22.01.2022 Reposting this from my Instagram to reiterate the importance of thoracic extension in shoulder health as it has been a regular occurrence in my clinic over the past 5 weeks! 3 failed rehab attempts of a dislocated shoulder for @jacksonb747 leading to shoulder impingement which was exacerbated with overhead movements. 3 different therapists, all with the same approach prescribing only rotator cuff drills, and ignoring the importance of flexibility and thoracic positioning in s...houlder health. We took a different approach, finding a large limitation in thoracic extension. Using a spinal wedge to improve his extension range an immediate reduction of pain was noted. This was an important find as it showed the true cause of the issue was not the shoulder itself. Combine that with regular soft tissue work and stretching of the shoulder internal rotators, corrective exercise to reinforce thoracic extension and proper scapula movement, @jacksonb747 was back in to full contact training and is now 3-0 in his boxing taking out 3 easy wins. The thoracic is often over looked in shoulder injuries, but plays such a pivotal role to the shoulders health due to its effect on scapula movement. A good understanding of biomechanics is imperative to injury prevention and rehabilitation, as in this case, dysfunction in one area lead to injury in another. See more

22.01.2022 A good read explaining the importance of posture and proper technique with training. The body will adapt to what it does most often. So if you sit down all day, or you consistently use poor form in training, you will adapt to these positions, further increasing risk of injury.

21.01.2022 Due to the unfortunate events of the coronavirus, LSPT will be additionally going mobile for your Physical Therapy needs! This will effect appointment times due to travel so please bare with us in these uncertain times. Thank you DM or contact me on 0401 615 335 to make a booking.

19.01.2022 The best thing I’ve done in my training lately has been the introduction of sessions allocated to flexibility. Years of poor training decisions combined with multiple surgeries left me with many issues such as lower back pain and persistent knee pain. I can’t stress enough how important flexibility is! Unfortunately the belief that stretching makes you weak, or that stretching for longer than 90 sec holds won’t give you a better results still seems to be the common belief among most people today, so it’s no wonder so many of us are getting injured and staying injured....... Do yourself a favor and stretch!

17.01.2022 Amazing news hearing Kaitlin is finally back training pain free after a couple sessions!

17.01.2022 First week - Painful, hesitant movement with significant loss of over head movement in the shoulder, with pain and weakness of resisted movement. Third week - Pain free, fluent movement over head to 180 degrees, with dramatic increase in strength. Getting results early has a strong impact on a clients will to take part in the rehab program. After showing Mark S Webb how quickly soft tissue work, stretching, and simple control drills can have an impact on even chronic injuries, he has been working daily on his rehab, and prioritizing our sessions together. Love your commitment mate, even better things to come!

14.01.2022 Great work Mitchell Carr who’s made awesome progress with his left shoulder over the past 4 weeks. Truly shows what commitment to rehabilitation and regular soft tissue work can do for you

13.01.2022 Client Progress: Clint initially came in with elbow pain during basketball shooting and we were quick to find he had quite a noticeable scapular instability with visual winging, placing unnecessary load on his elbow. With a series of scapular stability training, soft tissue work, and alterations in his current training program, Clint has seen a large increase in his scapular stability, a large decrease in his scapular winging as seen in the photos, and is back playing basketball with his elbow pain free.

11.01.2022 Lateral Knee Pain Case: A client presented with lateral knee pain in a flexed position, particularly in foot strike during running. After a postural assessment showed an increased Q angle of the affected knee, we moved on to functional and strength testing which showed weakness of the abductors of the hip, effectively leading to collapsing of the knee. Reduction of tension in the adductors showed a notable decrease in pain, and strength of the abductors increased, proving an element of reciprocal inhibition was at play. Activation drills to recruit the hip abductors (Gluteus Medius and Maximus) enabled the client to more effectively recruit them during functional testing which resulted in a significant decrease in pain. Maintaining balance is essential to muscle and joint health. Don’t ignore the messages your body is sending you!

10.01.2022 How muscle imbalances affect the shoulder: Muscle tension can be described as the the condition in which a muscle stays partially contracted. Reciprocal inhibition is the process by which opposing muscles relax in order to accomodate the contraction of the muscles on the other side of the joint. When looking at the shoulder complex, the lats are the opposing muscles of the deltoid as they bring the arm down from an abducted (raised) position, but more specifically, they oppos...e the supraspinatus, a key muscle involved in shoulder stability as it works as a rotator cuff muscle to maintain the head of the humerus (upper arm bone) inside the glenoid (socket of the shoulder). Tension in the lats is extremely common, especially among those who partake in resistance training, and this rise in tension can lead to inhibition of the supraspinatus. The result of this inhibition leads to a reduction in the subacromial space (between the head of the humerus and acromion of the scapula) of up to 50% as the supraspinatus muscle is not working effectively to compress the humeral head inside the glenoid, therefore leading to upward translation of the humeral head reducing this space. This impinges the tissues in this space such as the subacromial bursa, the tendon of the supraspinatus, and the tendon of the long head of the biceps leading to conditions such as subacromial bursitis, and tendinopathy of these tendons. But not only that, due to the increased instability, the shoulder complex is now more prone to dislocation and other joint related injuries. Suffice to say, regaining length and tension balance of the shoulder complex is of the utmost importance when it comes to shoulder rehabilitation.

06.01.2022 https://erikdalton.com/blog/forward-head-posture/ 'The effects of poor posture go far beyond just looking awkward'. Do not underestimate the ramifications of poor posture. Neck pain, shoulder pain, tension headaches, even balance and gait issues are among a great deal of issues caused by forward head posture. As the head moves forward, there is a decrease in the natural curve of the neck and an increased load is placed upon the cervical discs. This can amount to 10 pounds (4....5kgs) for every inch forward that needs to be supported. This accelerates degeneration of cervical discs, intervertebral & facet joints, increasing risk of impingement of the nerves in the neck, thus leading to pain and weakness of the upper limbs and more! 05.01.2022 Lucas Sexton Sports Massage is NOW OPEN! Pricing for 1hr bookings (HEALTH FUND REBATABLE): $55 for first session $70 for follow up sessions... As a Sports & Remedial Massage Therapist I offer health fund rebates and a wide range of modalities to help with many types of physical ailments including: - Myofascial Release - Trigger Point Therapy - Myofascial Cupping - Dry Needling - Corrective Exercise Prescription As someone who has dealt with MANY injuries over the years, i've found the most important part of rehabilitation is identifying the cause as soon as possible. Treating the symptoms will only act as a band aid solution for a limited time before bigger problems become apparent. As always though, injury prevention should play the biggest role in your training because after all, you can't improve whilst injured!
