23.01.2022 Cattle are typically assessed against three key attributes. The first is that they must be structurally sound; this is the skeletal system of the animal and other physical traits. This is the way the animal stands and walks looking at how their feet line up with no over-stepping or under-stepping by the hind feet, the structure of the legs, hips, shoulders and overall muscle volume. While these may be attractive traits, it also indicates the ability of the animal to walk f...or grazing and water, and carrying its own body weight without issue. These are often ideal traits in breeding stock. The second is maturity pattern and frame size; is the animal an ideal size for their age? Are they under or over? This often lines up with the breed of cattle, what type of country they are grazing in and their purpose. The third attribute is temperament; favoring a quiet temperament. (Source - Al Rayner)

The group often sells as many as 50,000 scones, tea and coffee products created by its members at the show each year, but has now opted to selling PDF recipes following a $5 donation for a plate of virtual scones. What will you be baking this long weekend? EDIT: If you want to give Muriels scones a go, make sure to use self-raising flour! Full recipe here: bit.ly/MurielScones

13.01.2022 Who has worked in the Young Exhibitors over the years? The Young Exhibitors have been a breeding ground for both entrants and volunteers in the show. People like Rob and Paul here have brought along their wives and children as judges and stewards; creating second and third generation participation in the section. Their kids have also brought along their friends and peers into the section. ... Over showtime, we have around 40 volunteers of judges and stewards for this section alone - lots of help for the 1200-1500 exhibits every year! Where are they now? Along with everything else they have accomplished: Paul Kaesler is now the Pavilion Convener and sits on the Executive Committee of the Society. Rob Schaefer, along with John Gladigau, are 'on the day' Conveners of the Young Exhibitors.

13.01.2022 The judge looks at a range of traits in assessing the animal: Evaluating the degree of finish the degree of muscling, the frame size and the stage of maturity. Assessing the structure and soundness of the animals the feet, hocks, knees, rumps and shoulders. The frame is evaluated by the length o...f the body and the height. How much weight is the sheep carrying, and are they the right size for their age. The ideal Merino will have a good fleece, straight back, wide well covered shoulders, strong legs and feet, thick chest, broad muzzle, medium head size and bright bold eyes.

09.01.2022 Fruit is judged on the uniformity of size and freedom from blemish on all specimens presented. Judges typically cut the produce to determine internal quality, and for flavour and texture. In citrus, judges are looking for shapely fruits of good even colour natural to the cultivar with bright, shiny skins. Thin skins are preferable with no scale insects.
