25.01.2022 #QOTD This one is something I wish all athletes appreciated All humans even Our body’s are capable of incredible things. Least of all looking great. I’m not pretending I don’t admire beauty. But running a new pb, smashing your personal goals, overcoming trauma, birthing a child into the world, starting from scratch again, beating illnesses, and committing every single day to keep honouring your body. THAT is the most inspiring thing. Focusing just on body image: or just on the scales will cost you more than anything else imaginable: regret Regret at missed opportunity, broken dreams & underperformance. If you’re struggling to move beyond the scales in order to improve your athletic performance: please reach out. Book a free chat via the link in bio, or shoot me a DM Your body is worth it. #lssnutrition #healthiswealth

24.01.2022 #QOTD Whatever goal you're currently working towards: you will inevitably come up against a challenge at some stage. Remembering your why is one of the most powerful tools for transformation. Utilise it! #lssnutrition #mindsetmatters

23.01.2022 We've all used the excuse 'but everyone else is the same' as a justification for our current condition. But let me highlight some stats for you: + 2/3 of Australians are overweight or obese + One in five Australians has a mental health condition + Half of Australian's have at least one chronic health condition (!) + Just 7.5% of Aussie adults eat the recommended serves of veggies daily... + Only 15% of adults meet the physical activity guidelines + One in six adults consumed 2 (or more) standard drinks every day: exceeding the lifetime risk guidelines. The list goes on. We have a lot of work to do to improve the health of our nation. Nutrition and lifestyle factors continue to play a significant role in improving health & reducing risk of further chronic disease. You have the power at any moment to turn your own stats around. Make the decision to look after yourself and your health. Because if you don't, who will? If you need helping getting out of the rut, join my 30 days to YOUR best self program (link in bio). #lssnutrition #healthiswealth See more

20.01.2022 Have you ever been told you don’t look like an athlete? Have you ever been told you used to look fitter? Have you ever been so focused on looking the part, that you lost focus on actually being the part? Have you ever covered yourself in fake tan so that your muscle definition was more pronounced? None of this is ok. I know because I’ve experienced all of this as an athlete. And now as a clinical nutritionist I see and truly understand how damaging this is. The future of our... sport, the future of your career and your future health depends on us acknowledging that this situation is not ok. This diet culture and body shaming in sport has to stop. It’s based on a ridiculously outdated notion that skinny=fast. Which is just as ludicrous and false as the belief that a size 2= the ultimate in beauty. There is so much evidence to revoke such insane ideals. But sometimes it can be hard to believe this. If you need help: please reach out. Send me a DM for support. And tag a training partner that needs to hear this #lssnutrition #bethechange See more

20.01.2022 Yesterday was world mental health day So we took the opportunity to make the most of our current situation. A morning walk in nature with the pup followed by a day in the garden. Both are incredibly nurturing for the mind. But we don’t need a specific day to focus on our own wellbeing (or at least we shouldn’t). Every day is a chance to take charge of your own health: both mental and physical. Double tap if this resonates with you, and let me know how you celebrated world mental health day below (if you missed the boat - do something today) #lssnutrition #healthiswealth

19.01.2022 Do you struggle with finding healthy snack options? The health food isle of most supermarkets has made it overly complicated to work out what is good for us. So I’ve put a list of healthy snack ideas on the blog of my website (link in bio) Pictured is about 200g of unsweetened yoghurt (the size of a small tub), topped with blueberries, seeds and 1/2tsp honey. The perfect post workout snack, or a great mid-arvo pick me up that won’t spike your blood sugar much. What’s your favourite nourishing snack? #lssnutrition #healthiswealth

18.01.2022 Save this post Lemon bliss balls recipe: 1 cup cashews 1 cup sunflower seeds 1 cup coconut flakes Zest & juice of 2 lemons... 1 Tbsp. coconut oil 2 Tbsp. honey Pinch of salt Method: place cashews, sunflower seeds and coconut in a food processor and blend until they form a powder (similar consistency to almond meal). Then add remaining ingredients and process until well combined and it becomes a dough-like texture. Scoop into small balls and place in a container. I put some in the fridge to eat in the next couple of days, and the rest in the freezer. The frozen balls defrost in about 10mins for future enjoyment Note, you can replace cashews for extra sunflower seeds to make a nut-free version for school lunches. Enjoy! #lssnutrition #healthiswealth

18.01.2022 Testing for food intolerances & allergies. Time to bust some myths There are so many different ways to test whether you have a food allergy or intolerance, but only some of these tests are actually accurate, or considered 'gold standard' methods. So before you waste considerable dollars on unnecessary tests, read this! For allergies: an IgE blood test can assess these VERY accurately. However you need to know what you are looking for, or at least have some idea. IgE allergi...es are usually extreme reactions to foods that often result in anaphylaxis. Most often, these types of reactions are identified when we are kids. IgG allergy testing is becoming more popular as a way to assess your reaction to hundreds of foods. These types of allergies are slower building and don't elicit the same level of allergy as an IgE type allergy. However: research shows these tests can be widely inaccurate, and often result in severe restriction of foods that are actually ok for us. They're also extremely expensive! In chronic IBS cases, preliminary research shows some improvement in eliminating those foods on an IgG test that come back as extreme reactions: but only temporarily. Another common test for allergies is a skin prick test. The accuracy for these is high for environmental allergens, but not so much for food allergens. Great to work out if you're allergic to your cat, but not so much for dairy! What about intolerances? Whilst some breath tests can provide accurate insights: such as lactose or fructose breath tests, the gold standard for assessing food intolerances is an elimination diet. And the best way to work out which elimination diet is appropriate, is to first do a food and symptom diary. This gives us vital clues as to what is most likely causing you issues (for now). Remember, any elimination diet is meant to be a temporary step in your healing journey: not a way of life. If you would like my FREE food and symptom diary template to assess your possible food triggers, shoot me your email in a D.M or pop it in the comments below #lssnutrition #healthiswealth See more

17.01.2022 Did you know that our immune systems actually thrive when we are exposed to bugs on a relatively regular basis? It's a phenomenon called 'priming', and it's believed to help reduce the likelihood of severe immune disruption, such as seen in autoimmune diseases. But right now we are in a unique situation, whereby everything is being sanitised to the highest standard . And this does appear to be the best method for reducing widespread infection of covid-19, but perhaps it's n...ot assisting our general immune function. Please continue to wash your hands and practice sensible hygiene. But there is a way we can continue to expose ourselves to 'bugs' in a healthy way. Step number 1: get outside! Even better if you can get into the garden or play in the dirt. There are so many insects and wildlife that reside in gardens and outdoors, that exposing ourselves to dirt can quite literally expose us to microbes more easily. It also has incredible mental health benefits, which in turn assists our immune and gut health. Step number 2: play with pets. Pets naturally carry a host of different bugs, and being around them helps support our own defences too. Again, they are great for mental health too. These are 2 simple things we can all do, on top of all the other public health advice right now, to support our system. Tag someone you needs to hear this. #lssnutrition #healthiswealth See more

12.01.2022 #QOTD. I discussed this concept in my talk at @poyntonsnursery on Sunday In nature there exists this beautiful pattern that needs to occur for anything to be created. We must first plant the seed. Then cultivate- nurture and nourish it. Until finally, we can harvest However in our quick fix, instant gratification society, we often forget the cultivation step. We think once we plant the seed, or take the first step, that almost instantly we can reap the rewards. But anyt...hing of value takes time to create or achieve. We MUST nurture and nourish ourselves along the journey. Those daily steps really do make all the difference in the world. This concept is discussed in greater detail in the book ‘The slight edge’ If you want personalised guidance in cultivating your sporting performance, shoot me a DM now, with the word CULTIVATE #lssnutrition #theslightedge

12.01.2022 Disappearing from the gram for a month wasn’t planned, but heck neither was a lot of this year, right?! Anyhoo, thought I better provide you all an update I’m in the process of creating a digital course for those with IBS who want to heal themselves (i.e instead of working 1:1 with a health practitioner). If this excites you, drop me your email below or via a DM and I’ll be sure to let you know the minute it launches. I can’t wait to bring this to you In other news, LSS... Nutrition has just surpassed its second birthday, so prices for my follow up consults will be going up end of month. Any existing appointments won’t be affected, so if you’re keen to save some cash, be sure to book your next appointment (or multiple) with me before next Thursday. The appointment itself doesn’t need to be before then, you just have to book yourself in the diary. And finally, I just wanted to send you all my love for your continued focus and determination in being the best version of you. Let me know if there’s anything specific you’d like to see more of here, or in service offerings. I’m here to help YOU #lssnutrition #healthiswealth See more

11.01.2022 Do I need to take a probiotic? This is perhaps the most common question I get outside the clinic rooms. The answer unfortunately, depends. But first, I want to break some myths around probiotics. There is no single probiotic that works for everyone. Each specific strain of bacteria & yeast plays a very different role in our body. So whenever I see advertising, or hear someone say that everybody should take X probiotic to fix IBS, I get really concerned. Even within the one ...health condition, such as IBS: there is a broad spectrum of imbalances and symptoms that can be presenting differently for each of us. For example, someone with constipation predominate IBS, is not going to need to the same treatment as someone with severe chronic diarrhoea. Or what if you swing between both ends of the spectrum? You guessed it: different treatment again. Probiotics have been shown to be beneficial in a number of health concerns, even outside the gut. For example, research shows improvements in anxiety and weight management with the right strain of probiotic. But again, it comes down to the specific strain and your individual situation. What about food sources of probiotics? Most people could benefit from adding some probiotic foods in their diet. However, if your gut is severely inflamed (such as those with gastritis), or those with conditions such as SIBO: it's possible any sort of probiotic is going to cause issues if consumed inappropriately. So what's the bottom line? Speak to a health practitioner about your individual concerns, and save yourself hours of research, and $$ wasted. #lssnutrition #healthiswealth See more

05.01.2022 Last night, a few hours after a friend spilt champagne all over my dress, another friend’s baby had a poo explosion on me. I burst into hysterical laughter, because it so perfectly summed up my year. In so many ways, 2020 has been an absolute shit show. But in between the mess, there have been some beautiful moments, some epic changes and even some highlights. I know for one, I am so incredibly grateful for all of you, who have entrusted me with your sporting goals, your heal...th and your struggles. It’s been amazing to help so many of you this year: either in clinic, in one of my seminars or webinars, or simply through something I said here. So thank you For now, I’m going to finish the year with some time away from social media. And I encourage all of you to switch off for a week or two as well. To be fully present in your day, and live not ‘for the gram’, but for your heart’s content. I can’t wait to be back: refreshed & rejuvenated, ready to tackle whatever 2021 has got, and to help more of you smash your goals Enjoy the festive season. Sending you all so much love, Lisa P.S I’ll be checking emails 1-2/week in case you need me #lssnutrition #healthiswealth

02.01.2022 I can’t help but draw comparisons of late between Melbournians and asylum seekers, or other minority groups. Before you dismiss the privileged white girl, hear me out. For the last three months (and more), those of us in Melbourne have been vilified, rejected and condemned. We are the part of the nation that Australia wishes so desperately didn’t exist right now. We have fought at times over resources, in fear of our own survival. We have been caged, muzzled and verbally abus...ed for the actions of a tiny minority among us. We want so desperately the freedom and rights that our neighbouring towns, states and nations hold. The freedom that so often parades in front us, whilst the caged doors remain closely guarded upon us. We’ve watched from a distance: loved ones passing on, whilst others give birth to new life. All the while, wishing we could be there, with them, in this moment. I write this not to point out my own heartache. But to highlight the parallels this short journey has with the constant struggle so many face in our ‘lucky country’. If you are a Melbournian who resonated with any of my sentiments: I urge you to join me in a mindset shift on how we view and judge those of us wanting the life we take for granted. Asylum seekers (and every other minority group), like us, are humans in need of connection, love, shelter and health. I pledge to use my privilege to support those less fortunate through giving back every fortnight via @buy1give1 And I’ll keep endeavouring to listen, without judgement. What will you do?

01.01.2022 After yesterday's post, I thought it would be fun to give you a few random facts about my clients (don't worry I won't spill your secrets) 1. Almost 40% of my clients are male (this is much higher than what most practitioners see). 2. The majority of my clients are health practitioners themselves, work in fitness/wellness/are athletes, trades people or are business owners. 3. About 90% of my clients want one (or more) of three things: more energy, better gut health, o...r to maximise their athletic performance. 4. About 95% of my clients are high achievers. The type of people who want to be amazing at everything they do. 5. The most commonly hated foods are offal and mushrooms Did any of these surprise you? If you're wondering whether I could be the right practitioner for you: book a complementary discovery call via my website, or send me a DM. See more
