25.01.2022 Thursday Nights Halifax 18:30 hrs This Thursday 17th September is a great night to get into. John Forde will be coming up and putting the group through 3 of the... induction courses that are needed to be done by every member. Don't miss this opportunity to get this done with the group or you will have to do it yourself as online learning, much easier to do as a group. Those who still have forms to sign up or want forms to sign up also come alone Thursday 17th September and join in.

22.01.2022 LIGHT UP LOWER HERBERT EVENT There is no doubt that Blue Light Hinchinbrook Branch did their part to Light up Lower Herbert in blue last night supporting Hinch...inbrook Shire Council’s Community event. Our Branch volunteers did a tremendous job selling food and drinks on the night. Not only did our members work tirelessly last night, but some started cooking and preparation earlier in the day to ensure food was ready. The food was a sell out with the food line up continuing well after we sold out. Not even the rain stopped them, many back soaking wet lining up again. The mince buns were a hit, with hot dogs, donuts, fairy floss and popcorn on the menu also. Blue Light Hinchinbrook Branch an amazing team coming together to raise funds for our youth. A few missing from our group photo, apologies, however we had to take the photo before doors opened as there was no stopping afterwards. You are truely an amazing bunch of people. See more

12.01.2022 Some preparation tonight for our cadets with a field exercise in two weeks time. Just enough information out tonight to get them thinking. Recently two of our cadets (now one Adult leader) participated in the SES Exercise in Ingham. A big thank you from SES HQ in Townsville with each receiving an official SES back pack. What a great bit of gear it is too. Good work Cadet Mary Rose and Adult Leader Nathan. Your help on the day was grately appreciated I’m told.

12.01.2022 Watch out for turtles Be advised: Hinchinbrook Shire Council has erected signs on all major beach accesses asking residents and visitors to report any signs o...f turtle nesting to council. Our beaches are privileged to have both Green and Flatback Turtles nest frequently along our shorelines, and council wants to gather as much data on these species as possible. Between November and January, nesting Green and Flatback Turtles lay about 50 and 100 eggs per clutch respectively and may nest more than once per season. Hatching occurs approximately 12 weeks later (January to April), where the hatchlings migrate out to sea and hopefully return some 30 years later to breed themselves. If you see a nesting turtle on the beach, or even evidence of their tracks from the night before, council is asking you to report as much information as possible on the location to allow officers to manage and monitor the site until it hatches. Residents are encouraged to gather information on the GPS location, take a photo of the nesting site and/or tracks, with some obvious landmark in the photo. This allows officers to record and monitor the situation. Alternatively, sightings can be logged through the ‘Eye on the Reef’ app, using the ‘Sightings’ tab. You can add a photo, mark the GPS location and make comments about the turtle or nesting sight. This data adds directly to Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s collaborative citizen science programs about the reef. Nesting sea turtle sites can be reported to council on 4776 4740.

07.01.2022 Stinger Warning A lady fishing in the swing basin where the barges moor at Lucinda this morning, got a nasty surprise when wiping what she thought was weed off ...her line, only to be stung by a trailing tentacle from a box jellyfish. Please be aware that the stingers are here much earlier than normal this year, let others know about it, and carry vinegar with you when on the water to neutralize any stings. Also be very careful when throwing cast nets for bait, as you may catch tentacles in the net, and avoid wading in the shallows. Stay safe on the water. See more

07.01.2022 DISASTER PREPARATION AWARENESS AT COMMUNITY EVENT IN HALIFAX Last night SES personnel from Townsville and Ingham assisted with the Lower Herbert Community Disaster Awareness stall at the Light Up Lower Herbert event. Each year the Lower Herbert Disaster Management Sub-Group (Sub-LDMG) holds a community information event prior to our disaster season. We have well and truely entered that time of year when we should have plans in place and preparation commenced. It was great to see so many people walking out with the information sachets, many running out of the rain with their information packages in hand. Thank you to Emergency Services, Townsville SES personnel, Ingham SES personnel, Halifax SES personnel and Townsville SES HQ for your valuable assistance.

03.01.2022 National Police Remembrance Day 2020. We will remember them. Today NPRD 2020 was held in the Lower Herbert for the very first time. Due to restrictions, only a limited number of attendees were permitted and sadly many people from our community were unable to attend. However, Halifax QPS personnel and retired police from the district were joined by representatives from emergency services and support agencies to remember fallen officers. It was a pleasure to unite with these great people for this event. Thank you to those who assisted with running this event and those who come together today. You made it something that will never be forgotten. The opportunity was also taken to present Administration Officer Anita Spencer with her 20 year service medal. Thank you for your dedication and diligent service. Something I see every week.

01.01.2022 A split-second decision by Halifax acting Officer in Charge Alicia Locke to check on a resident completely changed the course of both their days and left a memo...ry that has touched the small Hinchinbrook community. On Tuesday, Alicia was driving down the street when she noticed an elderly gentleman, Jack, sitting on his lawn. When I approached Jack he’d been mowing the lawn, and being a touch wobbly on his feet had decided to sit down for a rest but couldn’t get up, Alicia said. As Alicia completed some basic assessments to ensure Jack was OK, she learnt that he was a former police officer with a career spanning over 35 years. She replied that her father was also a former officer and that she was heading to the police remembrance ceremony later that day. Come that afternoon, Alicia had the surprise of her life when she answered the station door and was met by Jack, all dressed up. Due to his health, Jack had been resigned to the fact he would not be able to attend an annual police remembrance ceremony for the first time. But because of their fateful meeting that morning, he had an opportunity to attend the service and Alicia was more than happy to lend a helping hand. Jack was incredibly thankful that I was there to help him safely walk around and help him stand for the moments silence, but it was me who was honoured to stand next to him and hold his hand, she said. Fate clearly had it lined up for us to meet that morning, and it has sprung a lovely friendship that will no doubt last the rest of our lifetimes. This act of kindness didn’t go unnoticed at the ceremony with attendees writing in to us with positive comments. Our staff often go above and beyond to care for their community outside of a clinical setting and we’re pleased to share Alicia and Jack's beautiful story.
