Have meaningful conversations with those around you. Reach out to those who might be withdrawing from others Get involved in activities Share your successes and difficulties with your loved ones! 20.01.2022 More social housing = more jobs and less members of our community without a roof over their heads. Help us spread awareness during Homelessness Week by signing the pledge to #BuildSocialHousing. Head to everybodyshome.com.au #HW2020
20.01.2022 Its June. Its Pride Month. Every year, Pride Month draws attention to issues currently facing the LGBTIQA+ community. This year, attention is being drawn to the black trans community, both in Australia and abroad. Trans people, particularly trans people of colour, face some of the worst violence, discrimination, harassment and life expectancy in the world.... Lous Place opens our doors to many transgender women every week to provide a safe place. We are working hard to become more trans-inclusive through staff training, reviewing our policies and listening to trans people in our community. There is a great documentary on Netflix at the moment called "Disclosure" - about the representation of trans people in the media. It points out the paradox that the more visible trans people are, the more violence they face. We all need to work together to make our community safe for transgender people. Our feminism needs to be intersectional and to break down gender binaries. To let people be free to live in the world, in their bodies, in all their glory. TransHub by ACON has some great resources for allies. Check it out here: https://www.transhub.org.au/allies
18.01.2022 Thank you so much to Lola and the Yr 9 Thinking and Advocacy class at Loreto Kirribilli who organised a year-wide drive that donated 80 essential care packages for our clients. 18.01.2022 Today is R U OK? Day. Lous Place loves this years theme - theres more to say after R U OK? How do you respond when somebody says they are not ok?... How do you respond with compassion? How do you help someone get the support they need? You can download the guide at https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day If you know a woman who is doing it tough right now, you can also tell them about Lous Place. 18.01.2022 It's Child Protection Week. This year's theme is "putting children first". What does it look like to put children first? Children need to be heard, protected and respected by adults in our society. We need to take abuse and neglect seriously. We need to act on their safety.... We also believe all children have a right to know their biological parents, even if they are living in foster care. We know that children have better outcomes when they have a good relationship with their biological parents. #childprotectionweek2020 #lousplace #sydney

18.01.2022 Why is there a World Homeless Day? The Inaugural World Homeless Day was marked on the 10th of October 2010. The purpose of this day is to draw attention to individuals who are experiencing homelessness needs locally and provide an opportunity for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness. ... How can you participate to make a difference? Here are a few steps: Educate people about homelessness Celebrate and support local good works Donate to local service providers Volunteer and provide hands-on help In recent years, research has shown that older women are the fastest growing demographic of homeless people in Australia With increasing housing costs and a significant gap in wealth accumulation between men and women, many elderly females are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness. Lou’s place strongly advocates for women who are homeless, and believe that there is a need for more social housing and services that support women experiencing trauma At Lou’s place, we are passionate about providing a safe and welcoming place for all women including individuals who are facing issues of homelessness #worldhomelessday #lousplace #sydney #10thOct #makeadifference #home

14.01.2022 Proposed changes to the NSW Victims Support Scheme will deny victims-survivors of violence access to the supports they have a right to and need. Weve joined over 80 organisations and 370 individuals calling on the Commissioner Victims Rights to scrap these regressive reforms. Together, we represent the voices of thousands of victims-survivors of violence in NSW, including victims-survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, child sexual abuse, those impacted ...by homicide and their families. Any changes to the Victims Support Scheme must be victim-survivor led. We call for the comprehensive statutory review of the Victims Support Scheme to commence immediately with proper consultation. 14.01.2022 The Victims Rights Commissioner has proposed changes to Victims Support which will deny victims-survivors of crime the supports they have a right to and need. 13.01.2022 Did you know Indigenous children make up 40 percent of all children in NSW state care? Last week the Australian government announced a small (and long overdue) step in the right direction, introducing an Aboriginal Deputy Childrens Guardian. This was a recommendation from the Family Is Culture Report by Megan Davis. We call for all 125 recommendations from the report to be implemented. The system is broken and our First Nations people are bearing the brunt. Image credit: An...gela Wylie for The Sydney Morning Herald. #lousplace #outofhomecare #fostercare #aboriginalchildren

02.01.2022 In our work every day, Lous Place observes the ongoing impacts of 100s of years of racism, displacement and colonisation. Racism and mistreatment of our First Nations people occurs at a systemic level - from our government departments, in our prisons and through policing on our streets.
