24.01.2022 WaterNSW has issued a red alert for blue-green algae (BGA) in the Murray River between the Mildura Marina and Wentworth. A red alert is also in place at Mount Dispersion. The red alert has been lifted between the Red Cliffs Water Treatment Plant and the Mildura Marina. A red alert level warning indicates people should not undertake recreational activities where they may be coming into direct contact with the water such as swimming, as well as domestic uses including showe...ring and washing. Contact with the water may also pose a threat to livestock and pets. Warning signs will be positioned at recreational sites within the red alert level areas. Drinking water supplies are not affected as BGA toxins are removed by the treatment processes at water treatment plants in urban areas. People should not eat mussels or crayfish from red alert warning areas. Any fish caught should be cleaned and washed thoroughly in uncontaminated water and any internal organs disposed of before consumption. LMW rural customers in Merbein (irrigation or non-consumptive domestic & stock customers - i.e. raw water supply) are advised to isolate tank supplies. LMW rural customers can register to receive SMS updates on BGA as the situation changes in their area by contacting our Mildura office on 03 5051 3400 or via WaterNow (online water ordering) at https://waterorder.lmw.vic.gov.au/default1.asp. We will text customers when BGA is detected in their area and only again when levels reduce and red alerts have been lifted. A map of the current warnings is available on our website www.lmw.vic.gov.au/blue-green-algae/
