24.01.2022 Been a very busy week here at Low Key! Progress on the small block is going very well, heads have been torqued down to 70 ft lb using new ARP head bolts, Crow Cam solid flat tappet lifters installed, as well as new Comp Camps 7/16" pushrods. We also went ahead and installed new Dart 7/16" rocker studs and pushrod retainer plates, and placed our Yella Terra Roller Rockers on and checked our fitment. Everything looks spot on, but unfortunately ran outta time before we could dia...l in the valve lash. We also have an XR6 turbo in for a few modifications. These include new Crow Cam Heavy Duty Valve Springs, Empire Performance Head Studs and new timing guides installed from a later model FG Falcon. Other mods we previously done to this was a new billet fuel rail 1000cc Raceworks Injectors, rising rate fuel pressure regulator, a Walbro 460lph fuel pump and a Turbosmart Turbo Actuator. Once we have everything back together, were gonna go ahead and tune this vehicle to e85 and see what improvements we make in response, as well as top end power. Stay Tuned!
23.01.2022 After a minor oil leak issue was fixed and TH400 Trans topped up it was time to see this mighty F6 move under its own power for the first time. Still a long ways to go yet, brakes need to be bled from sitting and we still need to carry out a custom diff hat/rear subframe modification, but very happy with the way things are at the moment. Will be ready to see a dyno VERY soon and were anxious to see the power output of this beast
23.01.2022 Pre Assembly has begun on the SBC 350. Clearances have been checked with the new ARP Main Stud Kit and ACL Race Bearings, and have come up absolutely perfect across the board. Crank has been polished, and slight tweaks have been made to the block and crank to allow for better oiling at high rpm. 20.01.2022 A long time coming, been at this project for just under two years now with Danial Nancarrow and Daniel Vredenburg, and today we had our first start up. Not running full 100%, and still have a few issues we need to sort out by all together a big accomplishment. #project1 #lowkeyperformanceandmechanical #barratheworld
19.01.2022 Spent most of the weekend problem solving this Barra. The problem it was experiencing was a lack of throttle response and lack of torque throughout the low to mid range of the rpm curve, as well as the inability to idle correctly on deceleration. We stripped the top end apart to investigate, and found that the Vernier Cam Gears had slipped on the Exhaust Cam and Inlet Cam causing a ten degree exhaust retard and a 6 degree intake advance. This had thrown the tune way off, as w...ell as skyrocketing egts as the exhaust valves are opening way too late causing a massive increase in valve overlap. We rectified this by zeroing in the cams, removing the soft, cheap aluminium washers from the vernier gears and tightening the lock bolts washerless with Loctite Stud Lock 216 to ensure they would never slip again. After that we went ahead and improved the valve system by installing Atomic Rocker Arms Atomic Anti-Pump Up Lifters Atomic Anchorlox Exhaust Manifold Studs and Nuts We replaced all these items due to the factory ones being very heavily worn, and excessive wear was shown on the rocker arms due to the Crow Cams 282 degree camshafts installed. After we were happy with the top end setup, we put her all back together then took her for a drive, while obviously logging boost readings and map readings to the see the difference. The difference was a massive improvement in low down response, a substantial increase in mid range and top end torque, which resulted in the clutch saying no more, as well as lower egts which improved the engines ability to cool down. Still not perfect, as the datalog was showing the intercooler efficiency was not up to par with the power being generated, which also results in a higher then normal engine coolant temperature. The smile on the customers face when he took it for a drive after the repairs was enough for me to say that his setup has been greatly improved, and after a clutch replacement, she'll be ready for the dyno to do some power runs!
14.01.2022 Bit more progress on the 350 small block. All rings have been gapped to a specific tolerance, oil returns have been modified as well as a slight chamfer put into the dizzy hole and the oil feed on the main thrust bearing has been ported out, and the new Crow Cam 292/295 Solid Flat Tappet Camshaft 109 LSA has been dialed in. Very important dialling in a camshaft as big as this, as most performance camshafts have at least a 4 degree ground in advance and require the lift to be ...checked at .050 thou to determine if the intake valve is opening up at the correct time. Next up is a very thorough clean of the deck surface, head and head gasket installation, pushrod installation and the Yella Terra roller rockers installed to a 0.018" valve lash respectively. 08.01.2022 Out with the old in with the new! The Low Key R33 has been experiencing some heat soak issues with the coil packs after a bit of spirited driving, so we went ahead and installed a BPP R35 Plug and Play Coil Conversion kit courtesy of Goleby's Parts. Installation was a breeze and has improved the Skylines spark capability quite a bit! We also went ahead and carried out some repairs on the exhaust side as it had a large exhaust leak which was reducing performance considerably. Couple more bits and pieces and she'll be back on the road
