24.01.2022 20 years ago, when I was a reasonably new teacher, my mentor, who is now my co-writer, told me that Reading Recovery was teaching students the reading strategies of poor readers. She had absolutely zero time for it, and proceeded to write her own material for students to read, so that they could practise the skills she was teaching them in class. Decodable reading books is now a big thing. How blessed do I feel to have met this wise, free thinking lady, and to be able to collaborate with her now? So blessed!

20.01.2022 I just heard "NAPLAN has not delivered what it promised." But, NAPLAN never had a chance of delivering anything, as it is simply a 'snapshot' summative assessment tool. Were outcomes for students expected to rise because they sit standardised literacy and numeracy tests every two years? It is unquestionable that passionate, highly skilled teachers are the key to 'delivering' excellent outcomes for students. Why don't we start investing in them?

16.01.2022 To all the amazing teachers who have completed another year in this draining, yet inspirational vocation - we salute you! May the festive season be filled with love, joy and peace as you rejuvenate and prepare for the adventure of 2020.

11.01.2022 To be (explicit), or not to be(explicit)? That is the question! Regarding instruction in reading and writing - here are my thoughts... The English written code consists of letters. It is important that students understand that letters are not sounds. We must refer to letters by their names. This is important because we have 42-44 speech sounds but over 200 ways of representing these sounds (orthography). This means that our 26 letters need to be combined in different ways in ...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Why is Rhyme Important? Why bother with nursery rhymes? They are so out-of-date! The LTR Language & Literacy Program uses many of the traditional English rhymes because they are part of our great English language heritage and too much fun to be forgotten.... Children enjoy the rhythm of the English language and the rhyming of words. They quickly learn to manipulate words and build confidence and enjoyment in oral language skills. When hearing rhyme, listening and thinking skills are sharpened and the skills of identifying and analysing the sounds in words are enhanced. Vocabulary is extended as children hear words they do not know and have them explained. Read more... https://www.ltrlearning.com/2018/12/why-is-rhyme-important/

06.01.2022 Yesterday, my very honest husband said, "the problem with LTR is you haven't created ('insert any literacy program here') 2.0.... you are trying to change the world!" I was a little disheartened as I pondered that for a while. And then I watched an interview with Brene Brown on Youtube. Her exact words, in response to a dream she has was "it's an audacious goal, but achievable." Why not dream big? So, here's to all the dreamers out there. You can check out the LTR dream here... https://www.ltrlearning.com/about-the-program/our-dream/
