16.01.2022 The FIFA 11+ is perhaps the most well known and well researched injury prevention program, and consistent implementation has been shown to reduce lower limb inj...uries in community level athletes by up to 50%. It is a soccer specific pogram, but it's principles can be extrapolated to any field sport. It involves a specific warm up and strength training. Recent research shows better compliance and equally effective results when the strength component is done after training, as opposed to pre-training as originally designed. This is likely due to this being more practical, and therefore aiding in compliance with the strength exercises. #footballphysio #injuryprevention #worksmarterandharder #performbetter

15.01.2022 We deal with stress fractures on a regular basis. . Some, like most metatarsal stressies are usually very straightforward to manage. . Others, like anterior tib...ial cortical fracture, base of 5th MT and the dreaded navicular stress fracture are very difficult to treat. . Why? . Because these fractures are a failure of bone in tension, and so do not have the same opportunity to heal as those failing on the compression side of bone, for example a posterior medial tibial stress fracture or simple metatarsal stress fracture. . When the foot strikes the ground, the bone bends, usually in a concave direction. . This is offset by the action of muscles, for example on the tibia, the action of triceps surae, which help to prevent excessive bone bending. . THIS IS WHY MAINTAINING LEAN MUSCLE MASS IS SO IMPORTANT, especially for shin pain. . If the calf muscles are very weak for example, the bone is allowed to bend in a concave manner, this placing the anterior tibial cortex under tension. . If this is allowed to progress, fracture can occur with the appearance of the "dreaded black line". . This graphic explains the treatment concepts algorithm perfectly. . It is from an excellent paper by Frank McCormick, Stress Fractures in Runners, Clinics in Sports Medicine, VOLUME 31, ISSUE 2, P291-306, APRIL 01, 2012 . #fracture #stressfracture #injury #sportsinjury #shin #shinpain See more

14.01.2022 Disc protrusion completely resolves on its own! Here's a case report of a 28 year old with severe back and leg pain MRI November 2018 showed Large L4/5...disc protrusion w severe cord narrowing/ crowding of cauda equina rootlets.... 7 months later and a new round of imaging MRI May 2019 showed reabsorption and now pain free! This is a great example of conservative Mx & ‘watch & wait’ approach. We don't know exactly what his treatment consisted of, but we know from the research that disc problems resolve on their own A meta-analysis (Zhong et al 2017) has shown that 2/3 of disc bulges spontaneously heal on their own! Many of them within a few months too, not years See a summary of this paper here https://www.physio-network.com//two-thirds-of-herniated-d/ This does not mean that no one should ever undergo surgery. Each patient must be managed on an individual basis Thanks to Dan Board for bringing this case to our attention.

01.01.2022 Nutrition is very important. So its good to know as therapists how we can advise our patients with some basic knowledge + knowing where out limits are and when ...we have to refer to a nutritionist. Do you agree? . Great post by @physiutrition : " Look beyond JUST Calcium + Vitamin D Unfortunately fractures happen, they’re cr*p but once it’s happened - let’s work with our body by giving it EVERYTHING it needs to repair things. Nutrition is key in building strong bones and reducing risk of fracture - if you’re recovering from a break then even more important! These micronutrients should be included in sufficient amounts for you each day to optimise your recovery! Any questions specific to you, send me a message! #physiutrition" See more
