17.01.2022 REAL OR FAKE? Its a question we get asked a lot by our customers and here are our tips on spotting the fakes: 1. Pattern: a lot of the synthetic opals will just look "too good to be true". Theyll have a uniformity and a symmetry that is too perfect. Real opal will have differences in scale or patterning. Some fake opal will look like snake skin or will have columns of colour. 2. Colours: in one of these photos youll see an almost "smurf" blue stone. This type of synthetic ...opal is often seen being sold on the internet. This colour doesnt exist in real opal. Synthetic opal has a difference in brightness too. 3. Shape: most synthetics will be uniform in shape and will have colour all the way through. 4. Price: if you see a beautiful black opal, with lots of reds, bright colours and perfect pattern thats a bargain price...sorry, but its fake. Natural black opal with superb colour and pattern costs an arm and a leg. 5. Doublets and triplets: the nice thing about these is that theyre made from real white opal, but should never be sold to you as natural or black opal. Check the side of the stone to look for a really defined line between the backing and the opal slice. Always buy your opal from a reputable, dedicated opal dealer and make sure it comes with a guarantee. Now, lets see if you can spot the real vs. fakes from the photos (hint: only 2 are real).
