25.01.2022 - , , Good biosecurity is all about minimising the risk of introducing or spreading a pest, weed or dis...ease to or from your farm. Implementing a ' , ' policy will help to minimise the risk and should include: having at least one signed entry point on your farm to control visitor entry and offer a designated parking spot, keeping a visitor register and record if and where they and/or their vehicles have recently travelled and consider whether they may pose a risk by introducing unwanted pests or disease, and washing down vehicles and machinery as they enter and leave production zones. If you want to know more about how you can minimise the risk of pest and disease incursion on your farm, contact Pene or Emily through the Livestock SA office. In fact, you don't even have to leave home, making it the ultimate Covid-safe activity! To take part all you need is 20 minutes and your favourite outdoor space. Not only will you be contributing to BirdLife Australia's knowledge of Aussie birds, but there are also some great prizes on offer. Head over to the Aussie Backyard Bird Count website and register as a Counter today! https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ The yearly bird count gives us a snapshot in time of bird numbers around the nation so if you’ve participated before and are raring to go remember the app doesn’t kick in until the count begins on 19 October (one month to go!). #AussieBirdCount See more

16.01.2022 Support ground-breaking research to help conserve Australia’s best-loved species through the International Koala Centre of Excellence! During the summer bushfir...es, twenty-eight koalas were rescued from Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on Kangaroo Island. As animals free of the two most significant infective diseases Chlamydia and Koala Retrovirus that plague Australian mainland koalas, the rescued colony is vital for understanding, managing and treating these diseases. 14.01.2022 Some time ago the Loxton Recreation Grounds Committee successfully installed 21 bird nesting boxes throughout Heritage Park to encourage breeding of the Regent ...Parrot, of which approx 75% are currently being used At the November meeting, the LRGC agreed to install 13 more nesting boxes throughout town to encourage breeding of the Yellow Rosella Parrot. The Rosellas are very common around here, have one mate and lay 3-5 eggs which take 19 days to hatch. All the nesting boxes are made by the awesome guys at the Loxton Community Men's Shed. deep enough to deter small birds, have chicken wire attached inside to allow the young to climb out, have saw dust, wood chips & debris in the bottom and face north-east for weather protection. 08.01.2022 Do you enjoy tinkering on DIY jobs to raise the energy efficiency rating (EER) of your home? On #SustainableHouseDay take a moment to appreciate the #Malleefow...l, one of the world’s hardest working birds, who spend up to 300 days a year tending to their nest mound with their powerful legs and sharp claws. Amazing dedication to create and maintain a mound that generates an optimum temperature to incubate eggs. A rangeland dweller with patchy distribution, Malleefowl were once found across much of the southern half of Australia, from the west coast to the Great Dividing Range. National priority actions are now underway with the support from a cohort of regional partners delivering nine Regional Land Partnerships projects targeting Malleefowl recovery in NSW, WA, SA and Victoria. Projects are monitoring active mounds, controlling feral predators including foxes and cats, as well as revegetation activities to restore suitable habitats. Our thanks to project partners Central West Local Land Services, Riverina Local Land Services, Wimmera CMA, Australian Wheatbelt Agriculture and Ecology Group, NACC, Rangelands NRM, Alinytjara Wilurara Landscape Board, Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, and Mallee Catchment Management Authority, in collaboration with the National Malleefowl Recovery Team through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. 01.01.2022 Introducing our 2020 research grant recipients! , a PhD candidate at The University of Adelaide, is exploring the adaptations and ecological signif...icance of the Mallee Riceflower in the arid zone. Jenna’s Nature Foundation Grand Start grant will support her field work at our Hiltaba Nature Reserve and fund laboratory testing of plant samples. Mallee Riceflower is dioecious, meaning that there are separate male and female plants, and Jenna will study plant-pollinator interactions in the species. Her project aims to support plant conservation and increase awareness of arid zone dioecious plants. : Photos by South Australian Seed Conservation Centre and supplied by Jenna Draper .
