25.01.2022 PLAYER OF THE WEEK! Name: Michael Profession: Pro Nerd Hobbies: Radio production; Noise making gadgets; Maths. ... 1) Do you have a comedy, theatre or performance background (acting, comedian, dancer, singer ect..)? I have done a lot of improv music/sound art/noise/sound poetry performance. 2) What got you interested in improv? I was doing improv music and improv dance, and then tried some scripted theatre, where I discovered that I can barely remember what I was saying from one end of a sentence to.. where was I? - therefore improv. 3) What made you decide to do improv classes? I learned from improv music classes that there is always more to learn about making shit up as you go along. Also, for the socialising. 4) How long have you been improvising? Oh, is that a birthmark? - how long have you had it? but sound (& sometimes words) on an actual stage since the mid-1990s; theatre workshops on & off from about 2003, but this kind of improv just a year or so. 5) What is your favourite improv warm up game and why? I quite like the phrase-at-a-time games because I like the way they wander off into alternate realities. 6) What is your favourite improv format and why? Quadrant/Revolver, (although I think it works better in person). It just somehow produces entertaining scenes. 7) What has improv brought to your life? Some challenge, interaction, and fun to look forward to in my week. Connection in disconnected times, and that was even before the spiky demon virus thing. 8) Have any skills you have learnt in improv improved other areas of your life? I’m mostly quite a solitary beast, so improv has improved my conversation and socialising skills. Can I take this paper bag off my head now? 9) Who are your favourite improvisers (famous or non-famous)? Tony Osborne, Alan Schacher (both based in Syd). 10) What has been your biggest joy and biggest challenge doing improv? Biggest joy probably some of the Improv Cafe nights. Biggest challenge maybe the more extended scenes in the Improv Hub Character Workshop.
25.01.2022 PLAYER OF THE WEEK!! :) Name: Cath Profession: semi-retired + Uni student + Community Worker extraordinaire Hobbies: kayaking. Biking. Camping gardening and staying active.... 1) Do you have a comedy, theatre or performance background (acting, comedian, dancer, singer ect..)? 6th grade school play. Playing a mum in a beach scene. Audience laughed. Loved it and wanted to act but never pursued drama/acting. Seemed too hard. I realise now I had no filter at 11 years old! No fear! Believed in myself..... No overthinking. Improv. 2) What got you interested in improv? A chance to play with acting, without actually committing to acting. 3) What made you decide to do improv classes? Innocence in what I was doing as a foray into drama/ comedy and that I didn't have to join a course just do a drop in! 4) How long have you been improvising? Since Sheprov started. 18mths? 5) What is your favourite improv warm up game and why? ‘3 things that go’... cause its easy....lol. 6) What is your favourite improv format and why? Probably the pesky panel of professionals (The Expert). Cause it brings out the big guns and big effort. Everyone seems to drop into serious ‘pro’ mode and come up with such hilarious ingenious animal behaviour. 7) What has improv brought to your life? A Thursday night out with girls (Sheprov) and a seriously fun night full of belly laughs with amazing children.... I mean women that I don't even really know! 8 Have any skills you have learnt in improv improved other areas of your life? Yes. I am always thinking that I can improvise my way out of any situation! I dream about having fun and how life is way too serious mostly. I observe my improv skills getting more relaxing and fun. I am not so anxious. So, I think I am more confident about having a go and not knowing what is going on is kinda fun. 9) Who are your favourite improvisers (famous or non-famous)? ‘Have you been paying attention Sam?’ and Celia Pasquale. The guys on ‘Whose line is it anyway’.... Wayne Grady and the other tall guy. 10) What has been your biggest joy and biggest challenge doing improv? It is Joyful doing scenes that are fun and seem to work well! Challenge is doing movie scenes in quadrant (revolver) and making them make sense and work!!
24.01.2022 PLAYER OF THE WEEK! Name: Michael David Profession: Retail Manager in exile, Singer, musician, Dad Hobbies: Guitar, ukulele, comedy, reading and hosting my own personal Ted talks to unwitting audiences. ... 1) Do you have a comedy, theatre or performance background (acting, comedian, dancer, singer ect..)? A few gigs and weddings over the years. 2) What got you interested in improv? I've always loved comedy and watching people improv seemed to be the pinnacle. I've secretly wanted to do it for years but was scared. 3) What made you decide to do improv classes? Recently learning to conquer my fears and stage fright, and finding Lindsay's improv hub aligned the stars and I jumped in. 4) How long have you been improvising? About a year now (slightly Covid interrupted) 5) What is your favourite improv warm up game and why? Three things that, I'm gonna need and any word at a time game. I really like the unpredictability and being forced to stay in the moment. 6) What is your favourite improv format and why? Probably short form scenes because I like the quick back and forth and more room for punchlines :) 7) What has improv brought to your life? More confidence in front of people and Lindsay's workshops are better than any therapy I've ever had. 8) Have any skills you have learnt in improv improved other areas of your life? See above. All of them. <3 9) Who are your favourite improvisers (famous or non-famous)? Lindsay Drummond, our Nambour group, Wayne Brady, Colon Mochrie.... So many I can't remember right now. 10) What has been your biggest joy and biggest challenge doing improv? Joy is the people I've met and play with. And all the laughs (and tears at least once). Challenging myself to improve improv in life and play. Taking all I've learnt across to my music performances and getting out and heard.
