04.01.2022 The John Stokes Square housing complex in Nightcliff is under redevelopment. Nightcliff resident Dianne Koser has been diligently chasing the government to comm...it to solar for the redevelopment - to little avail. She sent us this: I am an optimist and believe that as we live in a democracy we have a duty to participate in the democratic process. I have lived in the Nightcliff area for many decades and have been providing feedback since April 2019 on the John Stokes Square redevelopment. I believe my feedback has been honest and well informed and that it would be taken seriously. Although the buildings, including the police station and residential buildings are perfectly situated to be fully covered with solar panels, having absolutely no shading from either other buildings or trees, the only solar to be provided is for hot water. This comment is from a member of True North consultants: ‘Only solar hot water provision will be in place at this stage. This means the buildings will be solar ready for the future. However both the Residential Units and Police Station are currently only at 30% design.’ -- 30 January, 2020 All of this is in spite of the following: The residents are all low income and power from renewables is now the cheapest option. All apartments will be fitted with air conditioners which will be needed because of the increasingly high temperatures caused by climate change and the likelihood that there will be no cross ventilation. Installation of solar panels would be a clear message to the community of the Government’s commitment to 50% renewables in 10 years. At this time of uncertainty, many local solar companies must be willing and ready to do this work. All the buildings are perfectly situated to be fully covered with solar panels, being absolutely shade free. The government’s recent announcement that it will provide a large battery for storage. When I asked for the reason, I was told it was not included in the Budget. How can we take the government’s commitment to 50% Renewables by 2030 seriously? and why ask for feedback that is then ignored? Worse still, the inclusion of old technology (electricity from gas) in new buildings seems totally irrational.
