22.01.2022 The best way to Measure Business Success - and the dirty little industry secret designed to make it hard for you to do it yourself .... Most businesses know how they do in sales, or profit from one year to the next, but these generic measures hide true results. A business I work with made $2M in sales last year and $2.8M the year before. So were they successful?... Despite lower sales they made 20% net profit last year but only 14% the year before. Now are they successful? In fact sales are down due to a change in the business strategy. Since then: - Staff are more engaged - Customers are happier - The business has gone from stagnant to high-growth (whilst increasing profit). So what should you measure? There are many approaches you can use to measure your business success. 22.01.2022 Money - it's a difficult conversation to have more most people. In fact one of the things that drew me to my Finance career was that an old boss of mine said your have to build trust in this business. People will tell you the disease they have, who they had a one night stand with, before they truthfully tell you how much money they have.... 02.01.2022 30% more profit in 90 days... Sounds too good to be true.... What it it was 180 days would that be more like it?... We'll that's not true either. Sure on average or customers get 30% in 90 days. Some get more, some take a little longer. No 2 businesses are the same. Only you can decide how much you're willing get and how long you'll take. Funnily enough when I did this work for big corporates they would never believe it can be done so quickly. If it could they would have already done it.... So we would tell them 30% in 12 months. Back then we would set up a project, form a committee, define roles and responsibilities, go for lots of coffee chats, and do loads of powerpoint presentations. Six months in we would actually start implementation and get the results in 9 months (90 days later). It's up to you how you want to implement, fast or slow, complicated or simple.
