24.01.2022 Lower Blackwood LCDC talks to Nicole Masters. We are delighted to make available to you by podcast a recent conversation we had with New Zealand agroecologist, educator & systems thinker Nicole Masters. In our conversation with Nicole we took a dive into her recently published book 'For the Love of Soil', to take a closer look at the what, why & how to approach one or two of the common soil issues facing farmers in the south west air (lack of) & water (too much or too little). 19.01.2022 IF BAITING Use only less harmful baits with active ingredients COUMATETRALYL or WARFARIN Some of the most common rat baits are lethal to Masked Owls and other wildlife through ‘secondary poisoning’ from their baited prey. > USE traps rather than baits to control rats and mice without harming wildlife. > USE only the less harmful baits containing the active ingredient coumatetralyl (e.g. Racumin) or warfarin and carefully follow package instructions.... > DO NOT USE ‘second generation anticoagulant rodenticides’ with difenacoum, brodifacoum, bromadiolone or difethialone. > Take great care with storing and placing baits so that pets and wildlife such as possums in your garden can’t reach them. > Live traps rather than lethal traps enable release of any unintended wildlife captures. 16.01.2022 WA case studies make for some interesting reading.. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has worked with farmers to document their use of regenerative agriculture practices in Western Australia. Farmer experience and the lessons learnt can help other farmers make decisions about adopting these practices. We supply these case studies to share the experience and observations of farmers practising regenerative agriculture. We recommend that you make your own assessment of any documented practices, to suit your conditions, before making large investments. https://www.agric.wa.gov.au//regenerative-agriculture-case

15.01.2022 It's a Wrap! Last month's Talkin After Hours live webinar - Steps to Revegetate Areas of your Farm Successfully, was a comprehensive overview on how to do it right! Presented by Brook Devine from Cape Life, participants were given a very thorough insight into:... what the key steps are for a successful revegetation program what factors to take into account when selecting a site(s) how to make the right species selection for their chosen site(s) how to prepare a site for planting success the best method for planting their selected species what is required to maintain the health of plants while they establish & beyond. The key takeaway message was however quite simple..plan, plan, plan! Missed the presentation? Don't worry - we recorded it, so grab a coffee, settle yourself down and watch it here. https://youtu.be/FllFnhIe4QY

09.01.2022 COVID-19 has highlighted the vulnerabilities of global and national food systems. Even as Australia was repeatedly reassured of the security of its food supply, in 2020 we’ve seen panic buying that emptied supermarket shelves, rising rates of unemployment and food insecurity, and a disproportionately affected migrant seasonal workforce. With the critical challenges of climate change at our doorstep, and rapidly rising costs of dietary-related ill-health, the integrity of our ...food and farming systems demands our attention. This December, we will, for the first time, have the opportunity to learn directly from the leaders of the organisation responsible for the implementation of the Vermont Farm to Plate planby many accounts one of the most comprehensive and long-term food and farming system programs of its kind. Across three weekly webinars, Director Jake Claro and Network Manager Sarah Danly will discuss how the decade-old program has successfully increased employment, business creation and food security through collaborative, whole-of-system actions and networking, aligned to a shared agenda of a better food and farming system for Vermont. They will be joined by practitioners and policy makers from across Australia who will share state and local initiatives, and discuss how the Vermont approach might be applied in our context. Everyone involved in food systems communities of practice including producers, policy-makers, food businesses, community organisations, statutory and strategic planners, health service professionals, sustainability professionals, food security organisations and networks, educators and researchersis invited to attend. https://sustain.org.au/articles/2020-vermont-f2p-webinar

06.01.2022 The Understory - a cascade of colour & a channel for carbon Everyone loves flowers don't they? According to Dr Christine Jones fruit trees love flowers too, or more precisely, the soil biology under them love flowers. Here's why:... Every kind of plant supports a different suite of microbes. Optimal plant function is achieved through ‘root mingling’ in the sociobiome created by many different kinds of plants growing in close proximity. This diversity of genetic material enables plant communities to thrive, even under less than ideal conditions. In an orchard scenario a wide range of herbs and flowers can be grown under fruit trees. Although most plants will not grow as well in shade as they would in full sun, they will grow. Remember, you’re doing this for the benefit of the tree. https://www.diggers.com.au//ORNAM/UNDERPLANTING-ORCHARDS/

06.01.2022 Dairy Farmers..in fact all graziers.. get more of this in your paddocks! Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a deep rooted summer-active, short-term (24 years) perennial herb with potential to provide high-quality summer forage for grazing on southern Australian dairy farms. What's not to like?... Reliable summer growth, even with low rainfall, due to its deep taproot system. High nutritive characteristics when grazed (+12 MJ ME/kg DM and up to 25% DM crude protein). Role as 1 or 2-year summer crop in pasture renovation programs that allows a seamless return to grazing. Role as 2 to 4-year perennial crop (or more if allowed to self-seed) that can beoversown with cereals, annual or perennial grasses. Less susceptible to insect damage than many other forages. Typical pasture pests such as lucerne flea, slugs and red legged earth mite could have some impact during early establishment. No major risks to animal health Has a number of desirable features in common with Lucerne, but is adapted to a much broader range of soil types Get the full facts here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/c58zzo4bc5/Chicory%20%281%29.pdf
