24.01.2022 Any ideas on how much sugar you're eating each day? It's fair to say that many people have little idea and they're not the least bit interested. This standpoint is totally okay. Many of us are happy to live in blissful ignorance. Admittedly, there will come a time in which it catches up to us, but this is not something we have to worry about now.... On the flip side, for many people, becoming a parent signifies an era where there is a significant rise in the "care factor". As parents, we're no longer happy bury our heads in the sand. We know that the food on the supermarket shelf is very different to what we ate as kids and we're now was worried about the impact that our "lack of knowledge" and subsequent decisions have on our children. So if you are interested, it mightn't hurt to read on.. Here's a bit of an insight in the state of our sugar consumption... The 2012 report "Sugar Consumption in Australia: A Statistical Updade" claims the average Aussie is having over 27 teaspoons of sugar a day. This number will mean different things for different people. Some will be appalled and call for the cutting out of sugar from our diets, while others will claim that everything in moderation is okay. So this raises the next question. Naturally, we can't cut it out completely, but how much sugar should we consume? What is considered healthy? What is considered moderate? Well this is where things get REALLY interesting. Recently, the World Health Organisation (the WHO) - in case you didn't know, these guys are the authority on all health issues occurring across the United Nations' system - made a radical move in suggesting intake should be less than 10% of our total intake. They made the further suggestion that a reduction to 5% would have added health benefits. What is this in teaspoons? SIX TEASPOONS OF SUGAR A DAY. So what does six teaspoons of sugar look like? Here's a bit of a starting point; - 1 bottle (500ml) of sports drink (Gatorade/Powerade) is 7 teaspoons - 1 glass (250ml) of fruit juice is 6 teaspoons - 1 muesli bar (I've used a "Be Natural" 50g as an example) is 4 teaspoons - 1 x 50g serving of Nutri-grain (measure this out to see how small it really is) is 4 teaspoons - 1 x 50g serving of Kellogs Crunchy Nuts is 4 teaspoons - the list goes on and on and on and on... According to the World Health Organisation, the ideal sugar intake we should aim for can be consumed with 1 glass of fruit juice or with 1 regular serving of our favourite breakfast cereal. Rest assured the impact of these recommendations will trickle on, but it may take some time.
