25.01.2022 Did you know... World Diabetes Day was dated after the birth date of Sir Frederick Banting (14 November), who with Charles Best discovered insulin and its use a...s a treatment? During Banting's time, research had indicated that lack of insulin caused the accumulation of sugar in the blood and excess sugar in the urine. To remedy this, patients that were lacking insulin were fed fresh pancreas or extracts of it - but this failed as the insulin would be destroyed in the process. Banting and Best led experiments on extracting insulin from the pancreas. One experiment led to thousands of islet cells being left behind and from these insulin was extracted. Both were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine in 1923. Banting died in 1941 while serving in World War II. In 1989, the Queen Mother lit a flame of hope in his honour and to acknowledge all whose lives were affected by diabetes. The flame still burns today at Banting House and will only be extinguished when a cure for diabetes is discovered. #WDD15
