24.01.2022 Colloidal silver- fad, friend or foe? Colloidal silver has been around for a long time, widely used as an antiseptic before the introduction of antibiotics, but has gained more popularity of late. It is a mixture of silver ions and nanoparticles suspended in water and is a clear, mostly tasteless liquid. There are no doubts as to its efficacy in topical applications, it is a powerful antimicrobial agent, potentially even against antibiotic-resistant MRSA bacteria. Colloida...l silver is used in hospitals in the treatment of burns, in wound dressings and coatings for medical devices and implants. Colloidal silver however is not TGA or even FDA approved for internal use. High dose or extended use can result in a condition called Agyria, which causes the skin to take on a blue discoloration. Is the body able to eliminate silver or does it accumulate? Is it dose dependent? It can also interfere with certain drugs, namely antibiotics and thyroid medication. Silver’s antimicrobial action involves the ability to perforate the cell wall and inhibit the respiratory and replication cycles and metabolic pathways. So perhaps it can also have that effect on our microbiome or beneficial bacteria if consumed for a period of time? Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, tinea and acne can find benefit from topical application of colloidal silver, and I have seen first hand the miraculous overnight recovery of severe sunburn.
