25.01.2022 Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has seen a recent increase in Q fever notifications. If you transport livestock, there may be a risk of Q fever. The best way to protect yourself is to be vaccinated against Q fever, and vaccination is recommended for those at occupational risk. High risk workplaces should have a Q fever vaccination program to protect their workers.... For more information, visit https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au//are-you-at-risk-of-q-feve

25.01.2022 TruckSafe is the only freight industry accreditation which addresses human safety factors and animal welfare - it's a best practice standard for trucking operators when transporting livestock. 25.01.2022 HEAVY VEHICLE REST AREAS STRENGTHENED The Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) has introduced new rules to ensure heavy vehicle specific rest areas are used for fatigue management only and require that heavy vehicle rest stop are only available for heavy vehicle drivers. The changes clarify the requirements for rest area use and camping on the state-controlled road network, including fines for light vehicle drivers using heavy vehicle-only areas.... Queensland Police and Transport Inspectors can issue fines, with TMR staff able to issue 'move on' orders - the minimum fine is $266 and maximum is $2669. Find out more about the new regulations and penalties for light vehicle drivers at www.qld.gov.au/restareas

20.01.2022 The LRTAQ welcomes the introduction of regulations designed to free up rest areas to allow heavy vehicle drivers to meet their rest obligations. Police and transport officers now have the power to issue move-on directives and fines of up to $2669 for cases of illegal campers and congestion in rest areas. LRTAQ Vice President Mark Collins told Rural Queensland Today that the announcement is a step in the right direction, but more funding is badly needed to develop more hard stand heavy vehicle rest areas.

20.01.2022 Have you ever been injured when loading or unloading livestock? How often do you experience a near miss? The Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association is conducting a National Survey about injuries to livestock loaders and unloaders and the incidence of injury reporting. You can help us by answering 10 anonymous questions online: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9ZR9FBX Your survey responses will help to establish national baseline data for a five year period. We... will be able to repeat the survey in future to determine trends in safety and reporting levels. The results of our survey may also influence facility owners to review safety, upgrade facilities or install new facilities to meet the recently published National Standard (AS 5340:2020) Livestock Loading Ramps and Forcing Pens. The survey will not ask for your personal name, business name or contact details. All data is anonymous, confidential and will be aggregated for statistical purposes. The ALRTA encourages all members to participate in the survey via the link below by Friday 26 March 2021: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9ZR9FBX

20.01.2022 Our South West Queensland Region Delegate David Scott (Scotts Haulage, Roma) recently explained to Ben Dobbin on Rural Queensland Today why the level of unnecessary risk associated with crushing, lacerations and slips, trips and falls at some facilities is no longer acceptable. Thank you David for sharing your story.

19.01.2022 The Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland) has advised that Lakes Creek Road, Rockhampton, will be temporarily closed to all vehicles and pedestrians at Frenchmans Creek from 7am Friday 30 October to 7am Monday 2 November 2020 for the replacement of Frenchman's Creek bridge. All B-doubles and vehicles over 4.3 metres will be diverted via Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road and Tanby Road. **Please also note that all double decker vehicles must use this Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road and Tanby Road detour, as the power lines on Elphinstone Street are not high enough.**

17.01.2022 Move-on directives and fines of up to $2669 are among the regulations aimed at helping heavy vehicle drivers better meet their legislated rest obligations. Livestock and Rural Transporters Association of Queensland president Gerard Johnson said it was an ongoing issue for his members, who found themselves unable to find enough space to stop in some rest areas when their regulated seven-hour rest period was due.

05.01.2022 With 30 years in the industry, our LRTAQ South West region delegate David Scott (Scotts Haulage) says while accidents can still happen in the best setups, all that is possible to prevent them should be done. He knows too well the consequences of complacency. The level of unnecessary risk associated with crushing, lacerations and slips, trips and falls at some facilities is no longer acceptable. A new national ramp standard has been developed based around control points to keep livestock and people separated and we need producers and saleyard operators to pay it serious attention.

02.01.2022 REGO REMOVED FROM CLASS 3 PERMITS From December 1, the NHVR will remove the requirement to include registration numbers from Class 3 Livestock Vehicle permits. Farmers can now apply for permits before calling a transport business, and the carrier can use the farmer’s permit without having to get their own. It also means that operators will no longer need to update all of their permits when purchasing new trucks and trailers.
