19.01.2022 'Today I got feeding support from the most unlikely of places, the most surreal moment of my life that had me in tears. I visited Schoenbrunn zoo in Vienna whil...st on a mini-break with my partner and son, we nipped in to see the orangutans at the end of our day who were happily playing in the enclosure so I went to the window for a closer look and sat down by the window so my lb could see the orangutan who was roughly 5/6ft away. She then got up, carried a piece of cloth to the window and sat down with me. She looked directly into my eyes then placed her hand up as if to touch my son I was in awe of this beautiful creature already. My son wanted feeding and as it was quiet I fed him whilst I sat there, the way the orangutan reacted took my breath away she kept looking at me, then my son then back again. She sat with me for approximately half an hour, kept stroking the glass and lay down next to me as if to support and protect me. I had to share this because my mind was blown, we may be a species apart but breastfeeding connected us today in a once in a lifetime moment that will stay with me forever. I'm also incredibly lucky that my partner caught all of this on video ' -Gemma Copeland Another incredibly interesting story: Did you know that women from La Leche League once taught a mother gorilla to breastfeed? The Mamma gorilla had been born and raised in captivity and didn't know what to do with her firstborn, and her baby sadly died. When she next became pregnant, breastfeeding women volunteered to sit beside the gorilla's enclosure and breastfeed their babies, showing the gorilla what to do. When the gorilla gave birth, a volunteer came over and breastfed her baby, showing Mamma gorilla what to do, step by step. Mamma gorilla watched, and then copied, and went on to successfully feed her baby <3 EDIT: PLEASE READ Gemma is passionate about animal welfare and her experience with this beautiful Mamma Orangutan has inspired her to raise money for the Borneo Orangutan Rescue at International Animal Rescue. This wonderful charity provides a sanctuary for baby orangutans who have been subjected to capture and abuse by humans. They work hard to rehabilitate the orangutans and release them into the wild, so that they may live the rest of their lives in peace and freedom. Click the 'donate' button if you'd like to get involved. Every penny helps! You can learn more about the Borneo Orangutan Rescue, here: https://www.internationalanimalrescue.org/orangutan-sanctua

14.01.2022 In life there are many people that have a fire burning within to change and heal the world, but it is only the few that truly do. When we have an exceptional a...nd burning woman come to the world with a new paradigm and spreads an idea that challenges the status quo, they cause unrest with those comfortable, but importantly they touch the hearts of those that need the message most, and through their vision and unapologetic philosophy, they shift and shake a culture to wake up a part of people (or women) that has been forgotten or taken away. Mickey has been that burning woman, that in previous times, may have been burned at the stake for her beliefs and determination to spread the message and truth of the normalcy of birth. It took thick skin, courage, determination and a strong belief to spread this message, 1 family at a time. Over the years as a practitioner I had sometimes seen Mickeys strength or filter-less views as harsh, but began to realise that this is the reason that she has managed to impact so many people, and how she has managed to prevent so many thousands of women from living with birth trauma. Through working with Mickey as a Faculty member I saw that this intelligent, kind, soft hearted and authentic woman was not only changing the history of birthing, but also impacting first chapters of childrens lives with the gift of conscious, empowered parents, that is giving each of these children the chance to continue to write their stories with these lessons imprinted at a cellular level. The extent of the impact and ripple effect that she has had will never truly be known, and almost too great to fathom. To Maura and all the family, thank you for sharing her with us. Our thoughts are with you as you adjust your lives without her, but I hope you take great comfort and pride in knowing that the world is mourning her and we will all be forever changed by her vision. Mickey is now an integral part of the history of birth, as she is a part of all of us who have known her and been touched by her message and incredible program of positive birth. 13.01.2022 Support! It’s crucial and it comes in many forms #repost @blossomingbelliesbirth What a great reminder from @littleenginebirths of all the ways people off...er support and contribute to well-being in the postpartum Feeling cared for is a combination of many things; sometimes it’s just a smile and have a great day from a familiar face that helps to keep us grounded. #thisisyourbirth #healthypostpartum #blossomingbellies Posted @withregram @littleenginebirths There's a reason parents get to know the workers who deliver packages to their home!! Those people play a valuable role in their postpartum lives, especially during Covid times when we may rely on home delivery even more. When you're planning for the immediate postpartum period, think about ALL of the people who may support you during that time and the ways you may be able to prepare for a gentler transition to parenthood. Consider adding funds to your FSA that may cover postpartum doula services, chiropractic care, massage therapy, or anything else that is not covered by your regular insurance. If you don't have an FSA, request gift cards for these services on your baby registry! Ask a close friend or family member to set up a meal train for your first 2-4 weeks postpartum. Even if all meals are not taken care of, having the guarantee that you don't have to worry about several meals that week is priceless! Even if you've never used a dog walker before, having someone give your pup some love and attention, as well as an energy release, will ensure a smooth transition for your pup to being a furry sibling :) and take the pressure off of you to take long walks before you're ready. And if you are having a bit of difficulty with theadjustment, ask your doula or pediatrician for a list of new parent support groups, recommended lactation consultants, and mental health clinicians specializing in postpartum services. These services are still available virtually during Covid and may be back to in-person support in your area too! . . . #postpartumcare #postpartum #postpartumisforever #newbaby #expecting #postpartumdoula #doula #doulalife #babyregistry #pregnancy #newparents #gentlepostpartum #phillydo

13.01.2022 It's Birth Trauma Awareness Week. So we want to raise awareness that ideal birth outcomes are NOT just about delivery of a healthy baby. Never, never say to a... mother, "at least the baby is healthy". Please never be dismissive of a mothers painful birth experience. A birth experience for a mother (AND the witnessing partner) leaves an imprint that can forever change their lives and impact on the health and wellbeing of the entire family. Terror, shame, embarrassment, fear, guilt, helplessness simply should not be words we have to use to describe birth experiences. But unfortunately for many mothers, this is the case. 1 in 3 women describe their birth as traumatic. Birth Trauma can be both physical and psychological trauma and can be a contributing factor to perinatal mental illnesses, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Postnatal Depression and Anxiety and Postnatal OCD. Peach Tree provides a safe space for mothers who have experienced birth trauma to come, and know they are not alone in their experiences and to seek help.

01.01.2022 SO WHAT IS THE BREAST CRAWL? AND is it widely performed only among home births? (SWIPE TO VIEW chronological photo-story of a breastcrawl) Breast crawl is ...the instinct of mammal newborns to move towards the nipple and attach to it for breastfeeding all by themselves. In humans, if the newborn baby is put on the mother's abdomen, the movements start 12 to 44 minutes after birth, followed by spontaneous suckling at 27 to 71 minutes after birth. (source: Selected Topics in Obstetrics and Gynaecology-4: For Postgraudate and Practitioners p. 281) According to a study published in August of 2012 in the Journal of Perinatology to determine the impact of the breast crawl on breastfeeding in a busy labor room, researchers randomly selected candidates to participate and compared to a group where breast crawl was not performed. They discovered in their results that breast crawl had a SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE IMPACT on the onset of lactation as well as extent of neonatal weight loss on day 3. Feel free to DM for link to study! But what about the role of breast crawl in maternal health and wellbeing? I found another interesting study conducted on 200 research cases in a hospital's labor and delivery where they found initiation of breast-feeding within hour of birth is very crucial. Every newborn, when placed on the mothers abdomen, soon after birth, has the capability to find the mothers breast all on their own & to decide when to take the first breast feed this is known as breast crawl. Results: Out of 200 full term babies, 166 babies able to successfully crawl within in 50 min. Out of 166 breast crawl mothers95.% mothers had early expulsion of placenta. 96% mothers had decrease in uterine size. 93% mother had no anemia in post partum period of same pregnancy. Happy to share the link to this study via DM as well. In any case, whether this is an obsolete medical practice or simply has a placebo effect, I think it is safe to say the results seem to present as positive on both mental and physical health Repost by @psplechta_birthphotography #breastcrawl #liquidgoldmama#latching#infantsleep #breastfeedingmama @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia See more
