23.01.2022 More on the PLB/EPIRB problem with metal detectors. After much research by our APLA member, Greg Eller here's what we've found out so far. Put simply, metal detectors and PLB/EPIRBs don't get on when placed close to each other. APLA thanks Greg for the time and effort he's put into this. We've distributed the data to Minelab in Adelaide and Minelab dealers in WA and the USA. It reads as follows:

22.01.2022 A good customer recently sent us through some pictures of what he believes to be an old Chinese opium pipe. He was detecting in the Victorian Golden Triangle wi...th his Minelab GPX 4500 about 50m away from some major old diggings. At first he thought it may have been a useless old door handle, but after conducting some research he found that it looked identical to a bronze or copper end piece of old wooden/bamboo stem pipes used by the Chinese around the gold rush era. If anyone has any more information or clarification on this find, feel free to send it in to us! He told us that it must have brought him luck, as he then went on to find a 1.5 gram & a 4.17 gram gold nugget shortly afterwards.

18.01.2022 "My friends took me to a spot in Central New South Wales and we were panning and getting alluvial gold - just a few tiny little pickers. This was the first time I had ever been panning and I was bitten by the bug that day so all I want to do now is to go panning. I'm on a disability pension so I can go anytime I like, but because I'm on a pension for my back and knees I quickly realised that bending over, digging and kneeling down was no good for me. I thought about using a ...hand dredge. I already had a yabby pump but because I'm 6-ft plus there was no way a yabby pump was going to be good for me either. I decided to build my own hand dredge out of PVC pipe and go out with it, along with a 10L bucket. I also made some smaller attachments for it to get right into the crevices. The first bucket I took was from a crevice. Firstly, I did a test pan which yielded up a little bit of alluvial gold so I decided to clean the crevice out. It ended up being a whole 10 litre bucket full of gravel, and I was only using the standard Garrett classifier, so it let the big gravel through. When the first pan got pretty low I could hear some heavy scraping in the bottom of the pan. I knew straight away that this wasn't just any old rock. You could tell it was heavy for its size and then all of a sudden, low and behold, I found my first nugget - a beautiful 3 grammer! Well, I had a smile on my face like a Cheshire Cat. I couldn't believe it, and I couldn't get that smile off my face for ages. To this day, I still can't stop smiling whenever I think about it."

14.01.2022 Find of the day! A good customer of ours popped into the shop today to show us this HOLLOWAYS FAMILY OINTMENT pot which he found at decent depth below the ground. They were a popular brand in the mid 1800s and the pots held a quack treatment for the cure of gout and rheumatism, inveterate ulcers, sore breasts, sore head, bad legs, etc. Fun fact! Thomas Holloway, the developer, tried to convince Charles Dickens to include the medicine in his books, but he refused.

13.01.2022 Tonight live at 7pm daylight savings time tune in to hear Darren speak about gold prospecting tips and tips, some great stories and intriguing relics.

13.01.2022 We’ve seen some amazing nuggets in our time but this one has to be right up there with the best of them! Crystalline native gold from the Eagle’s Nest mine in Placer County, California. Photo Credit: Tom Spann, Mineral Masterpiece.

12.01.2022 We recently ran an article outlining the risks of being complacent in the battle for public land use here in Victoria. This resonated with our QLD readers who urged us to highlight what has happened in QLD regarding the bush law reform as a cautionary tale for us Victorians. Nigel was used to prospecting in VIC (where he lived 9 years beforehand) with accessible prospecting in the bush pretty much anywhere he went - detecting, panning, sluicing, and highbanking. In QLD there... are now only a handful of accessible designated prospecting areas known as GPAs - General Permission Areas. A large majority of State Forest in QLD is accessible for other forms of recreation like 4wding, mountain bike riding, hiking etc, but strictly not for prospecting. There is also a yearly fee of $60 for a QLD Miner's Right, which is a far cry from $25.20 per decade here in VIC. He urges Victorians to keep doing the right thing in the bush - i.e. filling holes and taking out rubbish, joining associations to show numbers, and getting a voice out there. Pictured above is some gorgeous QLD gold that Nigel has found over the years. He mentioned that he was lucky to have access to one cattle station where he has prospected over 600 grams of nuggets. How amazing! Be sure to join the Prospectors & Miners Association of Victoria (PMAV) so you can make your voice heard for all prospectors.

11.01.2022 WA is still turning up big, fat nuggets! This 10oz nugget was recently found in the Goldfields region. On today's gold price the find would be worth aroun...d $26,600. It's believed more than double the amount of gold mined in Victoria in the past 170 years is yet to be discovered, and plenty lies beneath Ballarat... ...maybe there's a Ballarat nugget still out there? - The Prospectors Patch

08.01.2022 Recently we took a lovely lady and her partner on a Gold & Relics gold prospecting tour in Creswick, VIC. These particular goldfields held significance for her,... as she owned a beautiful little specimen (pictured) that she inherited from her mother, who had found it years ago with her own sister and father in the very same goldfields. Her mother's passion for prospecting is what motivated her to join us on tour. With our guidance, hopefully she can find another gold nugget of her own to pass down the generations! https://goldandrelics.com.au/

04.01.2022 This was found by a friend many years ago in the Central Goldfields of Victoria. It was found in an old wash heap. It is inscribed with the initials RS and it would have been owned by somebody of significance. It weighs just over 14 grams and was tested at 22 carat so it was probably made on the goldfields out of a natural gold nugget. My mate sold it to me when he had a massive water bill to pay over the Summer drought a few years back and I promised him I would never sell it.

03.01.2022 It’s show off time! Show us your first, favourite or the biggest nugget that you’ve found! These two beautiful looking nuggets below are currently for sale in our store along with many others.
