21.01.2022 OLIVE OIL & WHY IT'S BETTER THAN THE REST In terms of research into health benefits, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is hands down the winning oil. It's loaded ...with beneficial plant chemicals (polyphenols & other phytochemicals) & several trials support the wide ranging health benefits - including your heart brain & gut health. Despite the myths, research shows high-quality EVOO was more stable in home cooking (around 180C) than other oils including sunflower, canola & coconut oil That's thanks to its high-antioxidant levels, which protects the fat from breaking down. One trial even found that when people cook tomatoes with olive oil, it results in more lycopene (another beneficial plant chemical) in their blood. Why? The olive oil is thought to help our body better absorb the lycopene - which is linked to improving your skin's defence against the sun better heart health & lower risk of prostate cancer. I use it in all my cooking (or just dipping in a loaf of fresh sourdough can't beat it!) & that's another reason why you'll find EVOO in my Bio&Me granolas. Recently there has been quite a lot of controversy around EVOO with several companies called out for selling fake EVOO. So how can you tell if it's the real thing? Please promise me something- do NOT think you need ...to 'punish' yourself now because you enjoyed your Christmas! Spending the week with my hubby's family in Ireland I've sure had my fill of But that absolutely doesn't mean I'm now going to try overcompensate by being restrictive. No cleanses, juice diets or cutting out whole food groups here These 'detoxes' trying to take advantage of your New Year's resolutions to get healthy might be promising to remove toxins, make you lose weight and miraculously fix all your ailments , but in fact many detox supplements, cleanses and teatoxes can often do more harm than good. Those that contain laxatives might make you and feel lighter, but in the long-term can put you at risk of dehydration, nutritional deficiencies and even make you dependent on them to in future. The bottom line: there is no scientific evidence to support any 'detox' diet. Your kidney and your liver - the main detoxing organs - do just fine with your body's detoxification without expensive juice diets or dodgy colon cleanses. Instead, if you want to feel a little healthier and happier, eat and enjoy REAL FOOD full of flavour, fibre and all those beneficial plant chemicals our gut microbes love so much!

06.01.2022 Regardless of the recipe used (US vs UK vs AUS) the end product is still the same: a combination of highly processed carbs, unhealthy fats and salt that causes inflammation in our bodies and ultimately leads to chronic disease. The biggest problem here?? We don’t experience the implications of chronic disease until later on in life - we are naive to the consequences of these ultra-processed products convenience outlets label as food. Take it from someone who counsels people suffering from chronic disease everyday, these foods rob you of your quality of life at a time in your life that you’ve been waiting so long to enjoy.

05.01.2022 My parents didnt know any better. They just bought the food that they saw in the market: the cereals, the cookies, the canned foods. And I didnt know any b...etter either. I was just a kid. I ate the food that I saw in my house. There were words on the label that I didnt understand: added this, added that, chemicals to make it last longer, chemicals to make it cheaper, chemicals to make it thicker, chemicals to hold everything together. But I didnt question any of it. Because they used kids in the advertisements. I always saw other kids eating the food and promoting it. The government wasnt helping. With their pyramids and their charts that everyone follows. It all seemed OK. But it was all junk and sugar. Now my mom and dad and brother have diabetes. I have fibroids and stuff like that. Recently they took out my thyroid because it was showing signs of cancer. Im starting to think that its all linked. They sell us poison so they can sell us pills. Im trying to eat better now. Im trying to learn. But the more I learn, the less I know where to go. I know that everything in the aisles is killer. But even the fruits and vegetables have chemicals. If I wanted to be completely sure, Id have to have my own farm. Its just not possible. (Montreal, Canada)

Wha...t are they? - Our low fiber, high sugar, processed food, nutrient poor, high calorie diet that makes all the wrong bacteria and yeast grow in the gut leading to a damaged ecosystem. - Overuse of medications that damage the gut or block normal digestive function things like anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, acid blocking drugs, steroids. - Chronic low-grade infections or gut imbalances with overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine, or yeast overgrowth or parasites, or even more serious gut infections. - Toxins damage the gut such as mercury and mold toxins. - Lack of adequate digestive enzyme function which can come from acid blocking medication use, or zinc deficiency. - Stress can alter the gut nervous system causing a leaky gut and change the normal bacteria in the gut.

Within the Mansfield Shire: 11% of boys and 12%... of girls are meeting vegetable consumption guidelines every day (Deakin University, 2019). Similarly, 8% of Mansfield adults are meeting the vegetable consumption guidelines (Victorian Population Health Survey, 2017). The Mansfield Respond project team are working on some really exciting projects that are specifically targeted at increasing vegetable consumption at a local level.
