22.01.2022 Not long after the First World War, Europe suddenly saw the rise of nationalism and Fascism posing multiple threats to a lot of people and countries, perhaps just as we witness the rise of neo-nationalism and neofascism around the world today. It, however, took Pope Pius XI no time to realize the destructive nature of those movements, and countered it with the introduction and promulgation of the feast of Christ the King in 1925, whose purpose was to bring about ‘the signal b...enefits of true liberty, of calm order, of harmony, and of peace’ (cf. the Liturgical Year, 177) by reasserting Christ’s sovereignty over the entire world including all forms of political governance, as well as all civil organizations. Initially the feast was celebrated in October, and then moved to in the current position, meaning the end of the liturgical year as we know now, following the liturgical reform brought forth by the Vatican II Council. Once again this liturgical year is coming to its end this Sunday, and this gives us the opportunity to recall and celebrate the leadership of Jesus based on charity and service, not on power and authority like other forms of worldly leadership. In the Gospel marking the very last Sunday of the liturgical year, the evangelist presents before our eyes the scene of the Last Judgement, in which, Jesus, the Son of Man as he often referred to himself throughout his saving ministry, will re-appear in his divine glory and sit on the throne in the company of the angels as the ultimate Judge of all peoples. The Judge Lord is going to settle the account for everyone on earth just as the master did with his servants in the Gospel story last Sunday, and shall give every individual a verdict either an eternal reward or a never ending damnation depending to what people had carried out or failed to do in their lives. Fortunately Jesus has no intention to withhold any secret regarding to the Last Judgement, and he is so kind to share with us what we need to know about it. Thanks to his revelation we know that his judgement is going to base on the commandment of love, the summit of Jesus’ teachings, urging people to lovingly take care of each other, especially the less fortunate, such as the hungry and the thirsty, the stranger and the have-not, the sick and the imprisoned. So, it’s entirely up to each of us to decide where we are going to stand on the Judgement Day either on the side of the virtuous or on the side of the unfortunate. Let us ask the Lord to renew and transform our hearts, so that we may become less self-centric, and more generous to the needy around us, those whom He has entrusted to our care. Pray that we shall make Him proud on the Last Day for what we share with Jesus’ brothers and sisters today. Have a charity-filled week. Fr Henry See more

17.01.2022 This is the third Sunday in a row we have the vineyard as the principal theme in a series of Jesus’ talks about the Kingdom of God. If one wonders why Jesus seemed to hold dearly to his teaching the vineyard concept, a study of the first reading from the prophet Isaiah this Sunday would give us the key to unlock the secret. Isaiah used the viticultural language to denote the relationship between God and the Israelites, and even called the people of Israel ‘the vineyard of the... Lord of hosts’ as we hear in the last part of the reading. Though expected to yield good grapes of righteousness and faithfulness to God, its owner, it produced only sour grapes of idolatry and unfaithfulness. A return to the book of Genesis might even surprise us with the long and well-documented history of viticulture with a passage presenting to us Noah as the first vineyard cultivator and winemaker who got drunk from the wine he made to the point of lying down with nothing on in his tent and found later on by his sons. What happened next was no less fascinating, and I think I’d better leave the rest for you to go to the Bible and find out (cf. Gen 9.18-28). Jesus perhaps was well aware of these vineyard-related passages of the Hebrew Scripture, which, of course, were also popular to his audience, particularly the educated group of the chief priests and the elders as we see in the Gospel today. Here Jesus picked up the traditional element of the vineyard understood by his listeners as the symbol of Israel in relation to God, and added on his new elements of the tenants representing Jewish people, the servants representing the prophets sent to Jewish people by God, the vineyard owner and his son representing Jesus himself. Reading this story between the lines, one can see both a well-documented indictment of the crimes committed by his listeners’ ancestors against the prophets of old, and a repeat of history, which was about to be unfolded through his coming Passion and death. Jesus then sent them a very stern warning to let them know that they shall be hold accountable for those horrible acts of theirs through the termination of their working contract and the reception of a wretched fate, and on the other hand, a new vineyard working lease shall be arranged for new batch of tenants, symbolising us Christians, those who follow Jesus, the Son of God and are entrusted with the kingdom-building task refused by the first tenants, God’s original chosen people. Let us give praise and thanks to God for the opportunity to be part of His vineyard, the Church, and pray that we may be able to work hard and produce sweet grapes of good and exemplary works for the Lord as expected. Have a week of praise and thanksgiving. Fr Henry See more

09.01.2022 Envy and jealousy obviously are of our human DNA. It is not adults alone who have to deal with them, children do, too. My nearly three-year-old nephew would never be happy to have anything less than his older sister, despite his mum, my sister, sometimes had to scratch her head trying to pacify him, ‘No, Kevin, you can’t have it. That’s a girl thing.’ Buddha once warned his followers not to envy with others, because, he explained,‘he who envies others does not obtain peace of... mind.’ Jesus, of course, was well aware of this issue and dedicated the whole story to deal with it as we see in the Gospel account this Sunday. He told the disciples the narrative about the landowner (representing God) who made arrangements with workers (representing us), believers to come and work in his vineyard (representing the world and the Church) at various time, some started very early, some later, and some even at the end of the day. The tension then started to boil up at payment time, when everyone received an equal pay of one denarius each from the boss. Early workers felt unhappy not with the payment, but rather with the fact that those who came at the last minute, did just one hour of work, and enjoyed the same benefit. It is worth to know that one denarius is equivalent to $3.63 today, surely a good sum of money thousands of years ago, which in a way tells us about how generous the landowner was. In response to the tension amongst his workers, the landowner issued a statement to clarify (1) that he was fair to everyone by fulfilling his contract with them, (2) that he had every right to pay the last comer as much as the first one, and (3) that those who complained should swallow their bitter envy. Like what he did last week by telling the story about the forgiving king and the unforgiving servant to encourage the disciples to show compassion and forgiveness to others the way God has been compassionate and forgiving to them, Jesus used this Gospel account to exhort the disciples to follow the path of generosity God has shown them, and this path, of course, requires them to pay attention to envy and then jealousy and get rid of them. Some might ask here, ‘how can we get rid of them?’ In order to answer this one-million-dollar question, Roy T. Bennett is ready to lend us his helpful advice that ‘count your blessings, not your problems. Count your own blessings, not someone else’s. Remember that jealousy is when you count someone else’s blessings instead of your own.’ Let us pray for the grace to count our blessings and be grateful to them every day instead of counting others’ or our problems. Let us also remember 16 children in our parish making their First Holy Communion this Sunday. Pray that the food of the Eucharist will help transform their lives more Christ like and Christ-linked and nourish and keep them steady along the path of generosity. Have a generosity-oriented week, Fr Henry See more
