difficulty regulating - managing their big feelings, behavior, attention ?? I think how whole household has! Is it no wonder after all of the change, upheaval, and talk of Covid-19... that has been around us all this past ... how long is it now?! Allison Davies, fellow Music Therapist, explains so simply & engagingly how it is our brains that aren’t coping and causing these difficulties regulating, along with anxiety, overwhelm and sensory overload in many cases. She gives such simple and practical strategies of how we can care for our children’s (and our) brains so that they can function at their very best, many of which involve music. Click on the link in the post below to sign up for the free webinar & have a listen You’re guaranteed to learn & be inspired
19.01.2022 Another of my roles as Music Therapist is Session Leader for the Sing & Grow program - where I go into organizations, often supporting vulnerable families, and run 8 week evidence-based music programs for young children and families to build relationships, increase community connectedness and improve child development outcomes through musical play and reflective discussions. Last year Sing & Grow conducted a national evaluation project showing significant positive outcomes for parents and children There are so many benefits from informal music making with your children at home - keep on singing, dancing, making up silly songs etc See my YouTube Channel if you need some inspiration! https://youtube.com/channel/UCoROPoTs-TzNFdgvqS3onig
16.01.2022 Have you heard about "Steptember"? A couple of my neighbours are using this great opportunity to walk every chance they get!, (ie. exercise) whilst also raising $$ to support children and adults living with Cerebral Palsy. What a great cause and way to get motivated to exercise :) If you are able to make a donation, click on the link below to support my neighbour, who is walking to support this cause, or get involved and start your own "Steptember" :)
15.01.2022 Big Feelings..., oh gosh, how do we deal with them for our little people, let alone all of the big feelings we also have as parents, and in all of the other roles we have?!.... I love this new song of Stephanie Leavell’s from Music for Kiddos it is the perfect way for your children to name a feeling, have it validated and then think of a way to express it and move it through and out of their bodies.... and btw - it’s a great tool for us big people too - I’ve been using it myself lately Families seeing me in their Music Therapy sessions may be hearing it soon too
15.01.2022 On the road taking a short pit stop to clean instruments yesterday before doing another home visit to work with a family and make lots of fabulous music whilst also working on goals of increasing attention and focus, practicing strategies to cope with big feelings and practicing the all important executive function of inhibiting impulses. I feel very privileged and grateful to have work that I love
15.01.2022 It’s heating up here... it’s nearing the end of the School year... we’re tired, our little ones are struggling to play nicely with each other, and be reasonable! - sound familiar?... This may help shift the moods and energy in your household. My latest Spotify Playlist - Calming Children’s Songs (easy on the ear for us parents too ). Hope it helps ... https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0641s4uVYxW8vlqjoN8RGk
14.01.2022 BREATHING SONG Breathing (intentionally) has helped me play the flute, pass my performance and aural exams at Uni when I was extremely nervous, through childbirth twice, during years of broken sleep, and has now become a part of my life - parenting!, my yoga, singing, and in my Music Therapy work with children who struggle with anxiety, change, sensory overload, meltdowns, sleep and more. This new little, simple Breathing Song is to help children (and their grown-ups) t...o learn and practice taking big, slow breaths in and out, so that they can then use it as a strategy in those times when they need it. Please have a listen, breathe, and use it for your little people and yourselves :) https://youtu.be/VkopYYHQkqk

13.01.2022 Well we’ve just returned from 3 days up at Rainbow Beach. Lots of beach time, sand dune running, hiking, whale & dolphin watching & adventuring ... & a bit of ukulele playing, some book reading and rest which was great Looking forward to seeing all of the lovely families I work with for Music Therapy in Term 4.
13.01.2022 Playing the flute in the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra is some of my ‘music therapy’ - being able to play & create beautiful music together, have a common language amongst a great bunch of fellow muso’s, 2hrs/week of being completely in the present - focused on the music, the conductor and nothing else... then the feeling of accomplishment after we perform for an audience at the end of a term- all make it therapeutic for me Do you have an old instrument tucked away somewhere or have you always wanted to learn one? It’s such a fantastic tool and skill to have - why not get it out and have a play, or start some lessons ...
13.01.2022 I’ll be playing the flute in this next Sunday And here is the link to watch it live streamed! https://youtu.be/6iUxOuSp7YQ

10.01.2022 So our first little possum turned 7 today! What a journey it has been! Here he was making good use of my gathering drum while I hung out washing! @ Canungra, Queensland
10.01.2022 Music and You is currently on School Holidays - ‘holidays’ with my 2 boys! ... which requires lots of outdoors, action-based activities - swimming, bike riding, trampoline & hose, etc... moving! But by far my favorite of these is any that take place in nature ... At the creek or beach. It grounds & relaxes us all... & we all come home, usually, feeling calmer and happier Aside from music this is my next go to which leaves us all feeling good! What are your go to things/activities that put you/your family in your happy place?? (Ps. 2nd pic is my leaf kebab)
09.01.2022 It was such a pleasure and honor to make some music for this dear little blossom and her family on her special day recently. Those smiles just made my day What better way to celebrate your little person’s special day than with good friends and some live music
09.01.2022 Here's a short blog post about how Music Therapy can be so accessible, motivating and beneficial for children with ASD, written by one of my fellow Music Therapy colleagues in Brisbane. Thanks to Kindred Music Therapy :) If you are interested in Music Therapy for your child or someone you know in the Scenic Rim, Logan or Gold Coast areas, please see my website: www.musicandyou.com.au or contact me on [email protected]
08.01.2022 Music - is it not clearer now, more than ever, that it really is the universal language. Love this community effort from 28 ‘very hairy men’ In Mullumbimby, Dustyesky - ‘the most infectious choir on the planet’!
07.01.2022 Happy Stormy Halloween everyone! If it weren't for my 2 children, and that I live in the Trick or Treating street of town, I probably wouldn't be talking about Halloween!... You might even see me out Trick or Treating... if this weather passes?! So to get us into the mood, I love this song of Stephanie Leavell's at Music for Kiddos :) https://youtu.be/Yv687bvCdME
07.01.2022 It was Allied Health Professionals Day this week. Music Therapists are part of this fabulous group of professionals. It is a privilege to work alongside and collaborate with other therapists - mainly Speech and OTs, to help support children and families the best that we can. Thank you to all of my dedicated colleagues. #ahps2020 #ahpday #ahpday2020
06.01.2022 Big s for Mr S. here doing some songwriting with me and working very hard to attend and focus during his Music Therapy session, which will hopefully transfer into other situations where he needs to maintain attention and focus. There are so many other benefits had from song writing, singing and instrument playing. What a fantastic way to build confidence, express yourself, develop language and pre-literacy skills, boost those feel-good hormones, develop motor coordination, and develop self-regulation skills and strategies. Loved your song and ideas Mr S. (Thank you to Mr S’s family for giving permission to share this video)
06.01.2022 "Wash your face in Orange Juice"... Do your kids love this one? the writer of these great books and songs, Peter Combe is doing a Facebook Live today! (1:30pm QLD time) in case you'd like to tune in :)
05.01.2022 ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) - but so much more than these words. I love this poem - it helps me to have a little more understanding and compassion for children who I work with, and their families, as their Music Therapist, whilst I continue to learn about ADHD and how it plays out for children and their families differently, so I can support them as best I can.
05.01.2022 New Drums ... Hamish is testing them out here before I start using them with our Music and You families in our Music Therapy sessions this week - very exciting Drumming can help our little people (and us!) in so many ways - with attention and focus, priming the brain for learning, motor planning and coordination, self-regulation, self-expression, and more. Looking forward to drumming with your little people soon
05.01.2022 Pizza Song Many of the children I have been working with this term, love this one! They love the opportunity to be creative and contribute their ideas of pizza toppings... and little do they know while we are having fun doing that, they are practicing synchronising with the beat (great for self-regulation and priming the brain to focus), crossing their midlines (great for brain development), and calming their nervous systems when they sing along as well. Warning - it may make you hungry!
05.01.2022 Juzzie Smith - you were awesome! It was so good to be able to see some live music again, & fill up my music cup. Juzzie just blows me away every time how he can make such amazing music all on his own, playing up to 6 instruments at once !!
04.01.2022 thank you Music for Kiddos
03.01.2022 Love this... Alanis Morrisette’s new single, Ablaze, from her new album, after an 8 year break from recording, and being busy bringing 3 little people into the world. I love the music making together with her girl live on tv!, the lyrics about her 3 children, and her connection with them, and the vehicle of music and song-writing to express what is sometimes difficult to express in words. Beautiful. My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze.... ...turn th...e volume up and sing it out loud! (Official video link in comments as well) See more
02.01.2022 Managing Anxiety with Music - a great informative video here from Mae, Music Therapist at Creative Vibes Music Therapy. She explains simply some of the research behind why our brains, bodies and mood respond to music so positively and some Music Therapy informed techniques on how we can use music for our own self-care and anxiety prevention in our families, AND... some tips on when we need to be careful of what music we listen to.... Thanks Mae https://youtu.be/B3-SuZlSsMc
02.01.2022 Music Therapy for me this week = going through my old song folders, finding the songs I want to play now, singing & strumming up a storm - feels so good. Singing, listening to, moving to or playing our favorite music is SO good for us - our brains, our nervous systems, our mood, & just leaves us feeling good... find your favorite music & use it however you can - listen, sing, play, dance, watch... whatever is most accessible for you.
01.01.2022 A great little song and activity, to give your children some extra sensory input, when they need it. It's to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat, so it's easy to remember, and add in actions such as squeezing, tapping, patting, rolling and whatever other actions your creative little people come up with . I use hacky sacks or the squeezy stress balls (a tennis ball would also work)- easy to pop in your bag and use wherever you are and whenever you need. This one has been very popular in our Music Therapy sessions since I started using it recently . Youtube link in comments.
