09.01.2022 WHEN LESS IS MORE Perioral Dermatitis Before & After Perioral is a reactive, inflammatory skin condition situated around the mouth & chin area sometimes travelling up towards the nose & even the eye area (periocular). ... The irritation appears like small, red vesicles/bumps on the skin resembling congestion (but it definitely isnt so dont pick at them) The bumps are generally surrounded by a red rash & irritated, dry skin that can be quite compromised & sensitive! While the cause is still unknown the condition is attributed to chronic stress, (high cortisol levels), hormonal imbalances, gut health issues (leaky gut, sibo, candida) liver/detoxification issues, gluten intolerances, pro inflammatory diet, topical use of steroids or topical irritants/fragrances, SLS in skin care, over feeding the skin potent active ingredients & even fluoride from tooth paste! UV damage, hormones, hormonal medication, skin injury, skin inflammation & autoimmune conditions are all responsible for the formation of pigmentation Once predisposed to hyperpigmentation, the mutated cells (damaged melanocytes) will continue to over produce melanin (pigment cells) which flood the epidermis creating a mottled, splotchy appearance, pigmentation can also form in the appearance of spots, patches, scattered freckles & pigmented scarring (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
